Bagamoyo (“Bwaga-Moyo”) which means “Lay down your Heart” or to give up hope in Swahili; once slaves got there, they had no hope of escape

Bagamoyo is an extension of an 8th century East African city that was a major trading port. Slaves from modern day Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Eastern DRC and other parts of the Eastern Africa were transported from this port city to the Middle East, Asia, Zanzibar and as far east as Europe. In the 19th century, the city became the capital of German East Africa.

The East African Slave Trade or the Arab Slave trade predated The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade by thousands of years. Estimates indicate that up to 20 million Africans were enslaved by the Arabs, Swahili and the Europeans.
