Col d’Izoard: Epic Car Journey in the Heart of Tour History
During my car journey across the Col d’Izoard Pass, I found myself steeped in the rich tapestry of cycling history. This iconic route, marked as D 902, unfolds from Briançon to Guillestre, cutting through the heart of the French Alps.
Every twist and turn seemed to whisper tales of the heroic rivalries that played out here during the Tour de France. In 1949, as Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali shared these same roads, I shared them too, albeit decades later. As the road climbed to an elevation of 2,360 meters, I visualized Bernard Thévenet overtaking Eddy Merckx in 1975, altering the fate of the race.
The surroundings were harsh but majestic, with the Alpine peaks creating an extraordinary backdrop. A chill in the air reminded me of the struggles and challenges faced by the cyclists. The sense of achievement accompanying each kilometer on this mountain road paralleled the spirit of perseverance emblematic of cyclists.
Despite the changing landscape, one thing remained constant – the Col d’Izoard Pass was a symbol not just of sporting rivalry but of personal conquest. Each hairpin bend and steep ascent echoed the history and spirit of the Tour de France, still alive in the memory of the French.
Passing through this segment of the road, I felt part of something larger. It was not just a physical traversal of one of the most significant points in cycling but also a journey through time – from Philippe Thys in 1922 to modern cycling heroes.
The Col d’Izoard, with its raw beauty and rich history, is not just a road but a living legend. As a tourist and history enthusiast, I felt a deep respect for this place, a witness to so many unforgettable moments in sport.
