About SWISS (from Wikipedia):
Swiss International Air Lines AG, colloquially known as SWISS, is the flag carrier of Switzerland and a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. It operates scheduled services in Europe and to North America, South America, Africa and Asia. Zurich Airport serves as its sole hub and Geneva Airport as a focus city. The airline was formed following the bankruptcy in 2002 of Swissair, Switzerland’s then-flag carrier. The new airline was built around what had been Swissair’s regional subsidiary, Crossair. Swiss retains Crossair’s IATA code LX (Swissair’s code was SR). It assumed Swissair’s old ICAO code of SWR (Crossair’s was CRX), to maintain international traffic rights. It is a member of Star Alliance and a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. Its headquarters are at EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg near Basel, Switzerland, and an office at Zurich Airport in Kloten, Switzerland. The company’s registered office is in Basel.

About Airbus A330 (from Wikipedia):
The Airbus A330 is a wide-body aircraft developed and produced by Airbus. Airbus conceived several derivatives of the A300, its first airliner from the mid-1970s. Then the company began development on the A330 twinjet in parallel with the A340 quadjet and launched both designs with their first orders in June 1987. The A330-300, the first variant, took its maiden flight in November 1992 and entered service with Air Inter in January 1994. The slightly shorter A330-200 variant followed in 1998.

The A330 shares its airframe with the early A340 variants, but having two main landing gear legs instead of three, lower weights, and slightly different lengths. Both airliners have fly-by-wire controls as well as a similar glass cockpit to increase the commonality. The A330 was Airbus’s first airliner to offer a choice of three engines: the General Electric CF6, Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or the Rolls-Royce Trent 700. The A330-300 has a range of 11,750 km (6,350 nmi; 7,300 mi) with 277 passengers, while the shorter A330-200 can cover 13,450 km (7,250 nmi; 8,360 mi) with 247 passengers. Other variants include the A330-200F dedicated freighter, the A330 MRTT military tanker, and the ACJ330 corporate jet. The A330 MRTT was proposed as the EADS/Northrop Grumman KC-45 for the US Air Force’s KC-X competition, but lost to the Boeing KC-46 in appeal after an initial win.

  1. Dan, could you do a video commenting on the current state of award/points flight booking? It feels like there's so little award seat availability. The Aeroplan website has had a known bug for months that it won't show partner award flights (or even cash ones) with no foreseeable fix. Is it just a bounce back in travel and people spending the points they saved over the pandemic or is this also a cost cutting measure from airlines?

  2. Hi Dan,

I don't understand the hype about Swiss, no not at all.
I live in Zurich and whenever I can and have to fly with the Lufthansa Group, I try to do everything I can to fly with Austrian.

The staff at Swiss are unfriendly and simply lack charisma.
The food is also not good and you are treated like in a cattle transport.

I have to say, whether Lufthansa or Swiss or Austrian, the customer is no longer king there.

The focus on earning money at all costs will cost them their business.

At Austrian, at least the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The food is also above average and they at least try to give you as a guest the feeling that you are still a guest and not a cattle that has to sit cramped in a Swiss or Lufthansa plane.

Many of my frequent flyer colleagues try to avoid these airlines wherever possible.

To be honest, Ryanair is better in Eco than Swiss and Lufthansa… unfortunately, it could only come to this because they have a large monopoly in Switzerland and Germany and Austria.

Sorry for the long comment, but my frustration as a frequent flyer and status holder is now so great that I really wish there was much more competition here.

These machinations should be stopped as soon as possible!

  3. Swiss business isn't great but it's also affordable. You can buy a cheap eco light ticket and upgrade it for a reasonable amount to swiss business. For 400 chf more than eco for an 8 hrs flight, i find it worth it.

  4. Flyger du alltid till samma destinationer, NY, London, Dubai? Varför inte lite andra varianter såsom Paris-Kapstaden-Rio-Perth ex

  5. Premium looks nice. Food in economy from Switzerland long haul can be excellent. From USA not as good. European short haul all you get is "water" and a tiny chocolate. It's like a low cost airline and yet I paid 300 Euros for a One Way one hour flight from Ljubjana to Zurich. All other one way fares were half that; about 150 Euros. At least ITA serve a beverage which is a big deal now.

  6. I totally agree, flew Swiss C class a few times and I have to say it was a hit or miss each time.. not too impressive for the price tag charged indeed. Great videos Dan! 👍

  7. Frankly to say as long you don’t site side double seats in biz, swissair is ok. I had very good sleep from HK-Zurich -HK. For food, don’t not expect much in Switzerland. Oh, it’s way better then Lufth😅

  9. real talk – should i:
    1. train 2h 15m to catch this Swiss flight nonstop ZRH-EWR, or
    2. train 5h 15m to catch a Singapore flight nonstop FRA-EWR? this also requires an overnight in Frankfurt

  10. It's like "let's take one of the better airlines and take their oldest product with the oldest cabin equipment (2009) and then rant about it" – that's basically what it is, so save it….

  11. Its a shame you had a less-than-enviable experience on this flight. I would, though, say that the determining factor is that you flew on an A330, and not the A330NEO. This is a dinosaur, in commercial aviation terms. You would have had a much better experience on the B777-300ER. SWISS doesn’t go without some scrutiny. They shouldn’t be flying this product if they want to protect their reputation. Still, I wouldn’t vilify SWISS just yet, though, I would be very discerning as to which airframe is in use before accepting a flight.

  12. If you think the airline experience is bad, stop at the lounge in viena: a run down mall unclean bathroom & food area will feel like a luxurious experience. It was so bad I took pictures & sent to management – the ladies in place, were agreeing with me 🙁
