After a difficult time last week, we escape to a remote lake in Guanajuato to de-compress and find some peace and quiet. Little did we know that solitude comes at a cost. We find ourselves almost stranded, with Ben putting on the drive of his life – we’ve never put Sophia through these kinds ofo conditions before, and just when we think it’s all over, Mexico isn’t finished with us just yet.

โ A BIT ABOUT US
We’re Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (๐ถ ๐ถ ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we’re feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we’ll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Argentina!

It is a floating vegetation and it moves around the wind can blow it out and you can takeoff in your boat but when you come back the wind has blown it back in and will choke off your impeller and overheat your boat motor. I live in Louisiana and we have that crap every where lol
Good to see you guys. Could the lake level be related to a hydro electric plant of some sort. Iโve seen lakes before where they open huge gates and allow the water to flow through turbines to generate electricity then pump it back again when electricity demand is low at night.
Did you visit Guanajuato? They have a museum with mummified bodies! San Miguel De Allende is a beautiful place, assuming you are heading south. Enjoy Mexico City ๐
What a mix of feelings this episode was, have a great week xx
There's something about live brass instruments that just hits different
Wow, this town is stunning. Your breakfast looked sooo yummy! Lol the stress with all the mud and narrow streets.. poor you ๐ข you guys were successful and made it though, thank goodness!
Aw seeing that wedding parade was cool!
That church is stunning, love that itโs pink. Itโs so intricate โค
That view from the restaurant. Stunning โค๐ฏ
So glad you eventually got a lovely place to chill out.. and great driving Ben, I used to hate 'squeaky bum moments' driving our campervan… so respect to you!! (we once got caught out in the French Massif Central when the snow came down, all I could think about was wishing I was back in my 'normal size car' with my winter tyres on!!)
Superb bit of driving Ben , getting out of those mud flats , have you ever thought of becoming an hgv driver , and driving a 44 tonner for a living , you would make a fantastic lorry driver , fantastic bit of driving . The piece and quiet at the beginning of the video, you truly needed , it helps no end believe me , 2 years ago our 11 year old at the time , disabled daughter had a cardiac arrest due to sepsis and was in a coma for 10
Days, we both struggled and even now get flashbacks , but I didnโt want to speak or see anyone, and the piece and quiet and pulling myself away from people and crowds really helped with the pain , so I can truly understand why you feel far better after a while in the quiet . Glad youโre both smiling now .
Super driving Ben! And if you did not have those tyres, just imagine.
what a great name for a drink Squirt hahaha ๐ how cool the balcony dogs,
Haven't read all the comments so apologies if anyone else has answered. Where did all the water go? Some very large lakes & lagoons are actually slightly tidal. They are so large that they're affected by gravitational pull. So at times there is more water on one end than the other, not by a massive amount but enough to make the water "disappear " for a while.
That was really a beautiful town!!!
That town looks beautiful. ๐
I feel your pain trying to navigate those tiny roads. We once had to unhitch our caravan and manually reverse it because we couldn't get round a tiny cobble street, corner in France ๐๐ I'm sure it ended up on YouTube somewhere making fun of idiot tourists. You handled this really well, kudos!
So fun to see you enjoying SMA. We lived there in 2016 and loved it – going back for a visit in a few months and so excited to see the place and visit friends. Glad you had a fantastic time recalibrating! And there is indeed a coffee table book of photos of many of the gorgeous doors!
Mexico really is a trying place, you two have your work cut out. Loving the videos, inspired to get our van over there in the future
Lovely video. I hope you guys are going to Oaxaca…. same kind of magical mexican city.
Squirt is the best. Itโs grapefruit soda and the quickest short cut for margaritas. See if you can find the red squirt.
Nothing worse than driving through streets in our all be it small vans compared to actual rvโs.
I don't know if you guys been to Rivera Maya, it's near Cancun, the wife and I were there for our honeymoon. It was beautiful, but abit of a tourist trap. Check it out if you guys are interested. Hope it helps. Fyi, if you have "nats (small flies" in your van, you can get rid of them by 1. getting a plastic cup 2. apple ciidar vinear 3. fill it in the cup about 2/3 the way up 4. put clear wrap on top of cup and rubber band around the cup 5. final step, poke holes on top of the plastic wrap (in the morning, you'll see the tiny nats/flies floating on top of the liquid and no more flies in your van. Hope it helps. ๐
Bennnnnnnn!!!!!!! The metre countdown to the main road ๐๐๐ Wow – amazing job driving. And Scout – there's nothing I love more than a dramatic dog ๐
Amazing place! Probably one of the best kept secrets in North America.
Glad you're feeling better. Great video.
๐ great job Ben , you two are very gutsy to be driving unknown roads and places in a foreign country. Hats off!
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to the fun times in small villages.
Squirt Soda is delicious, unless you can't have citrus.
Fresh water? Canโt be tidal? That is some water usage.
We love to watch you guys travel . My 13 teen year old , we watch you guys together. It's the only time he stays put, lol. Nice driving in that rain and mud. ๐
One thing Iโm not sure anyone has mentioned if you do find yourself with very little traction letting air out of your tyres will give you a much larger footprint, of course you want to be able to air them back up after.
Loved the video today guys keep them coming and keep being you natural selves โค
I 've always wanted to go to Mexico but man, your videos make it really difficult for me not to book a ticket RIGHT NOW!!!
BugWall should have stitched advertising on both sides of the screen ๐
Glad you guys managed to get out before the rain got worse!!looking forward to seeing more of 'San Miguel' ๐ค
In 1958 my family drove their new Mercury Montclair down to Mexico City I remember once putting it on a big raft to cross it across a river, etc. Best wishes.
Looks like after the rain and bad roads,it was beautiful. Ben great job maneuvering throught the greasy roads. Looks like I'm a week behind, was down with covid๐ข. Have a great week and stay safeโค
Hey guys! Have you seen Flipping Bangers, the UK show where they buy cars no-one else wants and restore them like magic? I think Gus Gregory and Ben are so much alike, Gus could be his dad, or a future Ben. I find him very charming ๐ What say you?
Loved that, what a place, and what extremes! Well driven Ben. Trudy and Sophia showing what tough birds they are… who need s4 wheel drive/ overlanders eh?… couldnt help but chuckle though! Chesca saying you were off for a refined date night… cut to her eating cheesy mash out of a bowl with a spoon๐
