Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a beautiful village in the Alpilles region of Provence, Southern France. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has a strong connection with Vincent Van Gogh, the famous Dutch painter who spent a year in the town from May 1889 to May 1890. He voluntarily admitted himself to the Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital, where he was treated by Dr Théophile Peyron. During his stay, he painted some of his most well-known works, such as The Starry Night, Irises, Self-Portrait and Almond Blossoms. He was inspired by the landscapes, colours and light of Provence, and often depicted the olive groves, cypresses, wheat fields and mountains of the Alpilles region. He also painted scenes from the hospital and its gardens, such as The Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital and The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles. He had a studio in the hospital and was allowed to go out for walks under supervision. He also received visits from his brother Theo and his friend Paul Gauguin. In May 1890, he left Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for Auvers-sur-Oise, where he died two months later. You can follow his footsteps in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence by visiting the hospital, which is now a museum dedicated to his life and work, and by walking along a trail marked with 21 panels reproducing his paintings. You can also see some of his original works at the Musée Estrine, which hosts temporary exhibitions on Van Gogh and other artists.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has some remarkable Roman monuments that testify to its ancient history and culture. The most famous ones are the Triumphal Arch and the Jules Mausoleum, which are located at the entrance of the ancient city of Glanum, across from the Antiques. The Triumphal Arch dates from around 20 AD and commemorates the Roman conquest of Gaul with its bas-reliefs depicting captives and trophies. The Jules Mausoleum is a funerary monument built by a local family who had received Roman citizenship and the name of Julius from Caesar. It has a unique structure with a rectangular base, a double-entry arch and a round temple with statues of the deceased. The ancient city of Glanum itself is a fascinating site to visit, as it preserves the remains of various buildings from the Gallic, Hellenistic and Roman periods, such as temples, baths, theatres, forums and houses. You can also see the Glanum Dam, which is one of the oldest dams in Europe and was used to supply water to the city. Other Roman monuments in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence include the Château de Roussan, which has an 18th century wing built on Roman foundations, and the Church of Saint-Pierre, which incorporates some ancient columns and capitals in its façade.
