My local Christmas market may sell curry bratwurst, gluhwine and nick-nacks, but surely it can’t compete with the real thing? This was my first visit to a genuine German Christmas market, and in some ways I was very impressed, and in some ways I was let down. The next time I’m in Berlin I’ll try another Christmas market.

  1. My only German Christmas market was in Cologne about 25 years ago and I thought it was special but compared to the Berlin market Cologne was tiny. From what I remember the market in Cologne sold Glühwein and food but also gifts that expect from a market, gingerbread, wooden houses, beer mugs, etc.

  2. That so-called Christmas market looked exactly like the one in Edinburgh! Full of overpriced tat, full-to-bursting rubbish bins, food and drink stalls and fairground rides. I visited the market in Nuremberg a number of years ago – 18 months after the Berlin Wall came down – and it really was a genuine Christmas market, with stalls selling handmade wooden gifts and decorations, without any fairground rides. You’ll have to go elsewhere for the real thing, I think!

  3. What a pitty. Just 5-10min from your first S-Bahn Station at Hackescher Markt are at least 3 christmas markets that are in a more traditional style. Happy Christmas Scott, Tom from Berlin ❤

  4. You can't beat a German Christmas market! I often go to Braunschweig for the holidays and love going to all the vibrant stalls and markets.

  5. Oh, Scott! I'm disappointed in you with this one. There are so many much nicer markets in the center of Berlin. And nearby there are good markets in Spandau and Potsdam, too. I took in 6 or 7 markets this past weekend, and they all looked better than this one.

And I can't imagine any place in Berlin that you can't get closer to by public transport!

  6. Another cosy little adventure! Thanks, mate! Never ceases to amaze me how when travelling you trawl through abandoned streets searching for this or that attraction, when you suddenly turn a corner and everyone's there and it's absolutely packed! Then you leave following the slipstream of other guest and in two minutes you're once again alone in an empty semi-dodgy side street. 😂

  7. Great video the drone footage was just wonderful .Must admit I never know when I'm watching a time lapse … 😊 But them I'm really only enjoying the views in this case of Glen Etive ..Thanks Murray your videos never fail to lift my spirits …😊

  8. Brilliant video Scott. Apparently though, my wife (Polish) said that Dresden has the best traditional German Christmas market or maybe the biggest. If your still in Germany, maybe worth travelling to?
    Love your video's.

  9. Must have been Berlin at the same time as you, done most the markets in the centre, this once looked fantastic, much better than George square 😂

Also noticed the pavements. Went against my thoughts on German sensibilities… the place was like an ice rink everywhere.

  10. I went to the one in George Square Glasgow. I lasted all of 15 minutes. Not for me I'm afraid. Too bright too busy too noisy. And I got completely ripped off. £7 for a currywurst which had hardly any sausage. Admittedly it did taste nice though.
Anyway, this one in the video looked the same only multiplied by 10. Total nightmare for me. I think I'll leave it to those who enjoy such things in the future.

  11. You did better for food than I did. When visiting the Christmas Market at Manchester on Saturday I was hoping to find a place that sold Currywurst (blame Steve Marsh for making me crave that). Plenty of food stalls selling different foods (not all German) and a lot of places selling alcohol, but no sign of any sausages. It was raining, time was short, and a pro Palestine demonstration getting ever closer as I walked around; I decided to give up 😂

  12. If you wanted other Scottish links, Augsburg in Bavaria is twinned with Inverness- a city about one tenth of Augsburg's size by population – and it has a Christmas Market – usually around the Rahthaus Platz. Glasgow is twinned with Nurnburg – perhaps similar sizes by population, and there is a scottish stall at Nurnburg's Christmas or Weinachts Markt.

  13. Not sure if it was worth you walking through some of those super dodgy areas just to eat two sausages. Also I'm not sure how good your German is but the stalls were offering all sorts not just the food items you mentioned, the mushrooms you missed looked interesting. At least you didn't have to 'get up to cruising altitude ' in this video for a change! Stay safe!

  14. I am in stitches here from your "short" walk to the market in pitch darkness. When you hit the apartments, I thought "oh no"..Red light district next. Glad you got there in one piece. Thanks for the giggles and your great video's. Merry Xmas

  15. I am sorry , but you visited the worst Christmas market in Berlin . You visited a Fair ground . Next time , go to Gendarmenmarkt . Nice buildings around and a real Christmas market Atmosphere.

  16. Hey Scott, a brilliant video! I was a little uneasy at the outset, with your feelings of uncertainty as you left some of those modern Berlin railway
stations. With not quite knowing where you were after leaving the station. Never feel concern about getting lost, as all of us loyal Planes, Trains,
Everything subscribers are willing to get lost with you. And when it comes to maps, just check the spelling, they are just spam backwards. Big
thumbs up to that sausage on a roll. (Krakow Sausage) Cooee, it blew me away! Well done, great German Winter Market outing!

  17. It's just a fun fair, like Hyde Park in London, next time try Cologne 🎄🎄🎄
The word Christmas is probably not even mentioned because the immiigrants don't want the hear it 🙄

  18. Hey Scott, where was that market? As a regular visitor of Berlin my experience of the public transport is that you come to almost every place without kilometers of walking. The combination of bus, tram, u-bahn and s-bahn is really excellent.
