Be ware that that major earthquake in 1755 the most deaths was not because the earthquake per si, but was because the major fires that destroy all Lisbon and ppl dont have where to run.
Was the worst day for this earthquake take place, was in the all saint's day (dia de todos os santos) and people in their homes and in the churches, they lit the candles for all the family members who had already pass, and the shaking set off many candles that caused fires throughout all the city, the number of deaths outside Lisbon was very low.
Even in Mexico they call this day "día de los Muertos", in Portugal and Brazil we call "dia de todos os santos".
