Welcome to our Morocco travel vlog, where we embark on day 2 of our Intrepid tour, filled with unique experiences and extraordinary encounters. Join me as we bid farewell to our charming homestay in Moulay Idriss, Morocco, witnessing an unconventional sight of donkeys gracefully transporting our luggage through narrow streets inaccessible to cars. We then embark on an adventure, utilizing the convenience of Grand Taxis to journey to Volubilis and Meknes, Morocco.

Our exploration begins at the awe-inspiring Volubilis, an ancient archaeological site that unveils the remnants of a bygone civilization. We wander through the well-preserved ruins that tell stories of the past. After delving into the marvels of Volubilis, we hop back into our trusty Grand Taxis, enabling us to effortlessly travel to the city of Meknes, Morocco.

Meknes beckons us with its charm and fascinating landmarks. Our afternoon unfolds with visits to prominent attractions such as the Meknes Medina, and the renowned Dar Jamai Museum, which houses a treasure trove of artistic and cultural artefacts. As the day progresses, we have a wonderful opportunity to visit a local family home, where we’re treated to a delectable homemade camel burger—an authentic culinary experience that immerses us in Moroccan flavours.

As late afternoon descends, we make our way to the station, eagerly boarding the Meknes to Fez Train. Today’s journey holds a special surprise, as we indulge in the comforts of First Class travel, finding ourselves in a private compartment designed to accommodate six passengers. Contrasting our previous day’s adventure in 2nd class, where navigating through bustling crowds was a challenge, today’s train experience offers a serene and relaxed atmosphere, demonstrating how diverse Moroccan rail travel can be.

  1. I don't think there ever was any removal of "erotic art" from Volubilis, there are plenty of still preserved mosaic art with depictions of nudity in them that are for display for the public in the site itself and others in Museums. Volubilis ruins stayed intact for centuries untouched until the earthquake in the mid 18th century, after the earthquake there was some looting by some residents in Meknes, though Bab Mansur (the one which you mentioned had columns from Volubilis was build way before that in 17th century) the site was quickly later officially excavated and identified as a historic site, only about half the site is excavated and many ruins are yet to be revealed

  4. Right. An earthquake destroyed the mosaics. Lol. I think maybe someone didn't want them displayed in public or that people took them for "souvenirs". Enjoyed this episode Caroline. Train travel seems a bit of an adventure in Morocco too. It is good that you had a guide that speaks the native language so that you don't get ripped off
