You return to this city in your mind, and you won’t forget Rynok square in your heart. The secret city of Lviv, you leave lyrical and intimate poems in your heart… Rynok Square – the center of political, public, cultural and commercial life of the city for 500 years. Heart of Lviv

Lviv Rynok Square has kept its name since the 14th century. It comes from the German “der Ring” (circle, ring), the central squares of German medieval cities were built according to this principle.

The area has a size of 142 x 129 m, it is formed by 44 houses and the town hall in the center. Nobles and higher clergy had the right to build houses higher than three floors and to place more than three windows on one floor on the facade.

This left its mark on the architectural appearance of Rynok Square. There was no house numbering. Each house had a name from the surname of the owner or from elements of the decorative design of the facade: “Under the lion”, “Under the deer”, “Lukashevych’s tenement house”.

There was a bazaar on Rynok Square, which was visited by Persians and Englishmen, Turks and Dutchmen, Russians and Frenchmen. Court sentences were executed on the Square and the city administration was located. Bazaar on the square The market existed until 1944.

In the XIX-XX centuries. here they traded only agricultural products – vegetables, fruits, dairy products, as well as flowers. Around the town hall there are four decorated wells – fountains with figures of the gods of the Greek pantheon: Neptune, Adonis, Amphitrite and Diana.

These are works of art by Hartman Witwer, an outstanding sculptor of the late 18th – early 18th century. 19th century, which were placed at the corners of the square in 1793.

The bowls of the fountains were filled with water, and the merchants who traded in the market washed the greens and refreshed the fruits here. And in 1914, Cossacks watered horses from fountains.

Rynok Square is a kind of open-air museum, where the spirit of medieval Lviv soars, where every building is an architectural monument and shrouded in its own legend. In my opinion, the story has the same nostalgic flavor as childhood.

Only childhood years are remembered by us as our own lived experience, and we know the world of antiquity only from books, stories, and monuments of architecture or art.

In ancient times, another stone figure could be seen on the western side of Rynok Square, which combined two figures with their backs turned to each other. On one side was the figure of a man with a sword, on the other – a woman with scales.

It was the so-called pranger, where death sentences were carried out. Nowadays, this monument is kept in the Lviv Historical Museum (6 Rynok Square). The center of ancient Lviv, the capital of the Galicia-Volhynia principality, was the Stary Rynok square near the northern slopes of Zamkovaya Hill.

After joining the territory of the ancient Galician state to the Kingdom of Poland, Casimir III the Great in 1356 granted Lviv the Magdeburg right. The central square was moved to the south, where the Market is now located.

All the houses on Rynok Square are related to each other, but each of them is endowed with its own unique artistic image.

The eastern side of the square is the most interesting from the point of view of architecture. The best examples of the renaissance in the public architecture of Lviv and the real pride of Lviv residents are houses No. 4 (“Black House”) and No. 6 (“Kornyakta Palace”).

These buildings are masterpieces not only of Lviv, but also of European Renaissance architecture. Today, they have an interesting exposition of the Lviv Historical Museum, which includes 300,000 exhibits

Market of the 19th century. describes the German geographer and traveler Johann Kohl: “The Lviv Town Hall is such an ostentatious and beautiful building that only a few German magistrates can boast of…

It was considered a great honor to become a full-fledged citizen of Lviv. Among the privileges of a Lviv citizen: direct subordination to the burgomaster or the king, the use of the city’s judicial jurisdiction, the right to city land and, in turn, the right to build on it, the right to trade in Lviv.

At the same time, the resident of Lviv undertook to pay taxes to the city treasury. To obtain citizenship, one had to be 24 years old, a Christian of the Western or Eastern rites, legitimately born, and have a good family reputation.

The ceremonial act of acceptance into the City’s citizens took place in the town hall during the sessions of the magistrate.

Looking into the depths of the centuries, you imagine Lviv as an ideal city, with multinational communities that preserve their historical and national traditions, and at the same time are a single community. We dream that Lviv will be like this today and in the future.

  4. Beautiful Polish architecture with culturally foreign people. No commentary on Polish heritage of the city, obvious inferiority complex
