Our 200 year old REMOTE COTTAGE dream – Questions have been ANSWERED!
Back in September we traveled over to Ireland chasing a dream of buying a remote Cottage after over 3 years traveling in our camper van a simple life Off the Grid surrounded by nothing but nature is something we’ve learned we love we sold our house in the busy southeast of England packed up moved
Into our van fulltime and was on a quest to realize our Dream luckily we instantly fell for Ireland it has everything we love great Coastline beautiful Forest friendly locals and most importantly an abundance of Nature and the perfect climate to accommodate it the search for for a remote Cottage
Was on we looked at quite a few of all different shapes States and sizes and came to the decision we definitely wanted a project we found the perfect one um we would like to put an offer in please the offer is in and after a t
Bidding Moore no I don’t want to get into a biding War oh my God yeah we’re in a bidding war the cottage was ours but with buying anything that’s over 200 years old there were going to be some problems and so started the long process of survey after
Survey to see if this particular dream was even feasible for us this week we have the answer not just to that but to some of your questions too safe to say 2024 is going to get interesting is it is not cowed Look oh God has bought off the shop see many bags a few do have nothing to eat you anything to eat yet how how will you cope nice Ling the what you bought half the tesos oh I just b a few little yeah few little bits how you D Doesn’t all fit does it we just got to do something for ranging that’s all I don’t know what you’re going to do when you get to the snack cupboard of all this extra crap you got in now we’ve been we’ve been reducing the snack cupboard down we’ll be fine with that
Welcome back folks Emily has just been to do our Christmas shopping the final shop before Christmas and she’s bought all kinds of crap back with you it’s needed crap it’s needed crap and when she says reduce the snack cupboard down it’s like a set of scows as the snack
Cupboard goes down down the belly fills up and then you just have to keep that balance going up and down so that we’ve got enough space for the Christmas crap but we are going to update you on the cottage I know you’ve all been waiting
We are literally at the very end of the week now Christmas is in what two days three days two or three days I don’t know when it is but we have finally finally made a decision got all the information we need on the cottage so we are going ahead with the purchase I
Won’t go into so much detail because it won’t make a lot of sense till you’ve seen it we still can’t show you the cottage cuz believe it or not with the 1 second a half a second little tiny snapshot that we put in a few videos back you wouldn’t believe the amount of
People that have gone to extra lengths to find out where we’re going to be moving to and then sending us the address like it’s some sort of achievement it’s a little scary and unnerving anyway we had to have some additional surveys done um one of the
Things that we really wanted to do when we bought this renovation project was make sure we had a good roof now we’re not too fussed about having to do walls floors all that kind of thing but we wanted to be at least dried in and we
Wanted to have a bathroom hang on suers having a sh shy got it in the tray is she not no she missed the tray yeah she’s on the ledge happy Christmas there’s her present to you for God’s sake oh stinks honestly I don’t know what it is about cats poo but oh it’s
Horrendous and then she goes crazy look at [Laughter] her yes Sumer nobody wants to be with your smile sorry about that what was that what was I saying I don’t even know what I was saying now flipping stinks if you are considering a cat in a van then uh yeah this is the biggest problem is
They need a litter tray and uh it stinks and then she goes bat crazy straight afterwards she’s going to come back Coming anyway right Cottage what was I saying yes we wanted to have a roof so that when we’re working on this inside at least we’re dried in and we’re not looking at a full replacement roof because everything else is going to cost a lot of money so we had the surveys
Done it bought up some stuff we was expecting some stuff we wasn’t expecting had additional surveys done in the roof for the dry wet rot wood worm etc etc etc and there is some so got quotes for have all that done and we have been renegotiating on the price the purchase
Price of the property and I can finally say that we’ve managed to haggle it down to a price that we’re very happy to be paying uh so we are going ahead with the purchase it’s just going to be a bit delayed isn’t it it will be probably
February time now that we get the keys fingers crossed it’s now Sol solicitor stage and we know all too well that that can slow everything down but we’re very excited aren’t we we are yes I can’t cannot wait and I keep saying like January but Louise keeps saying February
So I’m just going to have my head January and we’re going to go with that it won’t be January we’ve been holding the process up with all the extra surveys so the sers haven’t even started their bit so um yeah I think February possibly even March might might be might
Be when it goes through but we will be pushing now to get it through but with Christmas it’s just that’s it it’s all hold B but today today we are baking the cat’s still going mental this is going all wrong we are baking today when I say
We are baking that’s the Royal Way Emily’s going to be baking uh Christmas things and we are going to answer the remaining questions now that we definitely know we’re getting Cottage about our move to Island our Cottage renovation plans and all kinds of stuff like that so don’t bake that into
The cakes will you that’s yours they’re going to be your sausage rolls let’s get baking oh got Smarties in there I forgot about Bing s Louise did you just put one in your pocket for later no it’s um I just washed my sink out and it when into the
Sink so just Glide it off I just have one now cuz I haven’t had nothing to eat Today where’s rolling pin in the garage why are we not going to the garage because it’s absolutely blowing a gall outside and the doors can’t be trusted not to fly off the handle so and what’s the other reason the garage is look you don’t need to kick tling people
There we are parked I don’t know if you can see we are parked right next to the coast so the uh the conditions are murky they are murky yeah but you know what oh Domino’s like pasta salt is doing Well what are you doing making a bit of cheese not done yet the you can grape more now put up one pie I made one sliver okay you ready for your first question go for it your last home was quite contemporary will you go for the same Decor or go more traditional in
Your cottage we’re going to go more traditional Cottage than than contemporary although I do like some of the the metal stuff I never think like for the for the lights and stuff but like uh steampunky like steam puny expose light bulbs and all that yes yeah
I don’t know how that’s going to fit though we’ll make it work yeah we definitely it’s a traditional Irish Cottage so we want to keep it as traditional looking as we possibly can but with a kind of slightly modern feel I would say definitely traditional are
You going to be staying in the cottage during your renovation oh do you know what we go back and forth back and forth keep changing our mind what we’re going to do and Cent plan is we’re going to do it room by room we’re going to stay in
The van but use the communal room and the B and the bathroom but who knows until we actually get there and we start taking stuff down I don’t know I can’t say because yeah it changes all of the time that’ll be the that’ll be the dictator the decider once we start
Ripping off the plaster Bol how bad the damp is Will dictate whether we can use the cottage or if we’ll just go full hog and do it all in one hit I’m hoping for a little bit of like living and doing it room by room room by room yeah I reckon
Lou is going to be too excited though and she’s just going to go full hog and I’m going to come come in after work one day and all the plasta balls going to be down everywhere I be like um that will 100% happen managing my own Expectations don’t think Mary Berry does it quite like that I’m having to improvise Louise everything’s in the garage that why we got ready to roll instead of homemade face cre it is yeah cuz I’ve got nothing nothing look I’m using hands Emily is doing cheese straws for our first bit of Christmas baking Believe It or Not mint pie sausage rolls aren’t top of our list are they it’s cheese straws cheese straws for the win right next question what will you do if you find a we Cottage in Scotland we bought our
Earlier this year and we are loving it we had well we was looking in Scotland wasn’t we we’ve been looking the whole time but we just couldn’t find anything that made us mortgage free did it yeah there was ‘s a lot more expensive in Scotland and a lot of the places were
Like that were cheaper were in the the severe mid zones and we just didn’t want that did we no plus when we got to irand cuz a lot of you remember we was going to spend a lot longer looking but um we just fell in love with Island didn’t we
It’s just such an amazing beautifully stunning place that yeah it just stole our hearts is it yes and the people are amazing not to say that the Scottish aren’t but there was just something about Island that Drew us to it wasn’t it what nice luxuries are you going to
Build into the cottage after Christmas well it won’t be after Christmas after Christmas we’ll just be rebuilding it but then once eventually what nice luxuries do you think you want um I want fireplace fireplace or a log fire a log fire a log fire that’s it a log fire and
I’ve seen them on Pinterest I’ve been pinning stuff all over the place Louise so you be busy me nice log fire believe it or not I want a nice spacious kitchen and I know I don’t use it but I don’t I want a house where we can sort of live
In the kitchen during the day and then just go to the the Cozy living room at night so it’s a nice open livable kitchen that would be nice so that’s like two of the main goals and then there’ll be lots of additional bits as the as it progresses I would think uh
When we can finally afford all that free standing bath freestanding bath freestanding bath which is going to be a struggle but I’ll get you freestanding bath how long will it be before you have Irish accents and start using our phrases like Grand crack Etc Grand crack
Those two words are in this in the order that they are there I like it of course you do Louise just like picks accents up straight away and I don’t know why but you’ll be there for like a week and you’ll just start having the accent I
Don’t even have to live there I just need to work with someone from the north for a few days and I’m like why man oh God I’m sorry I apologize just now but yeah I I think our deep Southeastern accents are probably a bit common and bit strong for picking up the accent
Fully although if you get an Irish accent I will fully support it I bet you will saage DRS yes Sal Dr just wondered if either of you have Irish ancestry I don’t know of any in my family but Louise does yes so I have a great grandparent or great great
Grandparent yes uh from County wford is the place and the surname is Maloney Maloney so yes there is Irish An ancestry I’m sure we’ll look more into it um once we live out there and we can do a deep dive into our heritage that would be quite cool actually won’t it
Yeah I reckon so cuz my dad’s side he was adopted so I don’t know about on my dad’s side but I’m sure you’ve got something in there I hope So And they look good they do indeed they’re done to my standard Louise likes them a little bit less done but I’m the baker yeah and there’s probably quite a lot of cheese in there as well there if they’re your standard oh yeah do you like a bit of cheddar oh Cheddar’s The
Way Forward uh next question is there anything unusual you want to build into your new home so for me I want to build one of those you know there like wood fired bars outside where you have a wood fire underneath and then metal B and that’d be quite cool actually yeah have
You got any unusual things I don’t I’m just playing on Bor and I just like it nice and simple we don’t have to bake much cuz there’s only two of us is there yeah it’s nice just a little bit of baking and I wish I was a little bit more
Prepared though although I don’t know if you saw how many cheese straws went in the oven and how many are left already they’re tasty I can’t help it I’m trying to save them because I want to watch a little Christmas movie later and has some sausage R and cheese straw
So no more no more Louise good they’re best when they’re War cheers buddy AJ enjoys baking day as well do he oh he does and clean up crew just put this ball away now you cannot just put that bowl away um the next question when you move here to Ireland would you think
Of having a weekend or even a day camper van Meetup with your Irish and I’ve deleted the rest of that question but I assume it’s your Irish subscribers yeah I think so I think we should do it you know cuz so many people would like to
Like all come together not just to see us but to like all get together I think it would be nice don’t you yeah I think it’ be brilliant to have meet up over in island with all the for the Irish crack for the Irish crack yes let’s let’s do it let’s do it
At some point next year what you done yeah but this one was just calling me um right next question would you consider living in Northern Ireland where there is remote areas where you are still in the UK yes but again we was looking on the internet and
Trying to find some places but there wasn’t any coming up within our budget was there no and we did really enjoy Northern Island it was lovely absolutely stunning but um yeah there just wasn’t a how like I said we fell in love with the particular County that we’re going to be
Living in and even if a cheap house came up in Northern Ireland Scotland France Port anywhere now we’d still want to be where we’re buying our house would we yeah we found we found the One Louise is just setting the old projector up for a little Christmas movie night and snacks we’re going to do the next question which is better suited for her anyway assuming the sale goes through can you describe the phases of construction project one project 2 Etc where will you live on the property
While construction is underway we’ve already said we’re going to live between the van and the cottage probably in the van for the start uh project number one will definitely be Emily’s office and Emily’s office is going to be in one of the out buildings which will be a great
Practice project for me so I can learn how to render and plaster and all that kind of thing before we get onto the house uh and then everything else is subject to change I think what we need to do is go and spend some time living
There would you say on the land just to figure out you know best I mean we’ve got plans but we might want to change how we use the space once we’ve actually been there for a period of time so yeah definitely Emily’s office and the clear out would definitely be project one and
Then yeah maybe the gym so that in the winter time we’ve got somewhere to spend yeah to get fit to get out the van as well and not get cooped up so yeah office gym clear out and then the rest subject to funds money time weather materials so yeah we’ll Safe inside a snowflake like the one on your sleeve there happened a story you must see to believe this is your perfect evening isn’t it oh I love a little snack like food type of stuff don’t know if you L know is but for those those of
You that are asking still not out of the box you got three days I’ve got time and then I’m going to be ยฃ1 richer right we got two more questions left that’s it if you hadn’t found your home in Ireland where else was you thinking of moving to
North umberland yes we do we do really love North umand but the problem with North umand for us is for the money that we’re spending on what we’re buying an irland well for the money we’re spending on what we buy an island we can’t get anything except for two up two down
Terrace right in the middle of a busy town so to get what we’re getting we’d have to spend four times as much with a project that’s a complete build from start to finish so it just wasn’t feasible and I will say when we drove back from Scotland and we drove through
North umland it’s been about what s years since we liveed here yeah the traffic has increased massively hasn’t it so I’m kind of glad that nothing in Northland cuz if something in Northland had come up before we looked in Ireland we probably would have jumped on it but
Like we said earlier we just fell in love with um Ireland didn’t we we did yeah it’s it’s just an amazing place I would have gone anywhere to be honest uh south of France French out Scandinavia would have been amazing but logistically we can’t do Scandinavia since brexit and
You just like we’ve discussed before you just want to be well it’s familiar island although it’s different it’s familiar isn’t it yeah it’s very like a home from home it just feels right being there yes so that is our list of places we may have considered basically North
Umberland are you worried about finding another perfect house elsewhere after buying in the first couple you looked at no because again this isn’t the first couple that we’ve looked at we’ve been looking for nearly a year now so over a year so I’ve wanted to put our house on
The market for over 3 years so I’ve been watching the properties for about three years you’ve been invested for about a year haven’t you yes yeah so although we didn’t tell you till August we put the proper on the market right at the beginning of this year so like 12 months
Ago so we were propably looking them w we every single week yeah um and then with the Irish homes like we showed you maybe six or seven but we looked at a lot more there was a lot that we got to and there was instant n there was a lot
We got to and we couldn’t film and there was hundreds that we wanted to look at which were already sold so we looked at a lot and like we said for our but everyone’s priorities are different so for us we wanted to be mortgage free we didn’t want to have any neighbors and
You wanted a house that you could see yourself living in and whatnot didn’t you so to fit all of our criteria Island was perfect and then they added bonus of we just loved it when we got there exactly and also what you guys don’t know is that we’ve lived all the way
Down in Cornwall all the way up into the borders of Scotland and loads of places in between so we know the the UK quite well and the different places and areas that we would consider looking in and like living in as well so yeah there’s there’s obviously only so much that we
Can show you and tell you at one any one time but you will love the cottage and the the out buildings everything when you see it cuz another thing everyone’s asking well you should have looked in more countries don’t forget we’ve been traveling constantly now for somewhere
Between 3 and 4 years and not once have we ever got to a country and we’ve both gone yep I would love to live here so there’s been countries that I would live in but never for you is it no no so so we’ve we’ve kind of done our traveling
Around a lot of the places and seen all that previously and there’s been there’s loads of places oh God I’d love to live here but you’re just not been up for it have you so no Island just was for both of us it just ticked all of the boxes
Didn’t it yes so that is all your questions answered I can hear Emily’s stomach rumbling from here I just keep looking out the main reason we wanted to make this video though is to thank all you guys cuz throughout the entire year as per usual you’ve turned up you’ve
Been supportive you’ve been kind um being just absolutely amazing people yes and for those of you that do pop on and watch regularly it does mean the world it does really help this channel doesn’t it it’s been a big year it’s been a stressful year so to know that you guys
Are going to be there no matter what is a massive bonus in it so which want to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year have a good one we hope 2024 is going to be as exciting for you as it is for us it’s going to be um
Emotional there’s going to be Blood Sweat tears drama I’m sure and yeah join us to see us completely up this Cottage reservation why not that’s a that’s a salid point is it yeah so happy New Year guys and we’ll see you in 2024 bye
Our 200 year old REMOTE COTTAGE dream – Questions have been ANSWERED!
We finally get the answer to whether we can go ahead and buy the 200 year old remote cottage in Ireland. After our van life road trip along the wild Atlantic way, and further afield in Ireland, we were really excited to start an off grid project living remotely in Ireland.
We found a cottage we loved, put in an offer, and after a bidding war (which we won) were excited! Next came the surveys, and after picking up multiple problems (of course, its over 200 years old) there were a few more that may lead to huge problems that need rectifying quickly, so it was back to the negotiations…
We finally find out how bad it is and decide if we are willing to take it on, as well as answering some of your questions about our plan for the land and our move to Ireland!
As always, thanks so much for watching and we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a brilliant 2024!

Well done Emily for adapting to what you had to make those delicious sausage rolls and cheese straws. I am so delighted that you have got the cottage and interested in hearing your plans so far. It is going to be a very exciting 2024, and you both have good common sense and realise it will be hard work and a lot of money but of course it will be more than well worth it.
