Holi is a spring festival, also known as the festival of colours or the festival of love. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival which has become popular with other communities outside Asia. At this Hindu-Festival people celebrate the victory of the good over the bad and the beginning of the spring.

Traditionally in Hindu culture, widows are expected to renounce earthly pleasure so they do not celebrate Holi. But women at the shelter for widows, who have been abandoned by their families, celebrated the festival by throwing flowers and coloured powder. The special feature is that the people paint themselves with various colours and throw colourful powder in the air to express the freedom and to colour their everyday life. On this day all castes of the indian caste-system are nullified and put out of force – all people are supposed to be equal. This is where the idea to bring this festival to the rest of the world come from.

Holi-inspired events

A number of Holi-inspired social events have also surfaced, particularly in Europe and the United States, often organized by companies as for-profit or charity events with paid admission, and with varying scheduling that does not coincide with the actual Holi festival.

Holi4These have included Holi-inspired music festivals such as the Festival Of Colours Tour and Holi One (which feature timed throws of Holi powder), and 5K run franchises such as The Color Run and Colour Me Rad, in which participants are doused with the powder at per-kilometre checkpoints.
