In South Africa we get 3 weeks paid leave per annum. It is law.
I admit I didnโt get through the whole video as Iโm away, but seen similar ones before.
Hourly employees have it rough. It is generally considered you are paid for each hour you work, so on vacation means youโre working
For most jobs and salaried. There is a dual trend going here. Most companies pay out vacation based on how long you work there. First year you might get 2 weeks. After that they add days so you get more. So if you are there for a long time you get a good amount of vacation. My wife had been at the same job for 14 years, and is up to 28 days vacation, plus a floating holiday. Next year she gets 5 more days and will have 33 vacation days.
Thing is, the American worker has put money over time off over the past couple of decades. You can raise your salaries faster by job hopping, working at a place for a year or two then taking a better paying job in another company. However, this resets the benefits. Not just for vacation either. 401k/pension benefits all reset, as well as others. As much as people say they want the benefits, they want the money more.
So itโs not just a company thing, the American worker has made this change just as much.
In sweden you have 5 weeks vaccation and its your right to have minimum 4 weeks in a row and of course its paid
If you want to establish the European Systems to the US the Republicans will call you a Communist and put you into Jail. I really don't know why nearly all the exploited americans are so proud of such a horrible country.
My European mind sees the US work laws as literal modern slavery ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
And when I hear that 48% donโt use all the vacations they get blows my mind ! Lol
We don't just get paid vacation. In the Netherlands (idk about the other countries so everybody chime in) we get 8% of our yearly salary as 'vakantiegeld' (vacation money) on top of our regular salary by the end of May. So this month I'll be getting a big chunk of extra salary I can spend on vacation this summer. This is a standard benefit and when you negotiate your salary, this isn't calculated in your salary it's an actual benefit. My SO gets a 13th month, which is usually given by the end of November as extra spending money around the December month. I don't get the 13th month but I get a bonus instead, last year it was several thousand so it was roughly the same as my SO. These are all extra's and actual benefits.
No,from my French language ( my point of view is not the point of view of everything and everybody around me. (You noticed that my first word was in majuscule). I know french people are known to be loud(as us or something) . Here is European drapeau ๐ช๐บ !
3 weeks of in a row is not normal? that's what I do almost every year! ever since I started to work even ^^ and I've still two other weeks off a year, and like 10 holidays? There isn't even a concept of "unpaid days off" here! what is this abomination of a thing! If you work somewhere, you are getting paid. That's the craziest thing for me "paid time off"… EVERYTIME I HAVE TIME OFF IS PAID! Don't you get the same amount of money every month? Also, just asking, do you even have a 13th and 14th salary?
Having a big turnaround in employees involves lost production time due to the new intake requiring time to settle into the new work routine and environment, gain experience in the new tasks and because of a lack of loyalty so never working at 100%. Also, being overworked both physically, mentally and by time, turns the workforce into mechanical zombies who at best work at a much reduced output
My country has 20 days + some Christian holidays, also for non Christian people these are free days. And many jobs offer more days, 20 is the minimum, lots give 25 days a year
Here in Italy , it differs from job to job if you can "transfer" your vacation days into the next year. In most places (mine, for instance) you HAVE to use them all up. In some other places they pay you the days you did not use. And "sick time" is unheard of. You cannot foresee if you will be sick, when or how long, so sick time is… when you're sick. The doctor certifies that you are, and the certificate goes to your employer and to the statal institution that pays for sick days ( you have to be at home at certain times of the day, in case a doctor comes home for a control). So there is no "defined" maximum amount of sick days.
P.S. maybe more americans would like to learn more about different countries or regions, if they could just visit them on vacation… am I wrong?
French national here, I'm about to take my 3 weeks vacation at the end of June, early August. It's just comforting to know that your company has your back and you can go out and relax without having to have a single thought about "work". I worked for an American company 20 years ago. Never again.
I could not take more than 10 days off at a time and they were calling me while I was on my break.
As we always hear in the USA is freedom. while other Countries only laugh at them for we have more freedom then they do.
In Tรผrkiye, if the employer does not use his 30-day annual leave, he has to pay 1 month's salary more as a penalty.
there is however an error in the graph, in Italy by law from the first year there are a minimum of 26.7 days of paid holidays plus another 13 days of national holidays which are always paid so you get to 40 days, if you then work in the same company they increase every period, I have worked for 25 years in the same company by law I had 37 days.
but if you get sick in those days you can fully recover your holidays
Take another look at those graphs, America is different everyone else has slight variations.
Here in Australia, depending upon your industry, you can get upto 10 weeks of leave per year. I get 9.5 weeks, that's 5 weeks Annual leave, (vacation) 2.5 weeks RDO, (rostered days off) plus 2 weeks sick leave which also can be used for a family member being sick and I need to stay home to look after them. Plus, after 7 years of working with the same company I get 6 weeks long service leave, plus an extra week for every year after that. Most I think don't use long service leave and when you leave the company they have to pay you out all of your accumulated leave except sick leave.
I honestly think, American companies don't want you to take a vacation and go abroad. Because if you do, you can see how things work around the world and how many things around the jobs (and workers rights) are actually posssible and again, it workks well. After you've seen these things, you could possibly demand them in the US and that's what they don't want you to do. Greetings from Czechia.
BTW: We actually have to take all our vacation days. If not, the employer is gonna be fined for exploiting workers.
in Victoria Australia we have the day before the AFL Grand Final as a paid day off
As a shift worker in Australia I received 5 weeks vacation plus I also received 18 days sick leave. Every 10 years we receive 3 months leave classed as long service leave. We also receive redundancy payment if the company wants you to leave. Because of Covid I applied for and received a redundancy payment of 102 weeks pay tax free after 28 years service. Happily retired at 62. ๐
south africa you have 21 days a year and 5 family responsibility and 3 month meturnity for moms 10 siek leave every year
What are you waiting for? People like you will always be welcomed in Europe. What about starting tomorrrow?
I feel like Americans are also brainwashed by TV. Most American shows or sitcoms have an episode where someone is sick or is due holiday and refuses to take it.
In America the more you work the more money the boss gets, that is why you get bshamed for taking vacations, it will upset the boss.
US citizens don't have time to travel. If US citizens traveled abroad, they might come back with new ideas for society and a desire to change things in the US. I'm afraid your politicians and companies don't want that. The USA is not a role model for Germany. Germany is a role model for the USA.
And the chart at the beginning is just the MANDATED number by law. The reality is usually even more. For example, it is quite normal to have 30+ paid vacation days in Germany, even though only 20 are mandated. If you "only" get 20-25, you better get a lot of money, or you have a bad job and should switch.
Also in Germany your boss is NOT allowed to contact you during your vacation time, unless you get benefits (monetary, timewise or otherwise) or the company is at risk.
You see American comic George Carlin and listen dom american and live vorse to loose
He explained you everything
Maybe it's because i'm down some sort of rabbit hole, but holy shi*t the USA seems the most terrible place to be in the developped world. every video i watch on americans reacting to something is mind blowing, basic human rights don't seem to exist yet half the country pray's to the second amendment (no, i am not saying thats you). I just feel really sorry for the people living there. Not that EU has the answer to everyting, but the basics are very much taken care of and no thats not 'socialist'. I honestly fear for the future of the USA, you can't maintain a society likt this. on a more positive note: love your videos ๐
edit exactly what you say: americans don't look beyond it's borders so think that everything they do is normal and they are the greatest and most free country on earh (LOL). Please US citizens, look what at what is possible in the rest of the developped world!
It's none the government's business how much vacation time you get. That's up to the company you work for and is a perk. And they are not horrible.I get three weeks a year and can roll it over to the next year and have six.Yep really horrible!
Capitalism baby !!
The rich get richer on the backs of the slave trade you call employment.
the wages are disgusting.
the profits have zero regard for the workers.
G'day Ian mate, right now I've got 8 weeks of Holls up my sleeve, came next year I'll have 12 weeks Holl's and I will be taking about 5 weeks off from work. P/s only 6 and a bit years to go when I retire from doing ๐๐๐ collecting, my poor Bloody leg's can have a rest ha,ha, ha, ๐๐ฆ๐บ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ
Companies here insist on staff taking their vacation time, it shows as a debt in the books and they don't want an unnecessarily large debt figure. Also it is part of the internal controls, a person not taking leave may be afraid to take leave in case it is discovered that they have been defrauding the company.
In this video, vacation time is expressed in days of paid leave, not in weeks (where it seems to be the most common US time off unit). That means that when you have 30 days of paid leave per year in France it isn't four weeks (4×7=28 (+2) days) but five weeks ((6 "jours ouvrรฉs" (business days)+sunday)x5).
I'm Norwegian. Back in the day here companies were allowed to literally buy your vacation time, i.e. compensate you if you gave up your vacation. I've done that many times. Even felt pressured into doing so. Even in one of the most social democratic countries on the planet, if you work for a large multinational corporation they find workarounds ๐
As a manager I have to keep a eye on people's holidays to ensure they take time off and even encourage them to take time off if they haven't used any holiday days
5:00 I imagine its not paid vacation thats why they dont take it. I mean why take non-paid vacation? just quit your job when you want free time right?
As I watch this, its my first day of 4 week paid vacation. And there is 15 paid dutyfree days. And I am loving it.
Hello, 30 days in France are actually 5 weeks. Because when you want to take a week off, you have to use vacation days from Monday to Saturday. In other way you have to spend 6 days out of your 30 to get a Week off. It is 5 weeks of paid vacations, i mean is fantastic, but not 6 weeks has the 30 days may suggest.
I was thinking about something.
France is one of the countries that developped paid vacations the earliest (1936) and upgraded the lenght of said paid vacation the earliest.
In the most visited countries of the world, France is first with 80 millions visitors.
The US come 5th (on a 2019 analysis.)
Even Japan is 4th!
Do you imagine if the US had a real, organized policy of tourism, both internally and externally?
Yes, externally. As a Frenchman, I can remember seeing TV travel adverts for Spain, Iceland, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Mexico, and even Cuba, Croatia and Poland!!! But I never saw any advert for US tourism. The closest I can recall are ads from plane companies offering discount plane tickets to the USA (before COVID).
OFC I'm not saying that the USA doesn't have a tourism industry – there's the whole city of Las Vegas about that, right? ๐ – But I feel like it's not properly advertized abroad.
In Austria we have 5 weeks of paid vacation (sometimes 6 weeks) and in my mind it should be much more! We donโt live for work, we only work for life (if you have a healthy brain!)!!!
That's one aspect I never understood about the US, I couldn't do it, I already get lots of time off (4 weeks of vacation plus every other Friday off due to a flexible schedule, besides all the official holidays) and I still feel stressed at times and look forward to some time off to recuperate. The company I work for has a mandatory 10 days off of vacation minimum that must be taken during the year. Our personal profile page even tracks how long it's been since your last vacation and after a certain number of days it'll start showing you the link to the vacation request page saying you should consider taking a break because it's been a while since your last time off. Even our bosses make sure to keep reminding us that taking vacation is good for our mental health and that it's there to be used so I say it definitely makes a difference in productivity, nothing like a well rested employee to get newly motivated to keep being productive rather than feeling burnt out.
What I would love to see, is the figures of Burn-outs … Guess you don't have those because they would betray the capitalist system. I'm 63, I'm from BE. If I were to be able to take all of my surplus hours I spent in my 43-years carreer, I would have been a pensioner several years ago. As it is right now, I have to work till I'm 67 to get a full carreer and a decent pension. However, I have been able to visit India/Nepal saving up my 20 guaranteed days and complement them with some unpaid days off. No problem. In the US, this would get you kicked out … I had the opportunity to go work in the US (I didn't because a better offer showed up) but to be honest, I'm glad I didn't.
Anyway, now I can step into a system called End-of-carreer … I can choose to work either 1/2 or 4/5 (40 or 38 hour week) which, gives me the opportunity to work 4/5 and have the 1/5 compensated by the taxes I paid during my working carreer. Guees what I'll be doing.
Honestly, simply the thought that over-70s still need to get an underpaid restaurant job washing dishes to be able to simply eat, disgusts me. Work ethics? My *ss …
Dude that sucks I get 6 weeks paid vacation every year cheers from Canada ๐จ๐ฆ
