The time I spent in the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeastern India were a real treat. For nearly two weeks in March of 2019, I visited larger cities in the area as well as tiny towns, I went on game drives in national parks, I explored beautiful cultural and historical attractions, and I ate some of the best food I’ve ever eaten in my life. The people I encountered were so warm, friendly, and welcoming and I can’t thank them enough. Come along with me on my incredible adventures in Assam and Meghalaya!

On my fourth and final night in Meghalaya, I decided to wrap up my time in this beautiful and pristine state with a quick Khasi language lesson. The Khasi tribe is one of the three main tribes of Meghalaya. My boy Paul put me through a crash course of Khasi basics. He told me that the language is closer to those spoken in Cambodia and other southeast Asian countries. Here are the words and phrases he taught me to say:

-Hi
-Bye
-How are you?
-Nice to meet you.
-Where are you from?
-What do you do?
-What do you do for a living?
-What is your name?
-How old are you?
-Family
-Mom
-Dad
-Brother (younger, middle, older)
-Sister (younger, middle, older)
-Car
-Airplane
-Walking
-Water
-House
-Dog
-Cat
-Food
-Chai
-Coffee
-How much does it cost?
-Can I get a discount?
-One
-Two
-Three
-Four
-Five
-Six
-Seven
-Eight
-Nine
-Ten
-Monday
-Floor
-Roof
-Light
-Fire
-Sugar
-Hair
-Haircut
-Jacket
-Cell phone
-Camera
-Bangladesh
-I love you
-Welcome to Meghalaya

So how did I do in my first Khasi language? Do you speak Khasi? If you do, what are some other words and phrases I should know? Let me know in the comments!
