Delhi, the capital of India and the second largest city in the country (after Mumbai), is popular with tourists because of the abundance of attractions and the intertwining of different cultures. Delhi has not always been the capital of India, but as the city through which all roads go, it has always played a major role. It was built on the plains near the ford of the Yamuna (Jamna) River, on the route between West, Central and Southeast Asia. It is believed to have been part of the legendary city of Indraprashta, which was located in the Mahabharata more than 3,000 years ago, but there is evidence that the area was only inhabited 2,500 years ago.
