With about 252,000 residents, Aachen ranks as the 27th largest city in Germany and the 13th largest in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Aachen is situated at the northern base of the Eifel Mountains and the High Fens. It is the only larger German city in the Meuse drainage basin, along with Mönchengladbach, and is situated on the Wurm River, a tributary of the Rur. Located roughly 61 km (38 mi) west of Cologne and Bonn, it is the largest city in Western Germany and shares a straight border with Belgium to the southwest and the Netherlands to the northwest. Within the boundaries of Aachen is the Vaalserberg, the highest peak in the European Netherlands, which features a three-country point at its summit.
