    $200 for a 45 Minute Ferry! Van Life in ALASKA Isn’t Cheap (Haines – Skagway)



    Our road is leading south but that doesn’t mean the Alaska adventures are over just yet! This week we take our van down the Haines Highway, a single road that leads from the Yukon into a little corner of Alaska. This area is mostly only accessible by boat, except for a couple of roads 😏 Ferries and cruise ships roam the fjords, but to see the beauty of this region doesn’t come without it’s price. Perhaps THE most expensive ferry we’ve taken, given that it’s only 45 minutes. Join us as we see what treasures we can find, as we follow in the footsteps of the Klondike gold rush.

    We’re Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we’re feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we’ll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Argentina! 🇦🇷

      I haven't watched all of this but you can go to Hyder Alsaka through Stewert BC and it's beautiful there but anywho I'm a Canadian mostly nomad with two dogs . A Toy American Eskimo and Coonhound mixed with rotwotler they chase grizzlies away . They see more than one they think its a pack and run . Your dogs are ok .

      I guess Hyder but hope so cuz I love Stewart. It's so pretty on the way . Oh ferry in the Kootenays in BC are free . 15 min but free and lots of hots springs around there

      Once was not enough. I had to watch TWICE 🙂. Ben had the heart of a kid when landing his fish—I do too and I’m 74 🎣. River and Scout are enjoying spring time. Have fun and be safe !!!!

      Hopefully you can meet up with Chrome from Vancity Van life and Emi from "The cat lady van" as they should be heading North from Vancouver Island for their summer travels in the next week or two. They can show you many places to camp on the island and around BC if you have the time. There's also a lot of other van life people around the area you can meet up with as well.

      Another amazing video! Loving all the amazing scenery you are showing us, and how great to get the wildlife footage (particularly for me the Bald Eagle!). The rock glacier looked just mad and as history fans we loved the ruins (what was left) and the story of the Gold Rush town. We are guessing you might visit Hyder and more Gold Rush buildings?

      Do you guys have a bit of a hard time going back into a busy public place after spending so much time in remote places with just the two of you? It must be quite the stark contrast between being just in the van with the two of you and the dogs, in the woods and mountains just driving for a week or two and then boom your in a full and busy gold mining town around a bunch of hussle and bustle. I imagine it must feel odd?

      Forget the fishing Ben, grab a little trowel and go dig the mussels and clams out of that tidal flat! You would have found a treasure trove there.

      In 2019 I watched LEaW got from Alaska to Ushuaia and Trent and Allie go all the way to Ushuaia, now Overloading Sophia. I LOVE IT!.

      How do you guys plan on tackling a drive through Mexico. Years and years ago I remember the police pulling us over and my dad paying them. Now it's about a 1,000 times worse . I would never make that drive as we did from Texas to Guadalajara.

      I did the Inside Passage with my wife in 2010 and stopped at Haines and Skagway. Back then, the cost of the cruise for 7 nights was approx $700 each for a 7 night cruise. The cruise was from Vancouver to Seward and worth every single penny! Can't wait to get back and am very jealous of your current trip! Take care and drive safe!

      OMG how beautiful! Always love following your adventures but this one to Alaska has been particularly inspirational. We've only done one trip in our van so far but already want to ship it across to America for a big adventure like you guys

      What an amazing ferry ride, expensive but totally worth the view from the water. Love Ben's flat bread technique with the pickle jar, what do they say about necessity being the mother of invention 😅. We have super cold weather here, horrid cold wind from the north east, campers going home early as it's warmer in Scotland!! Stay safe, love and hugs Sue and Bryn xx
