In France, the southern city of Nîmes has a reputation for being the “Roman Cty” of France thanks to the numerous architectural wonders that the city has inherited from its time in the Roman Empire long ago. Nîmes is very proud of all of this Roman heritage as an important part of their history, culture and the identity of the city in general. This goes from the big monuments such as the arenes de Nîmes (the Roman arena) to the Maison carrée, to the many random statues of Roman emperors scattered all around the city today.
For this reason, once a year, Nîmes hosts a big festival to celebrate this Roman cultural heritage, during which a big fight is held in the ex-gladiator arena in the centre of the city, many tents are set up to sell things, explain the roman history, imitate the lifestyle of the ancient Romans and it is tradition for everyone to dress up in Roman outfits!
