VENICE, ITALY: VIDEO GUIDE THROUGH THE CITY OF THE CANALS, THE CARNIVAL, MURANO AND WHAT TO DO [2/2]

ITALIAN TRAVEL! OUR JOURNEY THROUGH VENICE CONTINUES! IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE VIDEO WE EXPLORED SAINT MARK’S SQUARE, WITH THE SAINT MARK’S CATHEDRAL AND THE VENICE DOGE’S PALACE! FROM THE SAINT MARK’S BELL TOWER WE ADMIRED THE BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF VENICE AND THE VENETIAN LAGOON FROM ABOVE, BEFORE JOINING THE CROWD TO CELEBRATE VENICE’S COLORFUL CARNIVAL! I BROUGHT YOU TO MURANO TO DISCOVER THE ART OF THE GLASS WORKERS, AND NOW I WANT TO HAVE A COFFEE IN ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COFFEE BAR IN VENICE, THAT HAS BEEN OPEN FOR 300 YEARS!

THE CAFFE FLORIAN
THE CAFFE FLORIAN IS A HISTORIC COFFEE BAR OF VENICE. WE ARE IN SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AND THIS IS THE OLDEST COFFEE BAR IN ITALY! THE CAFFE FLORIAN HAS BECOME AN ESSENTIAL HANGOUT FOR THE VENETIANS FIRST, AND LATER ALSO FOR TOURISTS. THIS IS AN ELEGANT AND VERY BEAUTIFUL PLACE AND THE ATMOSPHERE IS CHARMING. IF YOU COME HERE IN SPRING OR SUMMER YOU CAN SIT AT THE OPEN-AIR TABLES IN SAINT MARK’S SQUARE.

VENICE RIALTO BRIDGE
THE ORIGIN OF VENICE DATES BACK CENTURIES AGO. AFTER SEVERAL WAVES OF BARBARIAN ATTACKS THE INHABITANTS OF THE MAINLAND SOUGHT REFUGE IN RIALTO, A SAFE PLACE WHERE TO DEVELOP A FIRST SETTLEMENT, THAT WILL BECOME THE CAPITAL OF THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE. DURING THE YEARS THIS BRIDGE HAS BECOME ONE OF VENICE’S ICON, BUILT IN 1591 AND FOR OVER 250 YEARS THE ONLY WAY TO CROSS THE GRAND CANAL. TODAY THE RIALTO BRIDGE IS TOURIST’S FAVOURITE SPOT TO TAKE A SELFIE, WITH THE GRAND CANAL ON THE BACKGROUND.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE STONE BRIDGE OF RIALTO WAS POSTPONED MANY TIMES, BECAUSE THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE WOULD HAVE BORNE A VERY HIGH EXPENSE TO BUILD IT, AND BECAUSE THE OWNERS OF THE WORKSHOPS OF THE FORMER WODDEN BRIDGE DIDN’T WANT TO QUIT THEIR JOBS TO ALLOW THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE STONE BRIDGE. AMONG THE OPPOSERS THERE WERE A MAN AND A WOMAN. THEY WAS USED TO SAY THINGS LIKE: “IN VENICE THERE WILL NEVER BE A STONE BRIDGE! IF SO, IT WILL BE ONLY WHEN THIS … ” – AND HE POINTED AT WHAT HE HAD IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS LEGS – ” THERE WILL BE A STONE BRIDGE IN VENICE WHEN THIS WILL PUT ON NAIL!”. THE WOMAN WAS USED TO SAY “IF THERE WILL BE A STONE BRIDGE IN VENICE I WILL BURN IT! ” – YES, SHE MEANT THAT THING! – SO NOWADAYS IF YOU CHECK OUT THE CAPITALS OF THE COLUMNS OF THE CAMERLENGHI PALACE IN VENICE, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE RIALTO BRIDGE, YOU’LL SEE A SCULPTURE OF A THIRD LEGGED MAN WITH A HUGE NAIL, AND THE SCULPTURE OF A WOMAN SITTING ON A FIRE!

VENICE RIALTO MARKET
IF YOU ARE EAGER TO EXPERIENCE THE AUTHENTIC ATMOSPHERE OF VENICE YOU MUST GO FOR A WALK TO THE VENICE RIALTO MARKET, FEW STEPS FROM THE RIALTO BRIDGE. TOURISTS AND VENETIANS CROWD THIS HISTORIC MARKET OF VENICE FROM THE EARLY MORNING, WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE OLD PLAQUE BY THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE WITH THE RULES FOR THE SELLING OF THE FISH.

VENICE – CAMPO DEI MORI
AT THE FONDAMENTA DEI MORI THERE IS A HOUSE WHERE IN THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY ONE OF THE MAIN VENETIANS PAINTERS LIVED: JACOPO ROBUSTI, BETTER KNOWN AS “TINTORETTO”. RIGHT HERE IS THE “CAMPO DEI MORI” – MOORS’ SQUARE – NAMED AFTER THE 4 STATUES OF THE MOORS, THE PEOPLE WHO CAME FROM MOREA, AN AREA IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN GREECE.
ACCORDING TO A LEGEND THE MEN WERE TRANSFORMED INTO STONE STATUES AFTER THEY SCAMMED A VENETIAN LADY. THEN THE STATUES WERE PUT IN THIS AREA OF VENICE AS A WARNING FOR THOSE WHO COULD HAVE THE SAME INTENTIONS. ONE OF THESE STATUES DEPICT MR ANTONIO RIOBA, WHO WAS POPULAR IN VENICE BECAUSE HE WAS USED TO MAKE A LOT OF JOKES. IN THE 19TH CENTURY THE STATUE LOST THE NOSE, AND IT HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH A PIECE OF IRON. FROM THAT MOMENT ON PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT TOUCHING HIS NOSE WILL BRING YOU LUCK.

VENETIAN CASINI
THERE ARE DIFFERENT HOUSES IN VENICE, CALLED CASINI, WHERE THE NOBLES OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY SPENT A LOT OF TIME PLAYING, GAMBLING, AND ENJOYING THE PLEASURES OF LIFE, WEARING THE BAÙTTA, THE POPULAR VENETIAN MASK. ENTIRE FORTUNES WERE SQUANDERED IN THE CRAZY NIGHTS AT THE VENETIAN CASINI. THE VENETIAN AUTHORITIES REGULATED THESE PLACES, WHICH, TO BE HONEST, WERE NOT ALL DEVOTED TO EXCESSES. THE CASINO VENIER IS AN ELEGANT HOUSE WHERE PRIVATE MEETINGS TOOK PLACE, WITH PEOPLE COMING FROM ALL OVER EUROPE, EVERYONE FASCINATED BY THE CHARM AND THE CULTURE OF THE RICH CLASS OF VENICE. THIS IS A MYSTERIOUS PLACE, WITH SECRET PASSAGES,HIDDEN ROOMS, SPY-HOLES. A CHARMING PLACE REVEALING THE MAGNIFICENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE, HIDDEN AMONG THE VENETIAN CANALS.
GETTING LOST IN VENICE IS MAYBE THE BEST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IF YOU WANT TO HANG OUT AND TRY A REAL VENETIAN MEAL THEN YOU MUST GO FOR A “BACARO”. A BACARO IS A TYPICAL VENETIAN TAVERN, A SMALL PLACE WHERE LOCALS HANG OUT, DRINK A GLASS OF WINE (HERE CALLED “OMBRA”) AND TASTE THE “CICCHETTI”, FEW SNACKS OF TYPICAL VENETIAN DISHES.
