Careful about the terms of your lease….sometimes you get to name the person who will occupy, it might make nomads tramping through more complex.
great idea, but one issue may be that condo owners will not allow different people coming and going, it would have to be agreed with the owners that many different people would be allowed to use the 1 year rental. It does sound like a great deal. My wife and I would be interested in this idea
The first question about how many cities in a wheel ran counter to my initial thought about how it would be set up with a wheel of travelers rotating through a city. This could develop into a huge undertaking with networks of overlapping wheels with travelers jumping from one city to another. Fascinating idea. Too complicated? Maybe.
Build it simple. Don't worry about things like car rentals and amenities included. Just have it set up as a place to stay at a good price.
Could a wheel negotiate with an Airbnb landlord to rotate through his particular rental at a reduced rate. Would that work for the landlord or would there be gaps in the wheel?
It appears there are two alternate ways to envision this. The traveler centered wheel with cities revolving around him or the city centered wheel with travelers revolving through the city. I am envisioning this as a series of interconnected city wheels with travelers jumping from one wheel to another.
Would this be a form of structured travel requiring the traveler to adhere to a schedule of availability? Would there only be a series of two-week gaps in each wheel for a traveler to fill?
Who needs Netflix when you have this video?
Just filled out survey. Great concept. But what would be a good minimum viable product? How can you presell?.
Which region could you set up fastest using your 2 networks. 8-12 week tour on a 4-6 apartment wheel that would be expanded as demand grows
I wanna be like you when I grow up.
Sounds similar to a timeshare. What happens if you are the long-term rent holder of a certain "accommodation" and someone else in the "club" trashes the place? It needs to be limited to people you can honestly trust.
Not sure if it would work for me, I don't live in a tourist center city.
What might be better would be several people, each owning a full hook-up motor home site. Then, expats in motor homes could time share their full hook-up sites with each other. If someone trashes their own motor home, it isn't the site owners problem.
Hi Dan
I am interested in this concept for 12 members doing this one month in each city.
Can I get an email to contact you and Iggy.
Myself and my wife want to this. Currently in Vancouver Canada
It feels like we may all benefit from one place to stay in each market and insights into what's around that. It seems the country report may do this. It feels like we'd want specific rentals that have reasonable rates and that's possible to achieve thru the county reports. I'd prefer to have that over being tied into a travel pattern with a group cleaning up after the same person in front of me in a travel rotation. The idea is nice, but this is how weekly and monthly rental discounts were born on Airbnb. Real question I'd like answered is WHICH Airbnb would be the solid choice in each market?
OMG!!! Best Video Introduction – EVER!!!! Great! "What if you want to….." Complete friggin opposite of Clickbait!! (what is that word?) haha. Thank you brother Dan. My younger brother from another mother.
I can relate to fast travel while working. We would do 2wks in Asia in the spring and 2wks in Europe in the fall. Whirlwind travel, go see all the sights in 2wks. Now that we are retired we are slow traveling and loving it. We no longer go to new places (we've been to over 40 countries fast traveling), but are going back to places we've been and liked, just living like a local…well, kind of.
His idea is great if you are the one deciding on where to go. Probably won't work for how we travel, but some people would like it. They have companies that do this, one month in 12 countries in one year. They arrange it for you.
I really wanted to take the survey but cannot Skip questions that wouldnโt apply to me. My overall view is that staying a week or two then having to move defeats the purpose of slow travel and your locked into a schedule. The small cost incurred my staying less than a year or 6 months in one place would more than make up for itself with the ease, convenience and flexibility gained. If youโre coming from the US prices (in general) are so inexpensive in Southeast Asia, and quite a few parts of Europe, that itโs not going to matter. You donโt need to save a few bucks. If you do you may want to reevaluate your plan.
I had a similar idea, but one week might not suffice for everyone. I suspect this timeframe could be flexible. The idea is similar to the concept of the 90s – timeshare.
I would simplify the idea. Maybe there are 6 people in each continent that rotate first. If for whatever reason a person needs to stay in a place longer maybe the other places rotate or it could be difficult. The reason Airbnb, and Agoda do so well is the weakest link in this arrangement could break the idea.
It may work for people who have a home base / condo / apartment to form a house swapping network…but it's hard to see how the nomad without a home base could integrate into this kind of network
If you are shooting for 2 week window in a place, then 2 bedroom is overkill, as it wont be cost effective enough to make it efficient, plus not accommodate solo traveling people, which is a large # of people to loose out on
How do you expect to be comensated for this, if you sphere this up??
What are the membership fees you think it will cost??
No use in rolling out the concept if people don't know what approx the above costs will be
Concept looks like a mini version of time shares from the 80's, which was an outrageous ripp off
Different variation of time share, using personal ownership as exchange does not appeal to me. I can go to any city in the world an book a cheap hostel for a few days, get an idea if I like the city and then book a monthly condo should I want to stay there. From there, just use the same concept in new city. I have done this all over the world (100+ countries) and it works. I like the freedom and don't have to pay any extra membership fees or belong to an exclusive club.
Also, when I was dating, I would set up meetings with international dates and often stay at their place for a week or two. Dinners would be on me. Locals know where the best food is and it's not a tourist trap,
Just saying but this smacks a little of timeshare. Since it struck me that way, it may strike others that way.
Iโm assuming itโs absolutely not timeshare but it might be a good idea to make that clear.
Keeping within the flow of the โwheelโ seems like it could decrease flexibility in locations.
The whole idea of slow travel is spontaneously following your own path, right?
Is part of the agreement of being in the wheel to follow in the footsteps of the people ahead of you?
Sounds good in principle but as already stated in comments landlords/owners would probably object to multiple people using a long-term lease. Getting people to adhere to this "wheel " concept would quickly be like trying to herd cats. A facebook group for slow travelers would concentrate a lot of local knowledge in one place and help keep costs down for all members
These are the kind of concepts I love! I would agree that there would be so many moving parts. There would be some locations that would be less desirable at certain times of the year. like, for example, Chang Mai during burn season. I would accept some of the possible drawbacks just because it is such a brilliant concept and would save so much money. Almost like "stick'n it to the man"! Ha Ha
Great idea, but it takes a group of sincere, dedicated folks!

What kinds of risks are you taking if you move overseas?
https://vagabondbuddha.com/our-liability-disclaimer-the-risk-is-on-you/
Why over complicate it?
Why not just create an application based on a formula that already works very well i.e Booking and Airbnb ! (plenty of software already available)
The issue is the pricing?
Create a paid subscription members club with appropriate rules.
Once members join they can then set up there own friends or group wheel 'selection list if they wish.
Or am I missing something?
Ok I'm going to fairly blunt about my assessment of your business plan. I think its a terrible plan. In theory it sounds interesting as a way to lower travel costs, but it would be a logistics nightmare to put such a plan together and may not even be feasible.
First off I would never rent out my property if I knew that 10-20 different people would be staying there during the course of the year. Insurance premiums would be very high. What would be the benefit to such a landlord to give a reduced long term rental rate to someone when essentially it is treated as an Airbnb?
Secondly, it totally defeats the purpose of long term slow travel when you need to commit to such a schedule. Slow travel is all about taking your time to experience different cultures and not being pressured to stay longer or shorter at a given place because everything is pre-booked. Taking away a traveller's freedom is a huge price to pay. Also as a slow traveller you can get pretty decent rates if you stay a full week to a month in the same place. Dan you have shown this in many of your videos.
Thirdly, how will you get agreement among the participants as to in which country you will stay for a given week or month? Who wants to stay in a place when its rainy season, or during the cold months. I don't know of many people who will travel to colder countries in the winter, everyone wants to be south! Also what if I want to be in a certain country during an annual festival or celebration of some sort. What if the weather turns bad for an extended period but I am forced to stay because its my week or month? How miserable! How will you compromise among participants when some prefer to stay in the countryside, or by the beach, or in the heart of the city? What if there is a family emergency or have sudden health issues, will the participant be forced to pay anyways?
To summarize this plan seems very restrictive and would take away my freedom as a traveller all to maybe save a few bucks. And there is no guarantee I will even save because there are deals and opportunities that can crop up at any time without notice. I assume there will be extra costs to pay to be a member as well, costs which I don't have right now. This sounds to me like a money making venture which only the promoters will benefit (and maybe not even).
Airbnb monthly prices are very competitive and coordinating would be hard.. the experience part is good though
Wow! just blow my mind…i am definitely keen on being part of the travel club..we are living in Sydney…and hubby and i just retired and travelling the world 3 months every year…how can i contact you? (late 50s )
I think the idea has a lot of value. As to the logistics there will definitely be challenges. But, you guys are taking that on. I would suggest a wheel that would go like 30 days at a time with a commitment of like 5 changes depending on the travel costs to the next stop. But, I think the greatest value to me is having a support network in place to get started with slow travel. You guys obviously did it but I'm all about making this as easy as possible. I think you're onto something!
Your background is so beautiful!!
Iโm definitely interested in this concept. I think a month minimum in most situations/cities. I would also be interested in a website where you could match with fellow travelers who were going to be in the same city, so you could share accommodation/meals/adventures. You could create a profile with interests, so you could chat prior and decide if they would be a good travel partner โ almost like a dating site!
