  1. This is essentially US centric concept of race/minority category clashing with other people's one. It's bound to happen at some point because it white/black/hispanic/asian breakdown definitely doesn't make any sense.

  2. Isn’t Jilly Bing, a play on the Chinese word “Bing Chiling”? Which means Ice Crean according to John Cena.
I must say though this East Asian/South East Asian divide that’s occurring is pretty worrying, even though its right to have more brown Asian representation.

  3. Children are not yet familiar with the concept of race. Children have not yet learned to separate people based on race. My childhood doll was a cabbage patch girl, she was a blonde doll, and I am Chinese. As far as I recall, I was never concerned by my doll's race or skin colour, I merely noticed her hair colour in images after I grew up. – They should just congratulate her creativity instead of making such a big deal and complaining so much about race over something as trivial as a Barbie doll.

  4. She took a gamble and started a new business. Maybe they will launch more type of dolls in the future. Best of luck to her business

  5. I always saw Barbie as a miniature mannequin that girls could dress up.. think of it like playing with lego's (like I did) and build a house vs a real house.. THIS is actually efficient if your into fashion, and want to dress up a barbie-like doll vs a large mannequin, which is cost effective in materials..

  6. Why shouldn't people make products that represent them? Squid game is an extremely popular Netflix show with an all Korean cast.We know that these liberals would never create products that cater to Asians despite of all the diversity and inclusion they constantly harp on. If someone isn't willing to represent you, then you should represent yourself. Many people are tribal by nature despite whatever they like to claim otherwise.Conservtaives are just as tribal, but they don't harp on diversity and inclusion like the liberals do.The biggest virtue signalers tend to be the fakest people.

  7. Toys are not representation… and yet nothing wrong with if they want to make another doll that's not just more white gal… stop turning everything into super political thing… this is why the newer generation becomes so combative about everything

  8. 11:44: Today is different, but before the internet is what it is today, that would have been all but impossible if you didn't grow up in somewhere like LA, SF or NYC. For people like me who grew up in a rural area, Asian media was all but inaccessible. Back then you could only watch shows that were on T.V., movies that played in theaters and music on the radio or sold at C.D. stores, none of which had Asian media so Asian media was inaccessible unless you wanted to drive like 2 hours away to NYC.

  9. Tbh, I don't care. I grew up playing with Barbies of all different colors. I didn't feel like my childhood was lacking just because there was no Barbie that looked like me. I don't know. I guess the younger generation grew up different and have had more media representation than my generation (I'm Millennial). The only representation that we had was Rufio, Mulan, London Tipton, Lilo & Stitch and Lucy Liu. Therefore, from my experience, all my Asian friends and I collectively supported any and every Asian representative. Now, it seems there's a major focus on individualism and people supporting their own culture. That's all good, but I feel like we did lose a sense of unity within the Asian community. Just my two cents.

  10. What southeast Asian is complaining about Asian doll I wonder? First we had to go so much for Asian people to be respected in the mainstream, now we’re trying to divide even among the Asian race??? So what if it’s a Chinese doll and I’m southeast Asian. Damn people can we just be happy for Asian for once and not complain about the little thing??

  11. Why not an Asian doll that’s part Chinese, part Vietnamese, part Iapanese, part Malay. Or some such? Come on people, let’s do better!!

  12. I visited in the Philippines in 1996. I was at one of the malls in Manila and I had seen a collection of different Barbies. In addition to blonde Barbie, there was a Filipina Barbie in the traditional dress, Japanese Barbie in both kimono and yukata styles, Chinese Barbie in Cheongsam & a Korean Barbie wearing a Hanbok. I thought it was pretty neat. I wondered why I never seen these in CONUS (Continental United States).

  13. I disagree, dolls and toys are meant to inspire imaginations. As an Asian kid, my favorite barbie was the one with rainbow hair (coz I loved rainbow as a kid), my least favorite was the one with brown hair, because that hair colour was most similar to my own, so it felt boring. I don't think representation in toys, entertainment etc. is very important if you have enough support from friends and family irl.

  14. Yes white US UK Canada or English speaking world are very influential so whome world is white western English centric due English is and dollar are most popular language currency so their culture system look style even many bad bad bad.

  15. I like to point out that there are barbie dolls in china. americans always feels entitled that the whole world revolves around them. Why are there american brands in china but there are barely any in the states?

  16. "In Eastern culture, they don't really play with dolls." That's because Asian parents don't buy their daughters or sons toys. They grow up cuddling with their math workbook.

  17. As a mother of SEA girl, I think it's very important to expose my child to toys that look like her. I feel you guys are under estimating how early kids process beauty standards. I don't ever want my 6 year old kid to see darker skin or monolids as "weird" or "ugly". My daughter's first doll was a baby Moana doll, then she got an Asian All American Doll.

  18. I think that the real problem is that we as Asians don’t band together to stand up for ourselves. We are to blame just as much as other races that may underestimate us as who we are. I love every race and culture and respect them for their beliefs and thoughts. But…….we as the model minority Lmaf are labeled exactly for that. So let’s stop whining and get the respect we deserve!!!!! By the way, I’m hapa.

  19. As a filipino, i'm okay with that. That chinese american mother has similarities physically with my mother tbh, meaning she has a typical filipina look, the daughter looks like my niece. What I'm trying to say is that the doll's feature is also very common in southeast asia so why make this big deal. What's important is the doll is not blond lol 😂😂😂

  20. Good for her! I think that's cool she's doing this to fill that niche. I never played with dolls even though people gave them to me.. beanie babies were the best because they were adorable and you could learn about dif species of animals. I think dolls are kinda creepy in general and we should get rid of dolls since I feel like they do more harm than good psychologically for girls tbh in what a woman's role is and what they should be caring about in society

  21. Asian representation is strongly needed even in dolls although I dont think may or may not be important. But traditional dolls on the other hand are important.

  22. People who are complaining about how a small business should run their company should do it themselves instead of complaining. If you want to raise a stink then do it against Mattel

  23. Part of the issue is the overuse of the blanket term "Asian" to describe 20+ countries and countless more ethnicities and ethnic minorities. If they'd just called it a Chinese American doll, all of the controversy goes away!

  24. I think the doll is adorable!! People are coming waaay to hard on this lady, can there first be a start then more progress before people start bring out the torches and pitch forks??? Geeeeeze! Retract your claws people !

  25. What's wrong with NE Asian Americans doing our own things? We are oppressed, but we need to address the needs of Whites? Whites need to stop centering into our lives.
