Be welcomed by watching this next episode. In this one, we will ascent on a Alpine three-thousander. It will be peak Ankogel and we will use the Hannoverhaus hut for a safe and comfortable ascent. We start at the end of the village of Mallnitz in the district of Špitál na Dráva in Austrian Carinthia.

There is a large free parking lot. Right next to it is the lower station of the cable car, which can take you up from 1,320 to 2,630 meters above sea level in two stages. Now we only admire it and use it for the descent tomorrow.

The route we chose leads through the Seebachtal valley around the Stappitzer See lake. The mountains here are so steep that all the streams that feed the Seebach stream flow into the valley like waterfalls. To the Schwussnerhütte, it is about an hour from the parking lot.

We started around noon and it will take us roughly 7 hours to reach today’s destination. The elevation gain is only slight at first, the real ascent begins after the hut. One kilometer of altitude must be climbed for one kilometer of length. Ankogel is a mountain in the High Tauern mountain range in Austria.

It gives its name to a group of hills in the eastern part of this range. The highest peak of this group is the Hochalmspitze. The border of the federal states of Carinthia and Salzburg passes through Ankogel.

The route runs along a stream and a small forested section is a real escape from the sun in the summer. There are several springs on the route, which we used for refreshment and to replenish drinking water. It is the second half of August and we went expresively synchonised with the weather.

After this steep start, the path continues via a traverse to the Hannoverhaus hut, and you have to climb another 350 meters on it. The view is mainly to the valley from where we started. There is also a shorter route to the cottage, under the cable car,

Or you can take it and save energy for the next day. The cottage is located on the Tauernhöhenweg alpine route and belongs to the German Alpine Association. It is open from mid-June to the end of September and in winter from mid-December to the end of March.

It is built at an altitude of 2565 meters above sea level and you will find a refuge in it that can sleep up to 60 overnight guests. There are separate toilets and hot water showers with a coin machine on the floors. Paťo and Veronika took care of the excellent kitchen,

But that changed at the end of the 2023 summer season, and Niklas, the new lodger and building manager, will be preparing goodies for you. The cottage provides meals throughout the day. In addition to the breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, vegetarians, vegans and people with intolerances will also find something to suit them .

When the hut is out of operation, a winter room with three beds, a kitchen and a toilet is available. The cottage is electrified and has drinkable water. It is supplied by cable car and helicopter. From the summer terrace, under favorable conditions, you can observe sunrises and sunsets, or the night sky.

The first cottage was built a little lower already in 1888. Already in the first year it had to be rebuilt and expanded. The second version was opened on a higher place in 1911. The chemist, professor at the veterinary school

And long-time chairman of the Hanover section of the Alpine Association – Johann Arnold – was responsible for its construction. The hill under which the cottage stood was renamed Arnoldhöhe in his honor and there is a small mausoleum with his ashes.

The current hut, which is again built below, is the third version opened in 2014. Immediately after breakfast, we set off in the direction of Ankogel. We follow the route we took to the cottage the day before. We turn left from the route past the small Lassacher Kees glacier.

In one place, we cross it to the saddle. From there, there is a steeper climb up the rocks to Malý Ankogel. Here you can put down a heavier rucksack and continue to the top lighter. We made one of the two backpacks and we alternated that one.

We left the second rucksack at the cottage in the drying room. You have to be very careful on this last section, it is steep and exposed. Every trip or fall can end tragically. You have to follow the signs carefully and proceed slowly. It is the last 150 height meters to the top.

From the top you can see the Hochalmspitze, the Kleinelendkees glacier, the Plessnitzsee glacial lake and the Maresenspitz mountain. In good weather you can see Hocharn, Sonnblick, Wiesbachhorn and Grossglockner. Ankogel is one of the first officially climbed and documented three-thousanders of the Eastern Alps.

The route also leads here through more demanding terrain along the Kleinelendkees glacier from Osnabruckerhütte. In any case, if you go here, have adequate equipment, experience and alpine insurance. From the top, we return by the same route back to the cottage. We will use the cable car to descend to the valley.

We need to hurry because we want to catch the train that will take us to the other side of the Alpine ridge. It traffics every hour, and whether you’re on foot, by bike or by car, it will transport you safely and shorten your transit time.

Výstup na jednu z prvých oficiálne zdolaných trojtisícoviek vo Východných Alpách. Z Mallnitz prejdeme dolinou Seebachtal k Schwussnerhütte, potom strmo hore a postupne traverzom k chate Hannoverhaus. Odtiaľ na druhý deň vystúpime na vrchol.
