Santorin ,meist Santorini transkribiert; von italienisch Santa Irene) ist ein griechischer Archipel im Süden der Kykladen, gleichnamig mit dessen Hauptinsel, die im Griechischen zumeist Thira (neugriechisch Θήρα [ˈθira] (f. sg.), nach Transkription aus dem Altgriechischen Θήρα auch Thera) genannt wird. Santorin wurde 2011 von etwa 15.550 Einwohnern bewohnt. Seit der Verwaltungsreform 2010 ist es unter dem Namen Thira gleichzeitig eine Gemeinde (griechisch dimos) in der Region Südliche Ägäis.
Die Santorin-Inselgruppe liegt im südlichen Ägäischen Meer etwa 120 km nördlich von Kreta. Die nächstgelegenen Inseln sind Anafi 22 km östlich und Ios 19 km nördlich; Milos liegt etwa 77 km nordwestlich.
Die ringförmig angeordneten Inseln Thira, Thirasia und Aspronisi bilden den Rand einer vom Meer gefluteten Caldera, in deren Zentrum die Inseln Palea Kameni und Nea Kameni liegen. Der gesamte Archipel hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 16 km.
Santorini, usually transcribed Santorini; from Italian Santa Irene) is a Greek archipelago in the south of the Cyclades, of the same name as its main island, which in Greek is usually called Thira (modern Greek Θήρα [ˈθira] (f. sg.), after transcription from ancient Greek Θήρα also Thera). Santorini was inhabited by around 15,550 inhabitants in 2011. Since the administrative reform in 2010, it has also been a municipality (Greek dimos) in the South Aegean region under the name Thira.
The Santorini archipelago is located in the southern Aegean Sea about 120 km north of Crete. The nearest islands are Anafi 22 km east and Ios 19 km north; Milos is about 77 km northwest.
