After World War II, the USSR placed a bronze statue of a common soldier in the center of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, a small country next to Russia.
For Russians, the Bronze Soldier represented the triumph over the Nazis. Russians wanted to remind the Estonians that the Soviets had liberated the Estonians from the Nazis.
On the other hand, Estonians felt the Bronze Soldier symbolized the Russian domination and occupation. Every Victory Day (the anniversary of WWII), Russians would wave the Russian (or Soviet) flag around the Bronze Soldier.
By 2006, patriotic Estonians had enough. They wanted the Bronze Soldier removed. Russians refused.
In April 2007, protests reached a crescendo when two days of riots erupted in the streets of Tallinn. When the dust settled, one had died, millions of dollars of property damaged had been caused, and the statue was moved to the Military Cemetery in the outskirts of Tallinn.
Officials from the Russian government demanded that the Estonian government resign. Fear of war mounted. Ultimately, it didn’t happen. At least, not yet.
In video Francis Tapon takes you on a short tour of where the statue was and where it is today.

(If you could have found make some phots of Estonian soldat graves dating back from 1920.)

ESTONIA IS NOT EASTERN EUROPE
ESTONIA IS NOT EASTERN EUROPE
Please see 2nd link in the video's description to learn why Estonia is arguably in Eastern Europe.
i understand it is just that us Estonians do not like Estonia being called in eastern europe 🙂
I know! Google "Where is Eastern Europe" and you'll find my article being the second article (after Wiki). Read it.
Estonia isn't Europe at all if we compare it, for example, to Sweden or Netherlands or to neighbouring Finland.
There's still stony age in Estonia.
not all estonians hate true..
next time a fascist imperialist dictatorships takes over Estonia, just nuke the country — not need to risk your life and liberate the country; this the thanks the soviets get for liberating estonia? is so, then next time… don't do anything
haha 😀 if u make question on street in estonia and ask, where estonia is? then like 80+% people saying its in eastern europe. if u then write it in youtue, there always shows up some angry dude who screams no no no, its not 😀
russians defeated and saved europe from the nazis, if u deny that – go deny the holocaust too. calling the nazis "people"? lol go read mein kampf… btw, estonia under the USSR was much better, economically — compare estonia now under capitalist reforms… sorry excuse for a country (like the other 'former' socialist countries)
russians dont know that but estonians where happy when they heard that nazis are coming to estonia in 1941, from there on Germany rebuilded most of the statues that soviets have destroyed in 1940.Germany allso brought new fire trucks to Tallinn because soviets took everything with them when they fled back to soviet union.Germany allso counted the ppl who where killed by soviets in 1939-1940,allso they helped to rebuld building that where burned or bombed by soviets,so when in 1944 the soviets came back ,yes they overthrown nazis, but allso occupied our country and killed everyone who standed their way.
Estonia is Northern, not Eastern Europe, and hopefully the Baltic states get decolonized soon, I mean how long can you ignore the Geneve convention and pretend that the russian occupants and their descendants have any moral or ethic rights to stay in the Baltics when they clearly don't?! May the Putinlovers find their way back home and leave the Baltic states alone!
cool video man
FUCK RUSSIA
Take the statue To moscow
Russia – the only country never defeated
To this date
I'm visiting Tallinn at the moment and didn't know about this. I think it was a good idea to move the statue to a more appropriate location. If ethnic Russians still want to visit it, they can do.
