In today’s video, we discuss new rules to enter the Schengen Zone for European travel, starting in 2024. The new ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) goes into effect and we discuss everything you need to know to prepare for your travel to Europe.
We give some background explanation on the Schengen Zone, the European Union and the ETIAS system, which will impact travel to Europe starting in 2024. We spent 9 months in Europe last year and plan to spend at least 3 months of year going forward.
New ETIAS website (coming soon)

▶️ We started our channel to inspire and share our world travel lifestyle, adventures, and optimistic outlook on life with others. After completing a two-year journey in our Airstream to see all 50 states and 51 National Parks, we left to travel abroad. We have downsized our possessions and sold our home so that we can wander about with only the things in our backpacks.
We love living on the road, traveling each week to a new location. We plan to travel extensively to every part of the world. Ours is not a slow travel lifestyle but rather a vagabondish one. The goal is not to check a country off a list, but to experience it by meeting new people, seeing how others live, and making new friends. We believe in laughing, loving, and living our lives to the fullest.
We are working hard to build a beautiful website where you can get travel information about the places we have been. In addition, we post blog articles to help you travel better. Our channel is a way of augmenting that effort, so sometimes we post videos about how to travel or a vlog showing our lives on the road as we do an activity or an adventure. We also post Shorts, so check those out, too. We hope to entertain you, but most importantly, we want to inspire you and give you the confidence to plan your own adventure around the world.

We thought now was a good time to do a video on the new Schengen Zone rules for 2024. We hope you find this helpful, along with the other travel and retirement related videos on our channel. We also have a website at http://www.retirementtravelers.com so be sure to visit that as well. Safe travels, John and Bev
previously I was con fused by the time limits (90 days) that one could travel in the zone and the time necessary to be out. I thought I needed to be out of the zone for 180 days and am pleased to hear that in fact it's 90 days. Do I have that right? Thank you!
I am angered at this new policy that Europe has put out; they have broken regulations with Canada and the United States, where we do not need a visa to travel. There is new information on the website explaining how much the cost and fee for your visa to Europe are, even if you're going for 6 days or 30 days. Not only are they asking for private personal information, but they're also asking environmental questions that they've never answered before. They also want to know 30 days ahead of time where you are staying and in which hotel. Europe has just turned into a communist Zone where you can be arrested and held for 5 years without question. These are the new rules coming out in 2024, brought to you by the World Economic Forum. and I thought Switzerland was a neutral country that stayed out of everyone's business. Now they are destroying Europe and the travel experience going to Europe. However, if you're a refugee, all doors are open. As I am a Canadian Citizen and a German citizen and I hold both passports, my German passport now gets revoked under 2024 regulations. Thank you, Switzerland, for Wrecking my citizenship in Germany. I hopefully will declare war on you one day. I am so angry at the European Union and the World Economic Forum that we should take action by force. These are Nazi Communists running those countries where proper citizens go to countries where they have family members and now can't visit them. That is a disgrace, and we should boycott them. Europe, do not serve Europeans in your restaurants in North America. Ask them to leave.
As a teacher and speech therapist, you guys are great teachers! Super job! I'm from Croatia but live in New Jersey!
Thank you for your video. I am from SOUTH AFRICA. Will this mean that you only have to apply for a shengen visa every 3years visiting Europe for 90 days at a time?
Well I know for a fact that it starts this year on November.
Super helpful! Thanks.
What are the reasons for getting denied of ETIAS applications for Canadians US and 59 ETIAS visa waiver countries? Why do Eu border officials deny people who travel to Europe with ETIAS permit and send them back to home countries?
I saw that ETIAS come into play next may and last for 3 years but i dont know when to apply for it or how long it takes to come throught if your going away early june
Great job and thanks for explaining 👍
You completely missed mentioning that ETIAS is a decade-long delayed reaction to ESTA, the program the US put in place first. Before ESTA, visitors from Visa waiver countries could visit the US without having to apply and pay for travel authorization. It would have been nice to discuss the reasoning behind both programs. Without that, it sounds like the Europeans suddenly came up with some new measure to annoy travelers.
Thank you so much 😊
January 3 I will be flying from the UK, back to The USA, with a short 2 hour layover (same airline) in Amsterdam. Will I need this new travel document for an in airport layover?
Just registered on ETIAS site but I'm told that the application is not available at this time.
I want to THANK YOU for helping me rid myself of unwanted items, as my wife n I inch closer to some sort of traveling…THANK YOU ,THANK YOU…..
New subscriber here from Tennessee. Im 57 and just starting to travel. Im not able to do full time, but doing 4 countries a year. Thanks for the tip 🙂
Sad to say Phillipines is not included in the list… I been working in Fance and UK as Filipino Overseas Worker
Excellent! Thanks for this video!!!
Hi there, love your videos! We are planning on traveling to either Munich or Vienna from Bangkok with 1 way tickets in October. We’ve heard airlines don’t like 1 way tickets and that the airline can deny you from boarding. We would really like the flexibility of flying back to Bangkok ( where we are retired) from wherever we end up within about 30 days within Europe. Do you know anything about this? Very much appreciated! Go go go!!!
very well explained, all the way through.
ETIAS will do nothing to help security but, I predict, will cause chaos and confusion when glitches pop up and some people are denied. this is, potentially, a nightmare in the making.
Great job putting this together and explaining this, really enjoyed the video.
Hi am maltese does this apply to me?
If not it means i can live in the schengen country as long as i want without authorisation right?
what if I have a dual citizenship from US and EU country ? I tried to get some info and no one responded so far . If you know , please let me know . Thanks
Hi, I’m a bit confused… My understanding was that when you go to the EU for three months, you have to be out 180 days, not 90. How did you get around that?
ETIAS will apply in Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus even though they are not in Schengen Zone
I can’t find it anywhere that they confirmed the requirement for ETIAS starting January 2024. All I’m reading is proposed dates with nothing confirmed. This kept getting pushed for months and years. I doubt they can come up with a firm date this soon. Do you have a link?
