Leg 2 Day 10 On Watch with Holly (EP 42)

H Come Come [Applause] Oh [Applause] These bell peppers are a little sad so it’s better to put them inside something I think yeah is it Burger night Burger night Che it out look at those patties mhm you the chef Ando we’re currently sailing with the code 65 here’s the Little Dot which is where the wind is coming

From you can see there 65 um pretty good on our poers so far and the wind is about 15 knots averaging apparent wind um speet overground about 10 it’s a little bumpy so that’s what that banging is this is what it’s like sitting at night watch in the very early Dawn I’m just chilling eating an orange which looks red this light probably I can turn that off I was thinking how Soul cleansing this last couple of days have

Been and remembering I don’t know 15 years ago 14 years ago when Stefan introduced sailing to me what I liked about it was it cleared my mind like you had to be entirely focused on the present moment and you know for me that was something that has always been a

Challenge um with kids and work and everything it’s easy to kind of just rush through um it’s easy to rush through life and I spent a lot of time in yoga classes and meditation Studios trying to sort of be in the moment and enjoy that that moment as it’s

Happening but nothing has been even close to what I’ve been sort of experiencing in the last couple of days and I’m not sure if it’s the ocean that just puts things in perspective or the time just to have the time to focus on what’s going on in that moment

Um but everything or the fact that maybe just my world’s so small um it’s been incredible incredible and soul cleansing and again I don’t know if it’s the sailing or the water or the passage or what but I think we all maybe need a little bit more of that in our lives at

Least I do this is a really dumb example but um I typically hate to cook my rule is it can’t take longer to cook it than to eat it however I have found cooking to be very joyful and fulfilling on this trip and I think maybe again just having the time to

Think about it and to not be in a hurry and to know that it brings Joy to the rest of the crew it’s incredibly fulfilling it sounds so stupid but um I just never really enjoyed it before cuz I just felt like it was something I had to do and

Rush to get done you know before rushing off to this or you know um running kids off to practice or whatever but yeah I can see why people maybe take up gardening but sailing’s fun too so you can tell we have a racer on board cuz she’s figured out how to set

Up the Nemesis into the Waypoint mode so it looks like um ETA to our next way point she set that up it’s pretty cool we don’t know how to use a lot of these views yet in this little guy but it’s super fun we were doing the life jacket

Briefing yesterday it was more like life jacket policy for the boat and one of the things I wanted to share and I know a lot of people are going to have strong opinions about this but I’m just going to share the information is that um these life jackets are really useless unless you

Use the crotch strap and I don’t know if it’s a cultural thing or what uh in Europe you see everybody wearing the crotch strap um but in the US I think it’s a mixed bag I don’t know what what that’s about but um basically you need to have your life

Best tight so I tightened mine um which is good cuz it was kind of loose before um here so now it’s tight number one um it has a double harness so I can clip in and clip out of where I need to be and then it has the the

Strap um so what happens is if you fall overboard this inflates and it’ll rise up and if it rises up too far it can actually inflate above your head which means it would be holding your head underwater so the crotch strap helps keep it in place so when it inflates it inflates

Around your neck so that’s the purpose of a crotch strap so I wear mine religiously look at this beautiful beautiful clouds Sunrise oh the other thing we’ve installed in our black jackets is a quick release um here what that does is in the event we fall overboard and are harnessed to

The boat but are somehow struggling um to breathe and you would want to do this as a last Stitch effort obviously before you pass out is to pull the quick release and it releases the harness which means you’re not any longer Tethered to the boat which has its own set of

Issues um but you’d have to prioritize breathing over big attached kind of a morbid thought but I just wanted to add That [Applause] [Applause] it’s a little ominous but we’re moving in an opposite direction than it’s moving a little bit of the good news is yesterday we had a storm tactics conversation we talked about a lot of things but um we talked mostly about squalls cuz that’s what we’re going to

See a lot of and what Nikki said is a lot of people try to game the squalls to try to take advantage of some of the uh winds within them and she said she just avoids them like you would avoid a ship um just steer clear out of out of the

Way and it reduces risks on many levels and um she said nine times out of 10 if people are trying to game fall and get the advantage of the wind speed it never quite works out cuz you get stuck in the middle where there’s no wind for a while

And it cancels out any speed gains you would make so I thought that was pretty interesting so avoid squalls like their ships tip of the day this is our autopilot we’ve named him George I don’t exactly know why it might be because George just sounds like a

Dependable name I’ve never really met a George that wasn’t reliable so it seemed seemed like a good name for an autopilot what’s going on with these weather clouds uh well it’s more overcast um I think it’s probably because is where there is a low pressure system that is not low super

Low but because the typically the high pressure has been North Northeast and West than usual so it creates that space between the high pressures to you have kind of this high pressure that is like Way West and North you have another one and that creates the wind spins this way the wind spins

This way so you have this little um space is being created for some low pressures and then you have this weird system so so that’s what we see here um we’re here uh this little low pressure is here uh that explains the the winds we’re getting because the high pressure

Is further to the to the east and north and so instead of getting those straight winds this way we’re kind of getting the winds coming 120 cuz it’s moved it’s moved that way and North so we’re trying to sell Southwest this thing is going to leave here for another 24 48

Hours and then he kind of moves up a little bit we move down and I think it just yeah it weakens so the end of the trip after Sunday is it’s going to be A2 Jing all the way to martinque if we have stronger winds we’ll try the uh symmetry the S4 it’s

Been uh the S4 has been just a passenger the onp dead weight on so far on this trip we need uh we have we haven’t sail it yet Nikki sell it on a newon m55 um she says it’s great but you need that 15 plus wind uh otherwise the boat

Accelerates and U the Spiner kind of collapses a little bit so so we need if we find those conditions where we have uh at least uh yeah 15 plus then we’ll we’ll try it maybe a little bit more than 15 18 20 that be the plan so and if

Even if we don’t have the right conditions we’ll try just to try take some pictures see what it looks like yeah crispy still we’re getting closer uh we we yesterday we passed uh what we had kind of a little bit of a halfway party maybe we continue today but we’re getting closer

To to the Thousand yeah maybe after today maybe tomorrow we’ll be uh under a thousand woohoo and if we look at speed overground over the past like right now the past hour has been 10 knots if we look for the past uh I don’t know 5 hours

10.2 the past 10 hours 10 knots so we’ve been uh doing um pretty good averages yeah 10 knots in 10 hours average yeah going in one uh 120 through wind app parent uh yeah 120 we’ve had uh 15 this not like uh 14 15 we apparent win about 12 uh froming

On port side uh 78° 80° boat speed around 10 and uh yeah 24ish so put 65 so that’s pretty good that means over the 10 last 10 hours 100 Nal miles so if we continue this way we we’ll definitely uh maybe over the past 24 hours we’ve been at over 200

Probably uh we’ll see we do some calculations later but suspect yeah all day today is going to be more of that so we’ll definitely do a 200 M plus day so your watch doesn’t start for another hour so I miss you buddy a you miss me just

So sweet check on you making sure always is good yeah thank you for checking on me yeah all is good it was a good Sunrise I I oh

Hello! We are Holly and Stephane 🇺🇸🇫🇷

We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52. We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speedtest, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water. Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our YouTube vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel.

  1. Early! Nice treat. Funny about the life vests, and all the 'other' 3 were forward changing a bouncy sail without a sight of a life vest… i guess it's a constant battle.

  2. THANK YOU & QUESTION: Thanks for the details on your polars and respective sail configurations, and video of how you’re deploying the sails. Incredibly helpful!
QUESTION: with regards to speed Could you please step thru the difference between progress and performance using your data display: You consistently use SOG to your polars, which I think is is a mismatch.
    1. SOG (x time) is a measure of progress on your voyage, or more precisely, progress as measured by distance over ground, rather than distance towards next waypoint or destination.
    2. STW (speed thru water) is a measure of *performance*, which is the correct data to use against polars.
Would love to hear your most excellent explanation paired with Holly’s GREAT video & editing illustrating these points (if you think I’m hitting the right points)
Cheers. Absolutely LOVE your daily passage log, and I’m so grateful for your hard work required to deliver this. Congratulations on finding a new “niche” in sailing vlogs that didn’t exist! So happy for you guys and your new adventures… 😊

  3. About feeling zen a boat. First, the fact that you are OUTSIDE (even when you are in the saloon) exposed to the wind and Sun is very relaxing. A day like that gets you tired, but GOOD tired. Second, you don't get the 'land' noises (the boat noises kind of become 'white noise'). Third the boat's motion (once you get your sea legs) is soothing.

Being on a boat at sea greatly amplifies the perception on how you FEEL. And it can go both ways. When you feel good, you feel REALLY good. When you feel bad, you feel REALLY bad. I think that it's purely psychological and not physical. But it sure feels real.

    Two true stories:
    – A family crossing the North Atlantic from Canada. Their plan was to stop in the Azores (not pushing too hard). They didn't stop because they didn't want their bubble to burst by reaching land. They wanted the magic to continue. They made land in Portugal instead.
    – 4 (male) buddies crossing the North Atlantic from Canada. They were supposed to go straight to France. They stopped in the Azores. They now hated each other and jumped ship.

  4. The name 'George' for autopilots came from aircraft, the origin of that is either referring to the name of the inventor George De Beeson who patented it in the 1930's or the Royal Air Force pilots, during the second world war, who named it after King George VI… Whatever the origin, I agree it's a solid name, especially being English & St. George being our Patron Saint 🙂 I really do need to get out more… 😳😂 Loving the daily vlogs, thank you😃

  6. Holly no matter how many times I sail the moment I switch the engine off sails up and hear the bow wave or the wake wash even on club racing nights that’s the magic moment for me

  7. I really can relate to what you said about cooking. I also have never enjoyed it. But I really can see how it could become a more pleasant task when you have time to focus on it and a hungry audience who really appreciates it.

  8. great to make more people aware of the fact that a lifevest can work against you when the strap is not tied. (and yes its at times uncomfortable) another thing is that one can fall overboard and I strongly advocate for tags in every life vest that set of an alarm. whether its a personal beacon with ais (expensive but adviced) or just a tag that sets off the phone alarms.. It alerts that one has fallen overboard. And if you think of it you are doing 10 kn (308m/minute) if you fall over it takes time that the boat is travelling whilst you are in the water. Time starts to count for hypothermia as well as chance to find the person. each second counts.

Even after knowing that MOB has happened, turn the boat into the wind, drop the sails, it takes at least a minute. (308 meters covered in one mnute at 10 kn). then you need to find the person, but in the dark? How?..light helps, ais or beacon is better

First to realize the person is actually not on board, another 308 meters before the sails are down, then turns the boat and go back and you are in the most positive scenario still 500 meters away from the victim, Falling over board comes with a good chance of hitting head or limbs and its a real emergency. Hence if you can get to a 2 minute timeframe there's a chance on survival. the victim ight not be able to swim.

When the crew only finds out after 5 minutes and then does not know where you are, you are already so far away that chances are very slim. Hence personal beacon, a scrobe light, and obvious never go out of the cockpit at night whitoit telling some one else. (thats my 5 cents worth, not so mucg for you guys but maybe some one reads this and saves a life)

  9. The zen you describe is what we all need. Also I think the sea gives off special ions which makes our bodies the healthiest they can be. At least that's what the sea does for me. Also, I am trying to plan a trip to Miami Boat Show to meet you guys. I work in Nashville and some times the logistics can be tricky with small animals but I o want to try to make it there. Would love to say hello. Safe travels and thank you for sharing the journey with us. Love it!

  10. Holly you really nailed it with the passage making. So glad your are not bored as some folks report. I really enjoy being out at sea on passage sailing (or motoring). Your big super comfortable yacht and fast sog helps too.
This is a great comparison to the GGR & OGR (currently in Auckland layover) races using ‘70 technologies only. I prefer the simplicity but the knowledge factor is too good to miss. (Some OGR boats reported a tough 10 days in Indian/So with NO weather reports !)
Code this and that is great but a screacher and spinnaker are about all most of us can handle!!
Most be great having Nikki sharing all that modern knowledge and skills. Don’t forget to film a down wind reef when you master it!!!!!!
    Cheers Warren

  11. I always wanted to cross The Atlantic & here I am doing it vicariously in fantastic company 🙂 thank you! and yeah, no brainers re the lifejackets and squall dodging !
