Hd Skopje Centar – North Macedonia – A Tour Around The Old Town And Its Statues

Skopje Centar is the capital of North Macedonia and the country’s economic, political, and cultural center.

Skopje Centar is a city with a rich history that saw numerous conquerors in the past, starting from Illyrian tribes through Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, and Ottomans.

One of the first things most tourists notice when they visit Skopje is the ridiculous amount of statues. There are over 100 monuments and statues in the city center, and they are all within a radius of 2 square kilometres.

Some of them look pretty good, but many of them aren’t even related to North Macedonian history. Because of them, Skopje is constantly ridiculed. Around the city square, you’ll see a few gigantic statues, Skopje’s own “Arc de Triomphe,” and even floating hotels on the river Vardar.

These monuments were a part of the project Skopje 2014, whose completion required spending millions of taxpayers’ money. That was something the residents of one of the poorest countries in Europe were not too happy about. They felt that this money should have been spent on building the infrastructure of the city, such as roads, trams, trains, and many other things the city was lacking.
