Újezd connects Karmelitská Street with the Kinsky Square. It measures about 550 m and, in the past, used to be part of the old road that led from the Lesser Town to South Bohemia and Germany. The Újezd territory belonged to Smíchov, and it used to be one of the oldest settlements in Prague. The Hunger Wall, built during the reign of Charles IV, cut the street in the middle – there used to be a gate to the Lesser Quarter. The name is derived from the word újezd – farm, land, which can be bypassed. Today, it is a vital traffic junction as it serves both automotive and tramway trafficofHere, you will also find the funicular to the famous Petřín Hill and many excellent pubs and bars worth visiting. More importantly, there is a memorial to the victims of Communism located at the base of Petřín Hill – it is a rather disturbing series of statues dedicated to the victims of the Communist era between 1948-1989. The memorial was unveiled on 22 May 2002 and is the work of the Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek and architects Jen Kerel and Zdeněk Holzel. It is a unique work of art – male statues appear to be disintegrating and decaying by eyes, the first man district whole to the last man, who becomes nothing and stands as a symbol of how the regime’s political prisoners were affected. An interesting touch is the bronze strip in the center of the stairs – it tells the estimated number of people affected by the Communist regime.

Malá Strana (Lesser Town) is a district of Prague, Czech Republic, and one of its most historic neighborhoods. It is on the left (west) bank of the river Vltava, on the slopes just below Prague Castle. The name distinguishes it from the more prominent districts of Prague on the right bank, with which it is linked by the Charles Bridge.
Initially, when it was founded in 1257, the district was called the New Town beneath Prague Castleseverely Nové Město pod Pražským Hradem). When Charles IV founded the New Town of Prague in 1348, Malá Strana was renamed the Lesser Town of Prague (Czech: Menší Město pražské). In the 17th century, the unofficial name Little Quarter (Czech: Malá Strana) was used.[iew of Malá Strana from St. Nicholas Church
In 1419-1420 the Malá Strana was burnt down by Hussites. In 1541 the town was strongly damaged by a fire that killed fifty people. After this fire, the city was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and many palaces of nobility were built there.

Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is a medieval stone arch bridge that crosses the Vltava River in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV and finished in the early 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built in 1158–1172, which a flood severely damaged in 1342. This new bridge was initially called Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been referred to as “Charles Bridge” since 1870. The bridge is 516 meters (1,693 ft) long and nearly 10 meters (33 ft) wide. Following the example of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, it was built as a bow bridge with 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two on the Lesser Quarter side (including the Malá Strana Bridge Tower) and one on the Old Town side, the Old Town Bridge Tower. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, mostly baroque-style, originally erected around 1700; all have been replaced by replicas. Charles Bridge has suffered several disasters and witnessed many historical events. Czech legend has it that construction began on Charles Bridge at 5:31 am on 9 July 1357, with the first stone being laid by Charles IV himself. This time was crucial to the Holy Roman Emperor because he firmly believed in numerology and felt that this specific time, which formed a palindrome (1357 9/7 5:31), was a numerical bridge and would imbue Charles Bridge with additional strength. The bridge was completed 45 years later, in 1402.

Vladimir, thank you for the new video
Super Prague, super tour, super bridge
There are many people on the bridge
Thank you for this walk in Mala Strana. I stayed at Hotel Waldstein for two and a half weeks in October. The walks I took frequently were along some of your path today, but not exactly. What was particularly interesting today is that you found Harantova street directly from passing the music museum and went past the Mandarin Oriental so quickly. I will admit that I constantly felt like I was in a maze the entire time I was there. I remember the night I found Harantova street 3:29 and how happy I was because I did not know that it existed. I wonder why the street has that name.
My great grandmother was a Harant. My great grandfather was a Trcka. I was able to find the traces of the Trcka family at Wallenstein Palace pretty easily. I know there is more here and there on the other side of the river. They were married in Baltimore, Md in 1890. Both immigrated in the 1880s and they were not from Prague.
The history of the most prominent members behind these names is most tragic. Whether m greatgrandparents are actualgenetic realationsI haven't been able to discern because of gaps in documents but it is a pursuit I have held and is part of my heart. The trip to Prague was a dream come true. But, my niece lives in Prague and teaches biology in one of the international schools. Her Irish husband obtained his master's degree in mathmatical physics there. They are happy in Prague and living the life that I dreamed.
