Running your first ultramarathon can be a wildly overwhelming commitment. How on Earth do you get yourself from just some schlub on the couch to crossing the finish line?

And when I say ‘crossing the finish line,’ I mean comfortably. I don’t want you collapsing at the end like some battered opponent from Rocky 7, 8, 9 or 10.

So today I’m going to share what I think are four keys or essentials to successfully running your first ultramarathon.

For a little context, I DNFed my first attempt back in June, made some changes, and came back in late October finishing comfortably.

And those four changes are as follows: Coaching, Strength Training, Nutrition, and for lack of a better description… Skin care.

Let’s break ‘em down, shall we?

  1. Awesome! The coaching angle is interesting. Last week I watched the 1 hour Backcountry video of Karel's PCT record attempt on youtube. Outstanding! What was your biggest takeaway from the coaching (apart from finishing the race)? I think for relative newcomers to race prep, it's the accountability and regular schedule that creates the compounded benefits. Must be so much harder to skip any session if you know your coach will be asking about it. Also, how useful was the technical analysis and did the coaching also cover race nutrition or you had to figure that out yourself?
