Leg 2 Day 3 School’s in Session (EP 35)

So basically today we’re trying to get out of the Canary Islands and uh what’s going on is we have a little bit of rain coming our barometric pressure gauge uh gave us a little bit of notice uh we kind of went old school and have one of those and it

Beeps when the uh pressure drops quickly um in a certain amount of time you can set it so um just kind of gives you a heads up so we have a cloud on The Horizon we were going to put up the A2 but we’re putting it off a little bit

Um the wind is taking us more uh West and a little bit more north than we want to go so we’re trying to kind of come down a little bit but we don’t want to put the A2 up until we see what this um this Cloud’s going to do

All together Welcome to our allog together passage series a daily Vlog taking you with us on our maiden voyage from France to Miami we’re on leg two to the the Caribbean let’s do this we just put up the A2 finally the wind’s kind of wonky but uh it’s nice to

Have a big sales Set the what I’m trying to work out is whether to do it if we can do it without a block so the reason I’m wondering that’s not ideal you kind of need another thing here to feed it properly otherwise you might but the reason I’m um thinking that is because let’s say it

Went wrong and we needed to L A box drop like we were saying um in an emergency if you have one of your really nice little blocks uh it might you know that so the sail might be blowing out and that the stck line might come under

Tension and if the stock line comes under tension and we forget to undo it there what I what I wanted the turning point to be ideally is a sacrificial something sacrificial oh so because I have been in a situation where I’ve had to cut that quickly and if that’s not

Sacrificial you’ll end up cutting your sock line and that’s a ball L to like deal with so yeah that’s my thinking so that’s better way longer it a bit more coming so basically what Nikki was trying to help us do is figure out how to put up

And take down the A2 with the least amount of Brute Force possible and this is really helpful because I needed to understand also how to take it down myself in a safe way this is a bit of a summary of where we’re at with the

A2 we’re at about um 156 of true wind speed our speed over ground is um uh we’re going about I don’t know 9 or 10 um Depending see that squalls from the other side headed away away from us and uh yeah just trying to find the right angle for this A2 right now we’re at about 140 basically settling in learning a ton we figured out how to rig the A2 so I could take it down in the event

That Stefan needed me to take it down by myself so we rigged a strob I guess they call it basically what would happen is this white line is attached to the cleat that attaches to the TAC the TAC has a released um piece of Hardware that is

Attached to another line line so if I were to release the cleat the line would go free and the tack would go loose once the tack is loose the sail will depower and I would immediately release the tide blue line of the sock and I would use the winch to pull

The sock down and that’s how I would get the sail down by myself if I had to so just steering a little bit getting feel for it waves are like all over the place but yeah your sir yes yes go for one meter at a time

Okay so so in that instance sein take the take that off okay SE so take out the self tayor like like you’re pulling the fish yeah the the the suit the fish um okay careful watch your witch lot of power another meter slowly yep and one more okay there it goes one more

Meter so we just pulled the A2 down and stefon’s putting it in the sail bag with Nikki and I’ve got Curry going on in here homemade Curry and Kena that’s what we’re having for dinner smells good in here so for once I was on a watch that was entirely

Uneventful and um that’s good that’s the kind of watches you you want at least those are the ones I want so Stefan’s coming on watch we just check the vges um had to reset one of the seawater pumps for the toilet maybe got a little air in it and it’s just been following

Seas the stars are big and beautiful um we had a moon earlier that was lighting up the water which was beautiful but it went away so it dashed away into the Horizon so stefon’s on watch you ready for the Handover of the watch here yeah cut the

Handover and then um yeah we are using the motor a little bit uh to charge the batteries cuz when we uh use the hair dryer for an hour that definitely got the batteries down a bit hopeing we’ll have some sun today it was overcast yesterday too other than that full main full genua

And full on yeah yeah so pumy this state at the moment but um 14 15 knots and we’re doing 85 84 86 okay decent quite good yeah sorry for the background noise um but we’re flying continuously doing 10 104 103 um even suring at

145 in about 22 24 kns so wi and we have two roof in the main two in genua at the 145 in GRE angle just this Bo wants to move so we’re taking advantage of the wind we have because we know later in the passage it’s going to get lighter and Lighter N so we get questions about the lon SE and we were just looking at it and um and the moment we’re doing 15 knots and we’re producing 18 16 17 15 16 13 14 uh 10 so it varies uh um this one is the same thing this is the temperature of the

1C this is the power in wats RPM th000 okay RPM this is the peach 20 amps 14 knots and this is our cabin going between what 12 and 15 knots mhm Nikki is having fun how’s your morning busy and fast and fun and fun smiling so

Is good busy and fast is normally fun huh yeah depends who you ask Blue Sky no sun surfing action and that’s why you buy a neware strong WIS you move light winds you move so last night uh and yesterday we have been learning how to do downwind

Reefing I mentioned that briefly in the other video uh which is an entirely New Concept so Nikki maybe you can tell us why we should be doing that the logic is like last night for example the wind got up to 25 28 knots and we had full sales

Up and what was really nice about being able to wath down wind well several things first of all um we don’t have like flogging sales so it all feels calmer and it’s better for the sales if you can work our how to down wind and secondly um it meant that

We didn’t have to turn into the wind which would have taken our apparent wind from 2527 minus our boat speed so 15ish um our apparent wi would have gone from 15 which is what it was when we were downwind to 35 upwind and that plus a sea state which was would would have

Been Beam on or slightly on the side so to me it’s safer to be able to keep on your course and and refly that yeah um and we’ll try to record it at some point us doing it but we’re mastering it a little bit yeah just take a step back so

We rewigged the uh the down hall line yeah way before we left right before we left so we added those and that was different than what we had been doing before yeah yeah that didn’t come with the bat Niki figured out the way to to

Get this Rak you bought like 100 m of D my line and he got all used went broke on the uh d a lot but anyway it was worth it it was 100% worth it yeah I think what we learned um the first thing is what we have reing hooks and we have

Smaller lines with those reing hooks so the thing that we’ve been practicing and I think we learn is to be generous with the topping lift to raise the boom up so first we ease the preventor we use the preventor so we ease the preventor raise generously the topping

Lift um then we have uh 2 Ines here and we are side by side um so we uh ISE the main uh helion and uh the main comes fairly well down but um so and as we do this uh the person on the other Wich is

Uh pulling on the line with theing h to to try to keep the the main just keeping the spiders but not you know too much pressure on it and uh there’s a little bit but nothing bad and when we need to bring some of the main um towards the

Bottom down we pull uh on the down hold and sometimes we just uh grind it a little bit and so we just gradually do this these steps these the main helard for down hold and and at the same time pull on the um on the reefing hook line

Right and once the reefing hook hooks then we we yeah the good thing is even before we go to the mass for the strp uh we can get the reing uh sorry the the outle line um kind of close to the Mast rig the hook so the main is happy and

Then when all that is done so one person goes to the foot of the MK with the strap and then we take the tension uh on the strap and hes the helier that point again that’s right so what’s a little bit different is normally you bring the

You bring the main heler down you hook the loop at the Mast and then you pull the rafing line and then you do the topping lift at the end I’m I’m being like super generic um but it’s kind of a you’re kind of doing it quickly and um

So with our system and with the hooks in the setup and reing downwind it’s a it’s a uh purposeful but kind of slow maneuver so it’s not super slow but it we’re kind of working in in tand them tand them together to make sure the the main is down properly and we’re reefing

Properly so there’s not a lot of lines flying around it’s not stressful um I certainly it’s not as stressful as going into the wind with all of the lines going everywhere cu the boat the boat yeah so it’s a I would say purposeful very well paced kind of a

Maneuver yeah that’s what I mean it’s going to take us a lot of practice to get it kind of to be second nature but um I think we’ll get a lot of practice on this trip so cool so thanks for teaching us that you welcome G yeah serious stuff I put the

Turning point and forced it South because that’s just we’re not going to play with we’re not going to play that game we’re not pushing hard enough to be able to keep the speeds up God so what did we do we set a wayp point to it to go south yeah the routing

Wanted us to take this Northerly route which seems a little too on the line for us a little too tight um you know it’s like one of those it’s kind of a bit of a gamble like you have to make the window or you you won’t get round the

System that’s when and then we have and then we basically you know go for a swim chill out after you know we got to recover from our huge Christmas dinner we’re going to have so Tuesday Wednesday play with your presents Santa CL yeah I ordered the Whatever video games and eat leftovers

And all sandwiches and sunset watch football and then we’re going to and then like and then we’re going to ramp up for New Year’s Eve and you know the new year is going to start with a bang this is 28 stting to get Winder again wind hurry up that’s the next 24

Hours or 12 18 hours and I know why it wants us to go this way because the wind’s starting to Veer and go more East so that’s why the routing is sending us South only after back I’m go backwards so there’s this like sort of anticyclone building here and this route

Up north is kind of gambling on be able to get around the top of it before it moves Northeast um and if you don’t make it above it before it moves up and you get stuck underneath it you end up in this system where this situation where you

Either you got two tacks up wind one takes you basically towards like New York and into the stronger winds towards the center of the the low the low um or the other kind of essentially takes you almost backwards like down towards South Africa so it’s just like it’s it’s not I

Don’t think it’s a game where we’re playing with the crew we’ve got and the boat we’ve got for what talking about and it’s also so far out yeah so it’s all right ready ready A2 is back up so it’s 13 knots a wind I don’t know if you can see that no we’re going about Eight

Today, Stephane and I go back to sailing school with Nikki and we learn more about making it easier to take down the asymmetrical spinnaker and more on downwind reefing.

Hello! We are Holly and Stephane 🇺🇸🇫🇷

We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52. We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speedtest, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water. Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our YouTube vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel.

  1. The new mix of camera perspectives gives the viewer a more engaging onboard experience compared to the extended talking to camera production style on Leg-1. Liking this more and more.

  2. It would be cool if you reported the 24hour Distnace over ground and/or 24 hour Average speed etc… Either in the video or the description below. Some daily metrics would be cool to share.

  3. That’s a awesome vid. Thanks heaps. Look forward to seeing the reefing. Can I ask do you have speed through water on the instruments? Isn’t that the thing you need to know more than SOG when tweaking your trim? This is great stuff to watch, thanks. Oh, also…. am I wrong but is the Watt’n’sea contributing about 3kw per 24hr? I wonder if that’s worth the drag? Pls forgive my questions…. you guys have way more knowledge than me and Nikki is next level beyond that…. just trying to learn a thing or two from you guys as well as enjoying watching the voyage.

  4. Off from work for the holidays and was looking for the daily update way too early today. Got worried enough to check the tracker. Looks like ya’ll are back in the breeze. None of that 7knt stuff! The A2 with the tweaker looks great and seems to work well for the boat. TWA 139 doing 12knts is fun, fun, fun

  5. Excellent video, thanks Holy. I love having Nikki's comments, she is so clear and practical.
Something that would be nice to see is the Boat speed and wind direction and speed in like an insert with transparent background, so we can see the numbers for longer. I can't remember where I saw that, but I guess you may be able to record the screen of the plotter and edit that info on top of the video? Just a thought.
Thanks again for your videos, really good for us travelling with you from our couch.

  6. Nikki is adding such incredible value. You must be stoked. And Segolene, handling the lines like an old hand! And no more leaks. Stephane is right, these Outremers are outstanding: 15 knots speed in 20 knots winds!!!! Amazing performance.

  7. what a fantastic journey you're taking us on (with you), looking forward to seeing more downwind reefing and Nikki teaching us all more in a week than we'd learn on our own in a year 🙂

  8. Nikki is a star! Cool head and great sense of fun. What a great captain to be teaching you how to get the best out of your boat whilst keeping it controlled and safe.

  9. Looks like you are getting some great tips from Nikki. Will be interesting to see the downwind reefing vid. I've done a few of those (through need rather than well planned I might add 🙄), do you use the traveller to get the wind aft of the main?
