Driving the Pan American Highway to Argentina in our camper van has given us some mind-bending landscapes to explore, but we’ve never been anywhere like this. There’s no feeling quite like wiggling through a 2,000 year old tunnel made of lava, on your belly, beneath the active volcano that formed it. Could you do it?

↠ A BIT ABOUT US
We’re Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we’re feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we’ll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Argentina!

Those things in the trees are caterpiller nests
Hi guys, great to see you back. Sue and I met you at the meet up in Vancouver, glad to hear you had a fun and busy time back in the UK. I am writing to say that I saw a you tube years ago that sadly recounted the destruction of thousands of mammals and other creatures at the time of the blast at Mt. St. Helens. Pure devastation within the kill zone, so to speak. Very sad. On a brighter note, I would like to recommend (highly) that you visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum which tells the story of the bar of the Columbia River which consistently provides the roughest seas on offer in the USA. Coast Guard crews from across the nation must experience it before graduation. Fascinating, brave men and women. Lastly, Sue and I both feel that you will enjoy Cannon Beach immensely. You are in for a treat. Safe travels.
Don’t forget to learn and speak Some Brazilian Portuguese language also when you go to Brazil 🇧🇷
Love watching your adventures! I was in Washington in 1971 as a young soldier on my way to Korea.
"Mi peros y mi "esposa" vamos a colombia… 😂. muy bien.
How beautiful the waterfall was. I’m want to go to the caves.
Those are tree worms and they are not good for the trees.
Ben, hablas Español muy bien.
Awesome video.
Pity Rosetta Stone is selective in their languages. As an example, I would be interested in learing Thai. Thailand is a very popular destination to visit throughout the world, and perhaps even retire for many people, but unfortunately, the language is nowhere to found with Rosetta Stone….This is just only one example, but there are many, many others as well.
There are more than, 7,117 languages in the world, and Rosetta Stone offers you only 24 languages. Does that sound impressive to you? They offer this sparse language data base only with a lifetime subscription of course…..LOL……Pity.
If you ever get to Australia there's some really impressive lava tubes at Undara, inland from Cairns. It's all guided tours, I was a guide for a couple of seasons, but well worth checking out.
i bet you went and had pizza on your Birthday in Nova Scotia LOL…… hahahah

The "webs" in the trees are tent caterpillars. They are a scourge that happens with regularity. Cutting them out of trees and burning them used to be the way we dealt with them. Now days one can get a bacteria that live in soils, called Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and spray it on the trees… it does not harm vertebrates, but is pretty deadly to caterpillars. One does have to be careful where one is spraying it to avoid harming beneficial insects & butterfly larvae. I still prefer cutting them out of the affected trees and burning them (when it is safe to do so) because they can harm trees if left unchecked.
You have probably moved now, but you can drive down the beach just southwest of Astoria for quite some way.
Hi ya Chesca, Ben , River and Scout, not me I’m claustrophobic won’t even go in MRI without sedation 😎. Knew The Goonies was filmed there but haven’t seen it. You all take care and stay safe awesome video. Have a great birthday 🎂 Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🌺🥰🎂🥂
I love this video, well done guys x
uh uh, nope, nope nope. Those caves are awful. Like being locked in a suitcase or smth.
I can't believe it is almost your B day again. I have been with you guys for over a year now. Birthday for you anniversary for me. I don't know if you got the answer you were looking for, I didn't read all the comments but those ugly web things in the trees are from tent caterpillars. The caterpillars are quite beautiful with blue spots but they do massive damage to trees. Happy Birthday!🎂
Those are caterpillar nests.
Yay we use Rosetta Stone too, very contextual! Very impressed with Bens Spanish on the phone! You guys are much more organised than us, six months ahead booking flights, we are like two weeks ahead kind of people hahah! Sending love <3
We call the web worms in Texas
Gosh just watching you in the lava tubes gives me anxiety!! Xx stunning video as always
Happy, happy birthday! 🎉 I believe the cobweb you saw in the tree was Forrest tent caterpillars. Nasty little critters that mess up trees. Loved the video as always. Take care
You are either very brave or utterly mad (maybe both!) in climbing thorugh those tunnels.
When you asked what film was in Astoria, all I could think was "If I found one-eyed willy’s rich stuff, I’d pay all my dad’s bills, so maybe, he could get to sleep at night…" Ben has good taste! (that is to say I was obsessed with the film as a kid too 🙂).
Another great vid as ever!
Great trip, even with fog. Happy birthday 🎂
I’m so claustrophobic, I am fast forwarding through you in the tunnel. I don’t know how you did that. I’d be panicking about spiders etc. 😢😳
Some think of The Goonies when they think of Astoria, I think of Kindergarten Cop.
Spinning web caterpillars make the web on the trees
Another great video the views and lava tubes were awesome although one view looked a lot like the mountain view in Maine how strange!!!! The creatures on the trees are tent caterpillars they munch all the leaves off…it's cool how your getting to visit such cool places that are the fabric of life in north america looking forward to travelling vicariously through your next adventure thanks for bringing us along Karl from eastern Canada
Astoria, OR; filming locations for The Goonies. It's also a nice drive across the Columbia River.
