coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe s such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and kidney failure.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

On February 28, CDC raised the South Korea, Italy and Iran travel advisory to highest level. Travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the above countries and mainland China. Travel advisory to Japan has been raised to level 2, older adults and those with chronic medical conditions should consider postponing nonessential travel.

As of March 2, foreign nationals who have traveled to Iran within the last 14 days are denied permission to travel to the US. US citizens and permanent residents returning to the United States who have traveled to Iran within the previous 14 days must enter through an approved airport.

The coronavirus has spread to at least other 30 other countries. The most badly affected include Japan, with 850 cases, including 691 from a cruise ship docked in Yokohama, and four have not survived. Italy has recorded at least 1,100 cases and 29 have not survived, while South Korea has recorded more than 4,212 cases and 22 have not survived.
