I Need Your Help! Where Should I Go in 2024?

Hi I’m fil and I’m on a great Gap here and happy New Year and welcome to 2024 I waited until January the 1st record this so I could genuinely say that and in the spirit of New Year’s videos I’m going to talk about some of my best trips so far

And then I’m going to reveal some plans for 2024 and explain how you can play your part in those future plans so if sending me to the destination of your choice sounds like fun make sure you keep on watching and I’ve also been asked about this piece of art in the

Background and I promised I’d talk about it in the next time I filmed in the lounge so I’ll tell you all about the uh the painting of The Vikings in the background too so my highlights today well I’ve picked out a few highlights and each one has its own reason for

Making the list and my first highlight is from my very first video and it is my very first ever flight in business class now admittedly this was a British Airways club Europe flight so it’s very much European short Hall you know an economy plus rather than business sort

Of flight but it does hold some very dear memories to me it was a great flight and although I don’t need the tear points anymore I do still find myself continually drawn to European business class it is a constant Battle of my head over my heart number two was

The trip at the end of that first business class flight which was in Sicily and it was exciting and terrifying in equal measure I’ve said before that the thought of being a Solo Traveler well it just terrified me but I also know that you know we passed this

Way but once and if I want to fulfill my dreams of travel then you know I just have to get on with it uh once we’ landed I had a longest walk to a well-hidden car High office an hour wait for my high car and then a sphincter

Clenching drive across town to my hotel and although I spent a large part of that trip in a state of constant anxiety I did conquer a number of fears on that trip and also I visited the Roman filla I visited Tamina ortigia the Valley of the temples it’s a beautifully rugged

Island and an amazing place to visit and I have looked at a return trip in July for um tier points uh but the prices have just rocketed since my last visit another highlight was another first and that was flying in a Quantus Long Haul business seat an excellent flight which

Was only from Melbourne to Perth uh and the upgrade cost was only $350 Australian dollars which was under200 at the time now it was my first time in a grown-up business class with a three course meal on a 5-hour flight it was a special experience for sure

I was flying to Perth for another of my passions which is watching Cricket but I also enjoyed a couple of days in the city I went down to freem manle I visited the old convict prison and I had a day at rot Nest Island uh with possibly the cutest animals in the world

Which are called quackers I also went through the first Wing in Heath R Terminal 5 for the first time in 2023 now if you’re not familiar with this then it’s British Airways first class check-in area and lounge and it also has its own dedicated security l it’s available to ba Golden One World

Emerald passengers as well as Ba’s first class passengers and although the lounge isn’t like other first class lounges around the world it is very business class well the first wi does feel really exclusive uh and using the first wi is a key difference between ba silver and

Gold status it’s not a Reason by itself to go the extra mile for gold but it is one of the nicer perks you get as a gold status holder my number one highlight is one I haven’t actually made a video on yet and that was a bucket list trip to

Barbados I flew first class with British Airways to this island paradise it was my first time flying in first class and my first time in the Caribbean the flight was superb with a fabulous cabin crew uh and the video of this flight is imminent so if you’d like to know when

It’s released make sure you subscribe to the channel click the Bell and get a notification on the island I enjoyed some great food down at oyston I walked some amazing beaches and I swam with fishes and turtles uh a quick shout out to a guy called my who I met there who

Helped me find the turtles off Pebble Beach I would not have had the confidence to swim out that far without your help so thanks mate and I do hope we get to do that again someday and in other news I’ve also taken my first business class flights with katar so

That’s coming up too so those are some of my gray Gap year highlights so far with a sneak peek to some upcoming videos but what’s next well as I record this on January the 1st 2024 I have no book trips nothing none nada zil Z and

This is where you come in I’d love to find out what you’d like to see next so if you got a cool idea for a gray Gap year 2024 trip please leave me a comment and if some other people have commented and you see something that you like give

It a thumbs up or give that comment a reply so I can see the most popular ideas so do you have a trip that you’ve taken that you think I should take you know you think I’ll like that or is there somewhere you’d like me to go and

Check out so I can report back is there somewhere you want to go but haven’t quite plucked up the courage let me know in the comments section below I’ll Endeavor to pick some of the suggestions and make videos on them I just hope I don’t end up in a boaty Muk boat face

Situation and if you don’t know what that is I’ll put a link in the comments so that’s the upcoming trips covered I don’t have any yet but what about the videos I want to make for the channel in 2024 well I’d like you help with that too although I’ve started to sort of

Find my feet with making videos I feel the channel strayed away from its original path or more accurately the purpose I had in mind when I started the channel I always intended to make videos that would make your travel that bit easier are sort of helpful hints videos

Like the sisly one and the Bucharest one that were sort of towards the start and then I made a video about gold status with ba and it was a popular video it had more views and more subscribers than any of my other videos and I do think

That’s when I moved away from those sort of destination videos those helpful uh travel planning videos that I was always hoping to make and and I moved towards Point status and flights videos that I’ve sort of published since then and I’m sort of wondering if I should try

And get back to my original idea but I’m not making videos for me and there’s nothing more boring than being dragged into your neighbor’s house and being forced to sit through their holiday slides so I’d like to know what you want to see in 2024 I’m thinking about making

Uh helpful videos about food in Barbados or the hidden gems of the Great Ocean Road is that something you’d enjoy uh also the Royal yach brania in Edinburgh is another Hidden Gem it’s a great day but nobody seems to know it’s there so are those ideas is the YouTube

Equivalent of your boring colleague forcing you to swipe through holiday snaps or are these things you’d really like to watch some feedback from you on this would be really helpful please put your suggestions in the comments because without you well there is no Channel and so before I go and start looking for

Flights for that tearo run I must tell you about this piece of art in the background it’s an it’s an unsigned piece of art that I bought in freemantle which is near Perth in Western Australia I was visiting freemantle prison and it was part of an exhibition by West

Australian prisoners and the prisoners or the artists desire for anonymity is the reason that the piece remains unsigned the artist has used this discarded box as their canvas and I like this it gives it sort of a found art sort of feel and it allows it to stand

Freely so it doesn’t have to be installed on a wall and then viewed as two dimensions and it also means that this piece literally has two sides to it the subject is what I think is quite a playful take on the first Viking attacks on Britain at lindes fan and with this

Bold stencil lettering I don’t know if the artist used a stencil because they wanted this rigid set of stenciled lettering or if they were simply unable to create the lettering style they wanted freehand but regard as the motivation I think the lettering I think it gives it like this military feel uh

For what is essentially a painting of an attack on Britain I could keep talking about this piece and I do actually get a lot of Joy from having it in my lounge uh and just looking at it and but the piece has no real monetary value apart from the

Enjoyment that it brings me it didn’t cost me very much to buy uh but the price that I paid did go directly to the artist so it will hopefully make their time in present a little more comfortable it isn’t the only piece I bought at the exhibition but perhaps

I’ve been talking about um my art in a travel video for quite long enough so before I go and make a cup of te I’ll just say to you please subscribe leave me a comment and thank you for watching and joining me on my gr Gap yet

My Grey Gap Year rolls into 2024 and I need your help! I have nothing booked for 2024 yet and I want you to suggest some awesome trips.

So will you help me?

Watch as I look back on My Grey Gap Year, sharing some of my travel highlights to date, and give you a sneak peek in some videos that are soon to be released.

I also promised that I’d talk about the piece of art, on my bookcase, at the back of the lounge and I do that in this video too.

So thank you for joining me on My Grey Gap Year.
Phil

  1. Happy New Year Phil. Thanks for your excellent content which I have found most useful.
Following on from my 2023 Club World Reward return to Rio with Companion voucher I have just recently bagged with my latest Companion voucher two Club Suite Reward returns to Cape Town in 2024 with 15 days to occupy myself in South Africa. Any thoughts on the extension of the Double Tier points offer from BA Holidays beyond 31/12/24 as to date a paid for long haul Caribbean BA holiday provides most of my tier points to get and keep Silver status.
I like your style of explaining the process of finding and funding Reward flights so a step by step booking of a multi leg Qatar reward flight would be on my wish list for 2024 .

  2. Great video. Ironically for me New Years Day is very significant for me….32 years ago having never been further than Corfu (and a very nervous flyer) driving back from Blackpool decided to visit cousin…. In Tasmania !….3 weeks later was on 4 week trip to Australia ….for the next 8 years travelled round the world 7 times ! ….Places I’d go back and see ? Vancouver/Whistler….. Queenstown/South Island New Zealand……Darwin and coach across to Alice Springs…..India (only ever been to Delhi…..but without doubt such an experience)

  3. Great videos, Phil, and happy new year. Japan long haul….not been but going in 2025. Short haul, try a city break to Valletta, some great sights, and try The Pub, which is a …fantastic pub.

  4. If you have a goal to continue growing the channel, status, avios, tier points and status is the way to go. If your goal is to just travel and report, then going back to your original video plan it is 🙂

  5. A combination of both. Go on an international trip but go through how it was booked, how it helps your status, how people can also find a cheap trip like that with examples. Then show us how the trip went. Whatever you decide, I look forward to it 🙂

  6. Happy new year! I’ve loved the flight reviews and the BA status/points videos too. Keep doing what you’re doing!

I’m not the best person to give advice on travel destinations as I’m just a massive avgeek, so the flights often dictate where I’ll go. If you fancy some fun flights that can make use of your OW status, I recommend:

-Finnair out of T3 (their biz class is fab! They have a regional subsidiary too that use ATRs and E190s
    -Iberia widebodies and CRJs
    – BA (sun-air) dornier 328JET
    – some good lounge crawl opportunities at LAX/JFK etc (not done myself yet)

Thanks for the content, look forward to seeing the next trip reports!!

  7. Phil. Great videos to date. Please do one on a BA Tier Point run to Sofia and include the complete process (finding flights, booking, boarding cards, etc). Agree the Royal Yacht Britannia is a hidden gem and worth a trip to Edinburgh on its own.

  8. Went to Madeira in November & stayed in Old Town Funchal. I questioned why I’d never been before & loved that flew back Xmas day and was wonderful most amazing Xmas lights. I’ll be back very soon.

  9. These should probably be on any bucket list:

Barra (to land on the beach)

Lukla (obviously, and probably quite popular)

    Saint Martin (for Maho Beach)

Flight and lounge blogs are ten-a-penny out there on YouTube. But there aren't many "how to" videos. Things like:

Ease of connections – perhaps showing the route and complexity (or not) of connecting at key airports, plus whether they can be done airside

Using alternative lounges with OneWorld gold – for example, at LAX, if you're travelling on American (even if only doing a short domestic flight) you can walk (airside) to the Tom Bradley and use the Qantas First lounge, which is excellent. Plus you can use Flagship First check-in there, which is amazing. DFW is another example with better lounges which have airside transfers available. And, of course, LHR terminal 3.

How to construct tier point runs is always interesting – detailed notes on the research needed and how you managed to book them, plus a vlog of the run itself.

  10. Happy New Year! Going on the Viking Ship theme you might want to go Moorhead in Minnesota (it's actually next to Fargo in North Dakota) to visit the Hjemkomst Center – bizarrely there's a replica Viking Ship that a guy in the US built in the 80s and his family sailed all the way across the Atlantic. I was in Fargo moving towards my aim of visiting all 50 states and stumbled across this museum and ship. If you are in the US anyway for some reason, definitely worth a few day detour to go up and visit it. Probably not in the winter though…

  11. Hi Phil, nice review of the year. I may be biased (due to family there) but I'd recommend South Africa.. One for the northern hemisphere's colder months, no jet lag (as almost due south) and plenty to see and do, without even going to the globally famous Cape Town or Kruger.

  12. You shouldn't have any issues as a solo traveller, until recently, I was always going places by myself but either solo or with someone has it's perks.

Not sure if it's a good destination but for a different flight experience, something I'd like to do is lcy to billund in Denmark and fly on a dornier 328, it's tiny but looks great and maybe something you could try this year?

  13. Hi Phil. Be good if you could use your nifty spreadsheet skills and start with all the 80 tier point destinations then have a column showing the average cost of each business class return flight then another column detailing convenient departure and arrival times ( I don’t want flights that depart and arrive at ridiculously early or late times on both legs). Finally a column that ranks the ease of public transport to the centre of the main travel destination eg the town – important as I don’t want to hire a car or be faced with a 20 mile taxi journey. You could then compile a list of the top 5 filtered as above. This could form the basis of you doing a travel Vlog of these top 5.

  14. Happy New Year Phil! Looking forward to seeing your trips over 2024. I enjoy your tips on chasing status, the journey experience and your reviews of where you’ve visited. I’m quite new here, so apologies if I’ve missed past trips, but how about South Africa, west coast USA and more unusual European weekends. Also wondered if you will be using BA Holidays for the double tier points at all this year? Happy Travels ✈️

  15. Hi Phil, great idea to ask for suggestions! And I love the artwork from Freemantle.

In terms of suggestions, or places I'd like to see; I've always been interested in the remaining British overseas territories and their 'capital cities', so I like the idea of Turks & Caicos, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla or St. Helena perhaps! Safe travels!
