Japan’s Tourism “Problem” & New ESSENTIAL Things To Know Before Arriving In Japan | Travel Update
Japan is seeing a MASSIVE influx of tourists. With tourism almost back to pre pandemic levels, there has been alot of talk about “too” many tourists lately — more specifically, too many tourists in certain areas. Much like Tokyo and Kyoto before covid, local governments are beginning to raise their concerns about all the tourists clogging the streets and interrupting daily lives — which is, in turn, causing some changes with some iconic tourist options. Watch this video and learn more about what is happening in Japan and what to expect now that there are certain steps being taken to scale tourists back in some areas. Let me know what you think of all this in the comments section below as well!

I'm going in November for the maple 🍁 kowning it will be pack. Purchase all my hotel and plain tickets way back in June. For those really hot tourist spots plan the day at 7am. Plan early!!!
And please study their culture customs before you go. Things we are use too might not so with them. Please all treasures Japan and keep it beautiful
Altough I always go to Tokyo and Osaka to visit friends (plus even after 7 visits there is still a lot of Tokyo to explore), I usually try to get as much travel as possible in other areas as well. The last one before the pandemic was a lot of time spent in Hokkaido and Kyushu. My next one includes Takehara, Kinosaki, Takayama, Narai, Matsumoto, Nagano and Sendai.
There are lots of places I would like to visit in the countryside that don't have very good public transport and require cars. And obviously there language barrier is larger in the small places between my limited japanese and less Englishs speaking people.
Laughing at all the Weebs 🙂
Last Summer was so calm and peaceful (like it used to be) … hmmm,… after the Bubble Economy collapsed Japan decided to make the country the world's Disneyland instead of investing in exports and technology.
I just finished booking the gracery (Godzilla hotel) in shinjuku. A bunch of hotels available around the area and it’s probably the most populated area in Tokyo
Japan is always a country full of contradiction. Sure its tourism is back but then again, we see cracks in the systems where maybe its not quite ready to welcome the high influx of visitors back. Just gotta roll with it. Safe travels everyone. For me, I'll visit Japan one day but probably choose a region and just explore that area instead of trying to go to every popular tourist mark on the map.
I went to Japan this April and spent 20k sgd (about 14.6k usd) for 3 people (hotel, accommodations, airtix, event tickets like USJ and some admissions) This includes the cost of 14 days jr pass. We saved like 61k yen each person in transportation costs and went to these places:
Tokyo, Himeji, Hiroshima, Miyajima (jr ferry covered under JR pass as well!), Kyoto, Osaka, Uji, Kinosaki onsen, return to Tokyo from Kyoto.
As a main planner it was easy to change plans midway if the weather became unfavourable, especially in the main cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka.
So even if harb means well and recommends people to visit more less explored areas, it’s hard to do away with the flexibility you get as a first or second time visitor to Japan.
Is Feb a busy month to visit Tokyo Osaka Kyoto?
It's not necessarily true that tourists only go to the three cities mentioned. I was up in western Nagano about six years ago. At the Kurobe Dam, about one-third of the conversations around us were not being conducted in Japanese. In a mall in Matsumoto City, they had Chinese announcements coming over the PA (something about being careful on the escalators).
Or maybe I'm just being optimistic because I'll be spending 8-odd days in Shikoku next month and am hoping to avoid the flood of other tourists…
Hi Alex, My question is this. I will be coming to Tokyo in Novemeber. I am asking how busy does everything get for Japan's Thanksgiving Labour Day 23rd Nov?
Damn, I already buy a ticket for march 2024. Its gonna be super crowded I guess
I’m going in late Feb through early March right after the holidays and before Sakura season so hoping it won’t be as crowded with (other) tourists 🤞🏼
🎉👍
Funny how you completely forgot Kyoto was GOING BANKRUPT in the pandemic.
What concerns me about visiting the less touristy areas is the potential need for more advanced Japanese proficiency. Still, I 100% support going "off the tracks" and experiencing parts of Japan that tourists don't see.
&——&*(——)(+…………The Japanese side invented the term "treated water" and repeatedly publicized that the concentration of tritium is not abnormal, creating an illusion that nuclear-contaminated water contains only tritium and the concentration of tritium is up to the standard, so nuclear-contaminated water is safe. society.
"In fact, the composition of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water is complex. Even after purification, it still contains dozens of radioactive nuclides such as carbon-14, cobalt-60, strontium-90, iodine-129, and cesium-137. Disappearance of nuclear radionuclides in nuclear polluted water.
Three years later, the United States and Canada on the other side of the Pacific Ocean will be affected by nuclear pollution, and 10 years later it will spread to the global ocean.
I will avoid Tokyo most of the times. Seen it more than enough already

Im going to Japan for the first time in November, but i knew there was an overcrowding problem so I'm going to Tokyo and Hokkaido instead (maybe one day I'll go back for Osaka/Kyoto/Mt Fuji)
Managed to book the JR pass before the price hike, too.
You da maaaaan !
I want more restrictions on foreign tourists. It's getting to point that it's destroying ambiance.
Going in Late October. Planning to go to the big three cities but also planning to go to Hiroshima and Nagano as well. Can't wait!
going in October, first time out of the country, we're mostly using airbnb, still need to book for the Kyoto part of the trip, very seat of our pants. sucks being part of "the problem" but hoping to have fun, be flexible and try to find fun things to do and see that won't be so over run.
I’m in Japan right now, it’s crowded, people do not speak English! I repeat, the do NOT SPEAK ENGLISH! The few ones that are at the hotel, restaurant, taxi, etc. and MUST communicate with you, most of them only use a few words with a heavy accent and use google and already translated sheets of papers with general info to most questions of requests. This is not spoken in so many videos here in youtube. Even young people are almost not able to pronounce clearly one or two words in English, some do not want to at all, even if it’s their duty. Some people, very few people are really able to speak English with you and understand what you are saying and answer you in English. Be prepared for it, also many machines that order food for you or other things DO NOT have English options, if they seem to have some, it’s limited many times, many times, they just pasted some printed instructions on the side and hope you get it how to do it. Everything is crowded and with many Japanese visitors too, but it’s alright. The heat in mid September is very annoying still, so I stay at my hotel many days or half days, going out only for some specific things and for eating out. I didn’t buy a tourist JR pass, bc it’s not worth it, not in my opinion. I have Passmo Pass and it’s a lot more comfortable, I do not use buses, that’s horrible. I use the Subway, the train, the bullet train and my legs. All of it with the help of google maps, without it I would be lost. Having internet in your cellphone is a must. I have decided to give up visiting some tourist sites, bc every day it‘s very full everywhere and it takes forever to get somewhere, it takes a lot of energy to go here and there, I came here to relax and enjoy, so, I do not want to go there, take pics, go there, take pics, run there, take pics, that‘s hateful, but to each their own. Only, yes, you see a lot of overwhelmed tourist, I myself too, but at least I can se say that where I went and took my time, I really enjoyed, where I had short time to visit, mainly I really needed to buy clothes, oh, that was a nightmare, google maps can also ne wrong, even with the kind help of Japanese woman who used her own google maps and took me to that place, no success, google maps fooled her too. Once, I wanted to ask a question to a foreighner, to know if the parade group already pass through the area, they were a group of British old men, typical tourist, the one I asked, he just turned his head away and was so disrespectful, I was shocked that such people come to Japan as a tourist, if you are a rude selfish racist person, please do not come to Japan as a tourist, bc at the end you will translate that here too and act that way against local and non locals. The place I enjoyed the most, until now, was not a tourist hot spot and I really felt happy there. It was medium full with Japanese people, a young Japanese girl sat near me, I thought I ask her something that I really did not see already explained, she also shook her head similar to the old geese mentioned above, I think what many people do not openly say in those videos is that, only Japanese who live from tourism are happy that you are here, most Japanese do not actually want to see, sit, be, speak, interact, etc, with tourists. Do no worry, you will be tolerated, but that‘s it. If you are young, white, thin, female, well dressed (Japanese like), beautiful, etc. I bet some young Japanese guys want to talk to you near some bar, that‘s it. There are some Japanese old and young, who would not sit near you or next to you in the subway, bc you are a tourist, some other are very uncomplicated and sit their whole family next to you, so there‘s this and there‘s that, but be aware that Japanese are not specially fond of strangers and do your long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long homework: learn the basic etiquete, specially DO NOT USE PERFUME or STRONG SCENTED BODY CARE PRODUCTS, follow what other do, walk on the correct side of the street, escalators, stairs, etc. I have seen like what it seems to me many Russian tourists, i dunno what, but they are on the way of others, they take the space, they speak loud, etc. I guess they do not do any research before coming to Japan. Anyways, Japan is nice, but it‘s not a very friendly tourist country as many videos here in youtube say, that‘s the truth, hope it helps you.
the problem right now is that there is not enough flights going to japan and ticket prices are uber expensive.
We are just wrapping up our trip and I highly recommend getting off the beaten path. Kanazawa, takayama and Koyasaan were beautiful and I wish we spent more time there. Also it’s freakin hot. If you come in summer go north!
Just got back from a trip. August in Japan did not feel very busy, assumingly due to the summer heat.
What is the best Wi-Fi to use?
if all goes well, i will buy tickets for my 2nd travel this week and the plan is to travel on february of 2024 (1st travel was during february of 2020 sheesh, it was so long ago) i hope that by that time things are not THAT crazy , a man can cream isnt it? lol. But to be honest, for the way i do tourism and the things i like to do , like training in different dojos or doing some street photography i don't feel so discouraged about the current situation. But hey, to each his own, ain't it?
I’m in Japan right now and what surprises me the most is the smell of all the people not wearing deodorant. Nobody mentioned about that in any videos I’ve watched.
This makes me sad, I’d rather never visit Japan again and just let it exist as the wonderful place that it is and let it’s people be undisturbed than have it be overrun with so many tourists. I’m glad for all of the extra money and jobs this brings to Japan, but it’s a shame there can’t be some kind of decent moderation to how much people want to flood in to experience it. I too am guilty of visiting for the first time recently ~ my boyfriend and our two friends did our best to be respectful and aware of the culture, learn some Japanese, and treat everything with the consideration and cleanliness everyone has for their surroundings and fellow citizens there, but even still, you make mistakes or need assistance at times. It’s still a big burden I’m sure to have many people at once even if they’re trying to do their best, and many people I bet don’t try to be considerate, from what I know of how people act 😵💫
From what I experienced, Japan really seemed to have a strong culture of consideration, decency, and good will behavior when it comes to doing one’s job, taking care of surroundings, and being considerate of public space in general. It really makes me cringe thinking of how many people I encounter where I live might behave there 😵💫 I really hope that is not the case.
A little weird that the comments largely blame Chinese group tourists when the news about disrespectful tourists are actually people coming from Western countries like Canada and the U.S.
With the yen being so weak, the demand will only rise. Summer this year in tokyo was insanely busy, i only see it getting worse for the foreseeable future..
Could u make a video about the whole "radioactive water from fukushima" problem and the impact on tourism, please???🤩
they stop selling suica cards, but they are selling 'welcome suica' cards. because of chip shortages? And how are they making 'welcome suica' cards? They are one Time use and getting thrown away 😂
i go to japan from 16 of august to 5 of seotember…and i dont have problems
I'm currently in Japan and it's just as good, if not better than when I was there in 2018 😀 bloody love this country! Ichiran and coco curry house is so good😊
