Cape Town, South Africa is the oldest city in the country. The city was first discovered by the Portuguese explorer, Bartolomeu Dias, in 1488. Cape Town was originally established as a supply station for Dutch ships sailing to the East Indies. In 1652, the Dutch East India Company established a permanent settlement in Cape Town. The city was named after the Cape of Good Hope, which is located at the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula. During the 19th century, Cape Town became an important trading port for ships traveling between Europe and Asia. In 1910, Cape Town became the legislative capital of the newly formed Union of South Africa. The city played a major role in the anti-apartheid movement and was the site of many protests and demonstrations. In 1994, Cape Town became the capital of the Western Cape province and is now one of the three capitals of South Africa. Today, Cape Town is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, diverse culture, and rich history. The city also hosts many international events, such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
