During the Vietnam-American war, the country of Laos was devastated from almost continuous bombing. Between 1964 and 1973, the country was hit by 580,000 US bombing missions. That equates to one bombing mission every 8 minutes, 24/7, for 9 years. Over 2 million tonnes of bombs were dropped on Laos; more than the whole of world war II.

270 million cluster bombs were dropped with an explosion failure rate of approximately 33%. This means that there are still around 90 million unexploded cluster bombs scattered across the country. At least one person is injured or killed every week from a bomb dropped during the Vietnam and American conflict. Many victims are children.

Whilst I was in Luang Prabang, I visited the UXO Laos Visitor Centre to learn more about the continuous struggle Laos faces from the after effects of war.

  1. It's strange you never mention that the areas the U.S. and allies bombed in Laos were illegally invaded and controlled by the North Vietnamese Army and its proxy organization the Pathet Lao in a gross violation of Laotian neutrality.
