The Picos de Europa is a mountainous formation located in northern Spain, constituting the central part of the Cantabrian mountain range. Despite not being very extensive, its proximity to the sea makes it rich in geographically interesting features. The area has been a national park since 1918, making it the oldest and most visited in Spain after the Teide National Park in Tenerife. In 2003, the park was declared a biosphere reserve, and since 2017, two forest areas within the park have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.”

It is a limestone formation with an area of 674 km², extending across the autonomous communities of Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and León, with several peaks reaching over 2,500 meters in altitude, near the Cantabrian Sea coast (the northernmost areas are only 15 km from the coast). Although geographically part of the Cantabrian range, the Picos de Europa are considered an independent unit due to their more recent formation. They are divided into three massifs: the western or Cornión, the central or Urrieles, and the eastern or Ándara.

The Picos de Europa is the third-highest mountain range on the Iberian Peninsula, after the Sierra Nevada and the Pyrenees. The highest mountains are in the Urrieles massif, known for being the most rugged of the three, with 14 peaks exceeding 2,600 meters in altitude. The Torre Cerredo is the highest, reaching 2,650 meters. Another notable mountain is the Naranjo de Bulnes (in Asturian: Picu Urriellu), whose first ascent in 1904 is considered the starting point of Spanish mountaineering. This first ascent was made by Pedro Pidal, Marquis of Villaviciosa, and his climbing companion and guide Gregorio Pérez Demaría (known as cainejo), a shepherd from the mountain village of Caín in the Posada de Valdeón municipality.

In the western massif, or Cornión, named for its silhouette resembling a horn when viewed from the west, the peak of Torre Santa (also known as Peña Santa de León) stands out. Its altitude of 2,596 meters surpasses the next peak in the massif, Torre de Santa Maria (also known as Peña Santa de Enol), by 110 meters. Due to these mountains, the western massif is also known as Peñas Santas.

The eastern massif, also called Ándara because of the cirque of the same name, is the most modest both in terms of altitudes and verticality. Its highest peak is Morra de Lechugales, at 2,444 meters.
