I went to Philippines after it reopned in May. Had a freak accident, front disc brake locked up and threw me over the front and broke my hip. I went to a private hospital close to Davao City. I was in severe pain, they did hip replacement surgery there, I spent 9 weeks in private hospital, I do have money so no big deal for me. Ortho used prothesis too small for my body for the hip replacement. Long story short I finally flew back to USA and never walked for 9 months, I had hip revision surgery done in USA and now I can walk again. Ortho in USA said part was too small for my American sized body.
If you are not well, The airlines will require a "Fit to Travel" document from your doctor, I had to get one to fly Cebu Pac from davao to Manila
I had travel insurance and then when I tried to use it they wouldn't pay, so be careful when or if you get travel insurance, get something that is name brand in your country.

Hi… I have two biggest fears. Let me preface that with I am right now in Tallahassee Florida but in three days I'm flying to Cebu. As you can see in the picture I have a beautiful wife. My big fear is something would happen to her before I know my way around and how to get places. There's just not a whole lot of English in the Toledo area and not a lot of expats. It seems like in areas where they speak visayan there's not a lot of English used. I'm sure once I'm there for a. Of time and know how to get to places to pay the bills or to buy food or to get a tricycle I'll be more comfortable with that so hopefully nothing will happen to her and I can learn. Unfortunately I am kind of tied to that area because we built a small house. My second biggest fear is the cash-flow problem. I am 76 at have absolutely no family left anymore and am relying on a couple of friends to handle banking issues if I run into any problems with money transfers from my pension or social security. Hopefully there won't be any problems and I will have a nice income every month and since I will have no rent to pay should be able to save a lot more money I hope.

I moved here without any insurance. DUMB! I didn't even think about it. Got after. Had a backup next egg.
But everything worked out. Five of the best years of my life!!

I agree with the concern of medical service. Also if you go broke in the USA, Medicaid and several other programs will save your life and take care of your medical burdens. In the Philippines, if you run out of cash, and a major medical issue happen, you will die on the side of the street.
The Philippines is only a good country if you have at least $1500-2000 in passive income and the money will go much further there. But if youāre on a tight budget, the USA provides a better life. Food stamp, Medicaid, several programs that help the poor out. So I think the difference is, once youāre broke in the Philippines, the quality of life will be dropping exponentially and thereās no way back. In the USA, all these welfare programs compensate the suffering of poverty.

We have the same plans. I too will retire in Davao in 2024. I will do a recon to find good doctors and a good hospital. I am also financially stable, but I have a grocery list of health issues.
Healthcare in Thailand ( Bangkok Hospitals nationwide) give far better Medical care than even the best hospitals in the Philippines. Even " Old Dog Paul went there for Medical exams & workup.

I know guys who are live with shabu addicts and don't know it. When they bust her in your bathroom the guys will be busted as well. Be 3 years before he is charged. Let alone sentenced. My biggest fear would be missing out on all the Phils has on offer by getting stuck in one City / Province. So much to see / do there.

Sage advice Gio. Iāve always had travel insurance since the first time I traveled at 20 overseas. Finally came in handy in 2019 in Thailand. My gall bladder nearly killed me just from the pain alone. It was first misdiagnosed at the local hospital until I got to a top tiered hospital. Out of pocket expense was zero dollars. If I didnāt have insurance it would have cost $40,000. I donāt get how people live O/S without insurance and emergency funds? If you canāt afford it then you canāt afford to travel. Itās that simple. Thanks for sharing.
The healthcare is probably my top concern. At 63 I have the standard blood pressure issues as well as type 2 diabetes. Most of my issues are handled well with generic drugs. My first mission when I do move there will be getting a doctor and getting my prescriptions converted to the pharmacy there and Iāll probably make sure that is doable before committing to the move.

Gio, to be honest, I currently have two dental insurances, one from the previous job I retired from and my current job. I also have pretty good BCBS PPO along with Medicare. But yeah, you're correct that having health insurance is critical for any ex-pat.

Different people have different concerns and I think the Video covered most of mine. Iāll call them concerns rather than fear as itās less severe. I mean if your really afraid the boogie man is after you your not going to be able to lay down and sleep but with a concern you can. Some people might should be more concerned about their biggest enemy of all the guy who always brushes his teeth the same time you do in the bathroom mirror. The video already touched base on spending habits so Iāll move on to something else. Drinking. Thatās something that is guaranteed to cause problems down the road no matter where you are. If you have to drink every day itās time to fix that. STDs apparently some folks never get out of their late teens and still hang out with friends talking about all the strange they been getting. Well keep it up something strange will happen to your health, and wallet and if your like this itās time to learn life isnāt a piece of ass itās about not being a ass and think of something better you could be doing like leaving the Philippines in better shape then you found it rather then adding more hungry mouthās your not responsible enough for. Thatās it folks a lot of people should be afraid of themselves or nothing will ever be better.
The exit clearance would slow you down on getting back to the west on top of getting a plane ticket in case of a medical issue.

I'm healthy but you never know when you could have a stroke or heart attack and I can't think of anything worse being in the Philippines if it should happen. The Philippines in on the RING OF FIRE and if you follow the bible, the earthquakes and volcanoes will only get worse. If the truth be known, most men go to the Philippines to find a young woman. Find that young woman and get your butt back to the states where is much safer. Thanks, Gio for all you do for us
