Siracusa, almost at the south-eastern tip of Sicily, has some noteworthy history. Once the second city of the ancient Greek empire, this is the hometown of Archimedes. Siracusa’s most obvious archeological treasures are on the Sicilian mainland. That’s where you’ll find the Greek theater and the Roman amphitheater, but the city’s real draw is the island of Ortigia. At its heart is the duomo or cathedral. The duomo stands directly within the footprint of an ancient Greek temple – you can still see the columns, inside and outside.
