RUINS AND SKULLS OF CAMBODIA
This is a country in Southeast Asia that has been dubbed the Killing Fields, a dark period in the history of Cambodia, where at one point in time, a little more than 40 years ago, a ruler who took over the country started purging the educated, the moneyed people, the government officials, the lawyers, doctors, and teachers, as well as the Buddhist monks and law enforcement authorities.
Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge henchmen systematically murdered close to two million people from 1976 to 1978 that he believed were enemies of the state. He got rid of them to establish agrarian socialism. When the Vietnamese put an end to his regime in 1978, Pol Pot went underground and continued fighting for his lost cause until natural death claimed him.
Through the country’s numerous 12-century-old temples and ruins in Siem Reap and the presence of thousands of skulls and bones that the current government maintains in Phnom Penh for the world to see and to have a glimpse of the unfathomable brutalities inflicted on the Khmer people by its wickedest ruler, Cambodia has risen and continues to rise from its darkest past making use of the best and the worst of its historical experiences to turn the country into one of the best tourist destinations in the world today.
