European Motorhome Tour day 23 takes us across the Adriatic to the UNESCO city of MATERA.
Our overnight crossing with the Croatian Jadrolinija Ferry wasn’t quite what we were used to, more on that below!

Just 1 hour away from our arrival in Italy at the port of Bari lies Matera. With 9000 years of continuous habitation, only Aleppo and Jericho, with over 10,000 have more years of history. Matera is a must do if traveling in southern Italy, there is just so much to see, there were many exhibitions where you could walk inside the ancient buildings but we chose to hike to the caves on the other side of the valley instead, it was free and a great experience! There are no shortage of restaurants in Matera but as you’ll see from the video, between about 3pm – 7pm most are closed!

We stay at “Area Camper Matera” which for €25 includes a shuttle into Matera. The aire/site is very basic but you come here to spend the day in Matera and it suited us fine. Special thanks to the Pope for popping in, if we’d have known we would have put the kettle on!

The Ferry experience

Now we know what to expect it wouldn’t be so bad the second time around (Thats Andy speaking, Michelle still needs some convincing!)

1. Park up in one of the 4 lanes
2. You need to exchange your internet booking form for boarding tickets (+ cabin and restaurant if booked) at the Jadrolinija office located 200m in the direction of Dubrovnik on the other side of the road. You just need passports and the internet form.
3. Get back in your van and join the wacky races as you edge towards customs, the building infront of you.
4. Motorhomes are loaded last so no point getting there too early
5. Boarding is tight as you’ll see but just go with it and let the crew direct you
6. There are no instructions from the crew so make sure you leave your MH in gear, handbrake on and alarm off
7. Take your cabin ticket to the reception on the ship to get your room key
8. Book early if you want a “luxury” room but still set your expectations low and you won’t be disappointed! 🙂
9. Use the right restaurant!!
10. Get up early to see the sunrise, the coffee on board is good! 🙂

  1. Ha ha you've gotta love european ferries – Chaotic boarding and never leave on time but always seem to arrive on time at the other end

Maybe you guys were in the truckers restaurant the first time 🤣

The next leg looks fantastic 😍 A lot of our fav places 🚐💨❤

  2. I’m with Michelle about the ferry, definitely meh! Does Matera have vineyards? I think I have heard of a wine from there (hic!). Everyone loves Italy 🥰

  3. Michelle’s face regarding how bad the ferry was, really was funny and loved the fact she just ignored your 9000 year habitation point, reminds me of my better half, so funny😂😂😂😂

  4. Hi im living in KR and have been watching your videos. i and my wife are mid 40 and thinking to travel Europe with RV just like you guys after retirement 😊
enjoying and looking forward to seeing upcoming videos

  6. hi Andy and Michelle. after queuing in traffic for hours on end ,that first beer must taste fantastic. your locations are brilliant along with your filming. all worth the aggro in between. what a great journey you are both on. love you both

  7. lovin yours vids but Gotta ask some thing thats been really niggling me whats that camera you use seems to be on the end of a very long stick ? not the selfie stick seems to be much further away but follows you ? looks great

  8. Curious to know why you wouldn’t do the ferry again?
Beautiful town, and that walk down was amazing but scary…especially snakes 😱
Looking really forward to the next adventure vlog 😍

  9. We stayed in the very same motorhome stop in Matera and 2 days later caught the ferry from Bari to Durres in Albania – the ferry was soviet era and we were one of just 2 vehicles on the ferry.
You seemed to enjoy it as much as we did – please keep on posting these wonderful videos.

  10. Michelle, I’ve got braless envy. How do you manage to make it look like you are hanging free going up to the caves. I’d need to double up (and by that I mean sports bra on top of normal bra). You look amazing ❤
