New Year’s Eve – Palma de Mallorca – 31st December 2023

Well it’s the 31st of December it’s New Year’s Eve it’s 2023 soon be 2024 and uh we’re just outside the cathedral late it’s late it’s 10 11 at night and uh there’s lots of other people around here a few fireworks going off around us and uh

We’re going to head to pla Court which is where the main celebration in Palmer is held so let’s get going yeah just give us an extra opportunity to see the lights as well and you’ll see people um dressed up for the occasion so just to the right here this is the

Cathedral and we’re going to go past all the government buildings until we get to the town hall which is pla Court 10 past 11 now and uh the celebration’s in pla qut are due to start at uh about half 11 and then go on past midnight obviously don’t think we’ll stay that

Long but uh we come here just to see the crowds and to see the new year in to gather with uh several thousand other people I think it’s going to be a business night hope tell there there’s a lot of people uh congregating around the cathedral and

Uh quite a few in the park dear but uh I don’t think there’s anything planned for either of those he so well not officially anyway you get some people who will setting off our Fireworks I put a coat on this evening cuz I thought it might be a bit cold it’s it’s actually quite warm isn’t it it’s bad quite mild earlier on today we were down in magal and there was quite a strong wind which made it feel Cold uh the wind’s dropped down now and

It’s relatively calm a smell of gunpowder in the air smell of [Applause] sulfur people here with preferential Parking lot of the roads will be cut off around here Now they do have um limited you’re not allowed to drive in these parts unless you have permission so be careful cuz you get fined if you accidentally go Astray and the noise is uh getting louder and louder by each foot full We drove in there there was a fire engine just in front of us I don’t know if that’s the one but there’s one I can see in front of us now police car blocking the road and uh they’ve got all of the emergency services on Hand get a coffee Here it’s a fire engine it’s the bomberos does always amuse me when I see the sign here It looks as though the music started Already You [Applause] You [Applause] It’s just about quarter 11 and uh it’s really quite busy here we’ve still got about 40 minutes or so to go so we’re just going to have a little wander around uh on the outskirts of the crowd so this is pla cour with all the lights up

There we’re just going to have a little walk around it’s a little bit quieter bars around this area are open and they seem to be doing a a good trade So just while we’re waiting for the hands to reach 12 just to look around some of the the streets and uh the Lights a bit quiet around this area and all the shops are now Closed Our backup Generators That sh no official fireworks uh tonight just the uh disco and whatever comedy sort of a they might have on the main thing we’re going to be here for is just the countdown the champagne sh I’m just not looking forward to that and then uh we haven’t brought any

Grapes with me cuz I can’t old grapes and keep the video on what at midnight uh the tradition here is of each gong of the Bell you take a grape of good luck for 2024 just going to quite of pretty there see everybody’s h going in the opposite direction cuz we

Going in the wrong direction everyone is heading towards pla Court we’re heading towards pla mayor simply because the lights are really pretty in May all the stools I’m guessing all shut down closed up as they should be Tuxedos Foree [Applause] See the number of people heading towards PA court going to be difficult to get in there later On very good very nice and this is plat May well we just uh we’ve just been in pla May and walk down towards Papa court with prongs of other people it’s really really as busy around here now and uh the police have put a barrier across the road stopping people get into pla um it’s probably getting a little

Bit too of those they directed them to to go in a different direction and uh well we’ll see what happens we’ve actually found ourselves art bench so um we’re just having a little sit and we’re going to wait for it cuz there’s another 20 minutes or so to wait before

Anything’s going to happen really so we may as well sit it out like everybody else sort themselves out it’s all getting pretty crazy around here Do and still the people keep coming they keep coming into pla or attempting to get into pla Court there’s so many people trying to get into PL court and they’re going to be sard I’m just making my way around the back of the uh the hotel cappuccino hotel and

This is where the television are obviously based we’ve got the equipment all set up here monitoring from here ready out I thought they put this spread of food on for me but uh I’m guessing it’s for the film crew there’s a load of cheese and all sorts of things out

There bit of a buffet I’ve left Anita um sitting on a park bench this is one of the nice hotels this is the cappuccino hotel and uh they’ve been having their party here and the police are stopping anyone getting any closer to at the court than [Applause] here Here people Spee [Applause] [Applause] nice get your hands [Applause] [Applause] here [Applause] oh [Applause] spee [Applause] [Applause] fore [Applause] Ni [Applause] [Applause] I [Applause] [Applause] like f [Applause] [Applause] my w Well Happy New Year everyone and uh the fun the noise and the crowds of people are going to go on and on and on into the early hours but that’s not our sort of thing so uh we like a few hundred others are actually going to head head

Home it’s fun it’s just once a year I don’t really like CL crowds particularly crowds of that vastness uh but once a year I’ll put up with it we should actually go by the cathedral again loads of champagne clocks are being popped fireworks have gone [Applause] off that’s just from somebody’s apartment

It’s not an official fir work display to somebody who’s got a roof Terrace having the part good place to be in those bit like being at real new yor isn’t it on Match dat I’m not going that way I’m going to go this way up some steps the fireworks are continuing from this Apartment Don’t Well it’s been an adventure coming into Palmer today and uh Happy New Year Happy New Year to everyone and we’ve had a an interesting time didn’t get to see exactly what we wanted to see but um it was just that’s just that isn’t it it’s

New Year it’s what it is it’s uh crowds and lots of people lots of noise and people having a good time we’re outside the cathedral now and we’re going to find our way home so thanks very much for watching and look forward to seeing

With no official celebrations for the past three years, Palma was in the mood to party. Thousands of people descended on Plaza Cort for the traditional countdown to the new Year, not see since 2019.
We arrived early, but so did many more so the Plaza was packed. The police took precautions by restricting access from certain points.
As the hour struck the corks started to pop and to 12 grapes of good luck were devoured.
We were home in time to see Rick Astley welcome in the New Year and the fireworks from the Thames in London.
