The first time we caught a bus in Tokyo on our own, we got on the wrong bus. We had been out for the first time without our daughter and gone from Shirokane to Roppongi and after a short time after leaving Roppongi, we realised we were going the wrong way. We ended up in Ebisu so, after a bit of exploring, we went back to Roppongi and caught the right bus! Now we never get lost in Tokyo.
To the 'Northern Honshu' in late February guy, at around 23 minutes: No. If you're going to spend all that money to come to Japan anyway, it's not a great season for festivals or seasonal food, it can still be quite cold, and all that snow art stuff is up in Hokkaido. It's probably the worst time to come and the worst part of Japan to come to. Not that it's bad. If you like frozen rice fields and train delays, you're all set.
I feel like it's typical of the people whom make videos to be diplomatic, and as viewer seeking information, this approach can be frustrating. Thus, I'm not trying to say anything negative about Japan, but I would like to provide a more straight forward answer for someone whom it might help.
For you, I might reconsider that rail pass. I mean, I'd do the math, but also know that the prices Google Maps shows for the shinkansen are inaccurate (at least for JR East)… check out some of the local passes though – I think these can be a better deal. Google JR East Pass, JR West Pass, JR Central is weird and their passes are weird… you get the idea though. On the subject of socks, buy some here. Aeon, Yakuodo, and many other places sell cheap and good socks that are suited for the seasonal Japanese climates.
Shoe recommendations: Something waterproof. I prefer Rockport black leather oxfords, they cost $60 in America at a brick and mortar store, and are much more expensive in Japan/on Amazon. Word of warning though, the way they do the asphalt here is rough on softer soled shoes (that's why I like Rockport – they last). I had a pair of Eccos, and they got destroyed pretty quick. I also frequently wear Newbalance, which are popular in Japan, but they're a bit slippery and they're not waterproof.
Hey Nathan! After I went on my trip in late March, I totally understand why everyone here is so excited about traveling to Japan! I'm so late in commenting, but Tokyo was mindblowing! I felt very sad and nostalgic after coming home, and still do! The solo trip was perfect! I took tons of photos of sakura in Ueno Park and went to a few festivals! I plan on returning next year in late July/early August for the summer festivals and fireworks! Already counting the days until I go back (408 to be exact)! 🤣 I've also been studying Japanese more seriously lately and I want to becone fluent! I plan on going to Japan every year now! Can't wait to see where you go next! Your vids are very helpful and fun! I often find myself thinking about how lucky you are to be able travel there so much and for longer periods of time! 😃 I'd love to share my experiences and photos with you, if you'd like!
