The Heinzelmännchen Market, in the old town, is dedicated to the Heizelsmanchen, or ‘house elves’ that were said to live amongst the homes of Cologne.

As well as the house elves, we will see plenty of festive fare and of course glühwein, served in some very special mugs. Who knows, we may even take to the ice, as this market has its very own ice-rink at the heart of it.

If we have time, we will visit the Cathedral market in the shadow of Cologne’s Gothic Cathedral. There we will find bright red stalls surrounding a giant Christmas tree, and garlands of golden lights stretching over our heads, making it seem like we are beneath a canopy of stars.

So come and explore with myself and Anna as we wander the ancient streets of Cologne and enjoy some festive fun and winter cheer as we explore my favourite Christmas markets.

  1. Such a splendid Christmas market with a huge range of interesting stalls. Just as well there's no chance to make purchases from here. I love all the decorations and wooden items – especially the walking chicken. Hope you found some Gluhwein afterwards…
