The summer vibes in Amsterdam are just something else. All the canals, little corners and streets, in a relaxed chill vibe. We rented bikes and walked along the historic and characteristic Amsterdam Canals (Dutch: Grachtengordel) to just take it all in.
All sections in this video are from the first half of August, except the Canal Cruise, Begijnhof and last section. Those are from a beautiful Autumn day.
Amsterdam Summer Vibes
The Dam on the river Amstel. The capital of The Netherlands. It was originally a small fishing village in the 12th century. Amsterdam became a major world port during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. The easiest way to explore Amsterdam is either by foot or by renting a bike.
The oldest stock market in the world is in Amsterdam: founded in the year 1602. Most of the city we now see is from that era: the Golden Age. Even though pre-roman artefacts have been found.
In the middle ages the prosperity of Amsterdam started to grow. It traded with the Hanseatic League. This was a medieval commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds. Stretching from The Netherlands to the Baltic Sea. You can still see the influence these regions had on each other in the architecture.
Amsterdam is wonderful in all four seasons really. This is Amsterdam on summer vibes.
Canal Cruise
The main three canals of Amsterdam have been dug in the 17th century. This was during the golden age of Holland. The three main canals are: Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. This cruise travels over Prinsengracht.
This cruise goes from Westerkerk, past the famous Jordaan neighbourhood, to the river Amstel and then back around to Central Station.
The canals of Amsterdam are an Unesco World Heritage Site.
Rijksmuseum Area
The museum quarter of Amsterdam. This is the place to see Van Gogh, Rembrandt and many other Dutch Masters. The park at the foot of Rijksmuseum is used as a venue for concerts and events.
Brouwersgracht
Brewery Canal. This canal got its name in 1594 from the many beer breweries there.
This canal is at the north / west end of the three main canals. It served a a site for the Dutch ships returning from Asia. The warehouses are now apartments. And they often have red wooden window shutters.
Zuiderkerk
This is the first of the city’s churches to have been built specifically for Protestant services. The renaissance style church is a photographer’s favourite. With canals looking out on the tower. Three of Rembrandt’s children were buried there.
Nine Streets
The “Negen Straatjes” of Amsterdam. This is a shopping area with largely privately owned small shops. It is located in the canal area, near Jordaan. It is less crowded than the main shopping streets of Amsterdam. A perfect spot to wander the streets and canals.
Central Station
The station – like Rijksmuseum – is from the 19th century. A small walking distance to the main square of Amsterdam: the Dam (with the royal Palace on the Dam). From here you can see the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and the Nemo Science Museum.
Prinsengracht
A 3.2 kilometer canal. Built in 1612. There are a lot of historic sites on this canal. From the Anne Frank House to the Westerkerk, and the view of Magere Brug at the eastern end of the canal. Prinsengracht is the location of an annual classical concert: the Prinsengracht Concert.
Begijnhof
This is one of the oldest courtyards of Amsterdam. It was originally a Beguinage. It was founded in the Middle Ages. There are more Beguinages in North West Europe. It is a place for religious women to live in a community. Much like nuns, except that they do not take vows.
Magere Brug
The Skinny Bridge of Amsterdam, over the river Amstel. This area is at the eastern end of the Canals. The Hermitage is located here. The Carre theatre and the Amsterdam City Hall & Opera: Stopera.
Keizersgracht
The Emperor’s Canal. This canal has been named after the Holy Roman Emperor Maxillian the First.
