I was in downtown central Kyiv for 7-8 weeks this summer and felt very safe. I flew to Moldova and took car service to Odesa, then to Kyiv. And same on reverse. No issues at border and private car was much more expensive but also much faster than bus when they need to look at many documents and look in many bags
Planning on visiting for a few weeks this coming August. See if I can find my relatives in Chernivisti.
