Cross 2000 years of history!
The city offers a journey through time: browse the 2 vast Gallo-Roman districts and the archaeological museum, witnesses of the opulence of the ancient city of Vasio. Cross the Roman bridge that spans the Ouvèze to stroll through the medieval upper town to the foot of the feudal castle of the Counts of Toulouse. And in the plain, discover the cathedral and its cloister, which are among the finest examples of Provençal Romanesque art.

The upper town is organized at the foot of the castle, built in 1195 by Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse. He wanted to assert his authority against the bishop who had established himself as a lord in the medieval town (valley). You enter the town through a fortified gate from the 14th century, dominated by the tower of the Belfry. At that time, from the guard room established under the tower, we operated the drawbridge, the large gate and the portcullis which protected the entrance as we can still guess today. The city thus protected behind its ramparts was spread over approximately 3 hectares according to an irregular pattern of alleys with buildings built largely with reused materials from ancient and medieval constructions in the valley. On the whole, the main streets were laid out on a reverse slope to facilitate circulation and the establishment of noble and bourgeois dwellings. These streets which connect to the west, the old market square and to the east, the church square, are treated in calades (name coming from the stones wedged against each other to form the circulation surface) and are bordered by some very beautiful mansions. Rue de l’Evêché, we can point out the hotel Fabre de Saint-Véran which houses the hostellerie du Beffroi. It has two perfectly preserved 16th century door frames. Further on, the chapel of the brotherhood of white penitents adjoins the townhouse of the Taulignan family and those of the de Montforts. Continuing, the walker passes in front of the former bishopric, built at the end of the 16th century. Place de l’Orme, we will see the Maison du Prévost du Chapître and the facade of the Sainte-Constance chapel. Finally, facing the Church, located at the eastern end of the rocky hill, stands the neat residence of the de Blégiers. The cathedral-church started in the second half of the 15th century has been transformed many times for its enlargement and for its embellishment with the son of architectural styles. Pending its restoration, the building is closed to the public but we will linger with interest on the Jesuit-style freestone facade, on the unusual roof of the bell tower and on its reused medieval decorations. A few steps away, the plot overlooks the Ouvèze valley. A splendid panorama is offered to the visitor. We dominate the district of the Roman bridge and the river, and we enjoy a view of Mont-Ventoux.
