Îles de Salut is a trio of small islands off the coast of French Guiana.
Until the 1950s, it was uses as a prison for French convicts.
Many died from labor, disease, infighting, and sharks.
One of the greatest books ever written, titled ‘Papillon’ details the decades that one unlucky prisoner spent on these three tiny islands.
We spent a day on the islands checking out this prison in paradise.
If you go, it’s probably worth camping on the islands – this is currently allowed! just watch out for all the wasps, centipedes and spiders. And stay out of the water!
