I can see there’s quite a few people in the comments who are here for the ba recruitment team and just to let you know they’ll be along they’re in the Green Room they’ll be along at just before 8 8ish something like that so we got other things we get through to First
They’ll be here at 8 um and look forward to talking to you as much as you look forward to listening to them so that Johny good thank you very much moving swiftly on to Sky demon for continuing to support the live stream we couldn’t really do it without them and just
Little heads up um have a think about this we’ll give you the details next week we’re going to change some of the way we do the sky demon thing so basically we’re going to take your questions store your questions get your questions answered and then run some
Answers to those questions so if you got any Sky demon questions about anything to do with Sky demon squ demon demon Sky demon whatsoever just let us know an email in but we’ll have contact details on that for next week so get thinking so here you go of this top
Tip for Sky Dem this week hi I’m Hannah from Sky demon and this is this week’s top tip Sky deman offers the option to switch on night only airspace tap mapping airspace night only airspace to turn this option on this is particularly useful in Germany where there is an extensive
Network of military airspace that only applies to night flying for more information go to our website Sky demon. Aro short but sweet there you go right do they always do they always have bottles of wine on their desk at Sky demon yes sorry they always have bottles
Of wine on their desk at Sky demon if so I think they should become a flyer thing only only in only only when times are tough I think it’s normally champagne actually oh right more worryingly there was a riding crop around there I’m not quite sure what they were doing with
That oh that’s rather scary is it time for the weather there’s no no Simon so does this mean that we’re expecting a pants forecast I think it does I think it does let’s see shall we I haven’t I haven’t listened to this well good evening everybody sorry I
Can’t be with you this evening but with talk of cold weather next week everything seems to go a little bit crazy so my apologies for that but I could do next week’s forecast just for you very easily through the uh method of weather shards something like
This yep that’s just about the way it will be the following week’s forecast we’ll be using the method of dance um let’s get back to the weekend though and um it looks as if actually the weekend is going to be not bad for flying um this is tomorrow so Friday Some Cloud
Across uh East Anglia and Southeastern areas through the course of Friday see it on the cloud ceiling forecast here those green colors telling us where Cloud bases are between 2 and 4,000 ft tops about 5,000 ft it’s Strat accumulus Cloud so it is quite thin so actually
Tomorrow not a bad day at all on to Saturday high pressure still close by off towards the west but winds are falling lighter the flow is a little bit more moist and I think what that will mean is that we do have this risk of fog extending through Ireland through parts
Of Wales perhaps into parts of Southwest England as well but that will be slowly lifting and actually for most of us Saturday is going to be not a bad day for VFR flying yes there’ll be bits of cloud around but generally it looks a decent day the exception is going to be
Northern and Northeastern Scotland where we might just find one or two showers typical Bas is 4,000 ft top 6,000 ft in those showers though 2,000t bases 15,000 ft tops and a bit breezier as well there in the northeastern corner of Scotland onto Sunday a cold Northerly flow now
The showers are turning increasingly to snow even at low levels across Central and Northern Scotland generally non-verifiable here because of that and uh notice the orange colors on the cloud ceiling forecast telling us that bases could get quite low so we’re looking at bases of less than 1,000 ft we’re
Looking at tops of around about 50 15,000 ft elsewhere maybe some Cloud for Wales for parts of Southwest England as well but again it’s morning fog that lifts and I think here Bas is 2,000 ft tops at about 6,000 ft for many Northern and Eastern areas that’s probably where
The best of the conditions are going to be basis here around 4,000 ft tops at 7,000 ft and a very pleasant day so you see some decent conditions to be found during this weekend now the new flying season isn’t that far away and this is your opportunity to
Make sure that your weather skills are right up there and you can maximize your flying I’m going to be running my aviation weather School part one as an online course presented Live By Me on the Tuesday evenings of the 23rd and the 30th of January between 6:30 p.m. and
900 p.m. I’ll show you uh everything you need to know basically about flying weather get you beyond the PPL and get your forecasting more accurately uh yourself so you can be confident in the forecasts that you see from official sources I’ll show you as well how to be
Able to spot weather Windows 5 days in advance and show you how to forecast things like fog surface winds upper winds just loads of information um I’ve got a couple of places remaining on that course um so if you want to book your place now go to weather school.co do.uk
And you can book your place there it’ be absolutely super to see you there and above all that course is just great fun okay I will leave you with that for now whatever you doing have a fantastic weekend and uh I’ll see you soon bye for
Now so you see Simon and as Simon’s showing off his hat i g to show off my prototype t-shirt there you go fly. co.uk it’s a rather oversized logo I think you’ll probably agree maybe maybe not quite subtle enough for some people rather bright sorry and really rather
Bright I think that’s just the of the lighting in here to be honest it’s not quite luminous or anything but thinking this might be the this might become the the the the star wear for videos and things like that so different it’s quite Superman reference is L
So yeah well it is quite oh no Johnny’s mocking around and going in and out who knows what’s gonna happen should visit Sky demon HQ how many UK aviation-based app app Developers can there be it would be cool to see how they operate Mike you must have missed us doing the live stream
From Sky demon HQ in the past almost certainly will be back there this year so funny you should say that I was talking to Mr Sky demon himself earlier this week and we were talking about that very thing very thing so there will be one coming from uh the sky
Demon HQ pretty soon and it will include for For the First Time a tour of the of the sky demon operation that because people will get to see the world’s best Aviation themed L yeah absolutely yeah absolutely and uh okay moving on questions a week before this aerates um have you
Claimed an EC device electronic cons security device rebate uh and what did you buy this we’re asking this because the rebate scheme ends on the 31st of March and there is a new contender in the field of the electronic cons security devices the latest pilot aware device which we’re going to talk about
Not today but perhaps next week in the future yeah FX Rosetta Rosa FX y but put your answers in the comments if you have claimed and what did you buy yeah y y okay good right so some fly yeah so some fly 2020 3 news so if you took part in
Our fly 2023 Campaign which was supported thanks to Bose Aviation uh U avionics and Continental Aerospace Technologies thank you for joining in all the fun uh we’ve been looking at all the entries that you made on the uh Forum The Forum thread this week uh loads of you smashing the 2023 minutes
Goal um often multiple times over lots of you also getting plenty of air fields for the year for us overall though there was one standout winner and I I pulled a bit of his post it’s so on the 16th of December this year this person posted so
Yesterday I achieve my personal goal for 2023 of a 100 hours uh so I’m posting a final update for the year while I’ll hope to get a couple more flights in at least uh totals to date are 6 640 minutes 40 airfields visited not including home base 17 of them were new
Uh and it’s the first year that I’ve achieved 100 hours in a calendar year I’m closing in on 600 hours now um highlights of the year were the 23rd Airfield um and I’d already passed my 2023 minutes to meet the challenge which happened to be L 2K with my better half
Taking her abroad has always been a goal ever since I started flying and this is the first time that we’ve done it so our fly 2023 winner is Forum user Russ P better known as Russ Pinder should have had Fan Fair there shouldn’t we some there we go and and there
Is there is Russ and I’ve lost I’ve lost my lost my lines there we go Russ went on to say this year also included my first ever charity flight uh raising some cash for the backup trust which is a spinal injuries charity that’s very close to my heart for obvious reasons
Close to the top of the list also has has to be my longest ever water crossing 64 miles and back doing a day trip to Aly I’ve also managed to get a few friends and neighbors up I’ve been threatening to do for some time and sharing the passers P the passion for
Flying is always good especially when they seem to enjoy it um absolutely fantastic well done Ross and in an airplane that he built himself as well the fl24 challenge uh which we announced here last week is a bit different three aspects fly 2,000 nautical miles take two people who’ve never flown before
Flying and visit four destinations that are new to you we’ll have a new thread running in the flyer Forum um so it’s just all down to you just just a little caveat on the the two people who’ve never been flying before has never been flying before in G yes yeah yes yeah
They could have experienced the experience that is locost carriers they could we we know that people love GA yes we should mention that Russ didn’t just win fly 2023 is also one a Bose’s headset he has thanks thanks to the generosity of our supporters yeah Russ will be will’ll be coming to you
And we’ll get that delivered oh and he’s in the comments look at that thank you enjoyed every minute of it well well done Russ it was really really good yeah yeah well Russ right um so for new viewers and we’ve got quite a few in tonight I think um you can get
More of this if you join the flyer Club you can join the fly club for Just5 pounds a month um I am still here I don’t know why my camera’s gone off um yeah we’ve got loads of stuff planned throughout the year you can get access
To all of the content you get free landing vouchers throughout the year this month we’ve got haford West Sherburn Wickham dunwell um and we’ve also got a webinar coming up this month from Patty Wagstaff that’s next Tuesday 23rd um she’ll be teaching you how to fly straight and level and then Steve
Moley on night flying coming up in February which will be a good one so you can use that Sky demon tip to do nighttime airspace so you can do that for real and you can catch up on all of last year’s webinars as well so yeah just head to fly. co.uk
Membership there you go thank you very much and for those people who are here to wait for the CBA if you didn’t hear my announc from the beginning they’ll be along just before 8 we got some news coming up now and then it’ll be Ba’s turn so uh just thought we’d let you
Know right in the news then let’s start off with some news and we’re starting off with some not amazing news really and this is really about poppen um as you’ll be aware no doubt poam um has suddenly featured in the basing Stoke local area plan mentioned under poam Garden Village um plans for
Building three and a half thousand houses which clearly make no mention of the Airfield whatsoever there was a meeting at basing State Council uh that took place earlier this week where the local plan went went where the idea was people were trying to get some of the
People were trying to get the Airfield removed from the local plan but that that didn’t happen the local plan will now go out to public consultation there’s no consultation link been published yet um but as soon as it is we will we will cover that and give you the
Consultation link clearly popam for anybody who’s not been to Popp popam is is probably the the absolute kind of epitomy of a of a general aviation Grassroots Grassroots Airfield absolutely fantastic Place amazing SP great place it would be such a shame for it to to not be an airfi so many people
Have begun their Aviation careers at Popp it’s just really really very special place um so we’ll be keeping you up to date with that so that’s where we are on Popp at the moment just to update you there R there is a there is a consultation link I
Earlier on today uh later late this afternoon and we can pop it in the comments if you like okay oh no it’s not that one you better do that Ed I I see it now i’ I found it and I’ve put it in the comments I’m pretty sure that
There’ll be a whole raft of popm stories over the next few years yeah one coming up soon No Doubt with the the consultation so now’s a great time to start getting your consultation muscles flexed yes yes uh right so um uh new airplane news uh Sirus aircraft and jmb
Aviation have been teasing new airplanes uh we don’t have long to wait for the cus announcement because that’s 1:00 a. tomorrow morning um uh jmb is that’s uh they’re talking of that for the 1 of March which will be just in time for uh for AO friedricks harbon um and he
Guesses on what they might be planning I know Ian you’re not allowed to play this game because you might already know I know I already know what the cus thing is and there’s a new story that will go live on the site at one o’clock in the
Morning which just happens it’s a weird really weird time but obviously coincides with 8:00 p.m. eastern time in in the um there’s a story there there’s a link to a video we got um I mcgyver showed us around what the the new thing that we can’t talk about
Until 1 a.m. so uh if if you’re that interested check back at 1: amm otherwise have a look at it heavier cornflakes in the morning there we go yeah and and jmbs and they hinted they showed a a tailed aerplane didn’t they teail um but and none of their
Product up until now have been tail that obviously they make the vl3 the very fast 600 kg um micrite um they also they’re now building the um what used to be the Lance Evolution so who knows a t diamond or something bought CL yeah yeah I I think yeah definitely yeah
Definitely watch out for the Sirus story yeah who’s right who’s up who’s up next this is super slick isn’t sorry yes so this is the next story is about British aerobatics the association which uh organizes aerobatic competitions in the UK they’re having a bit of a makeover uh this summer um the idea
Being that they’re a bit worried that the aerobatic competitions are a bit elitist and they want to try and open it up to more people and they’ they’ve introduced a new new competition in Midsummer which is going to be heard at sell in in June and uh that’s they’re
Calling it the British Open it’s kind of a name from golf and the idea is with the open Event it’s open to everyone any aerobatic pilot around the world who is eligible to enter and uh basically compete for the Open Championship running alongside it will be the British
Nationals as well Plus on the Sunday of this three-day event there will be a freestyle Championship so it’s a it’s a big event for for British aerobatic and part of their whole new mission to try and open up to interest other people in aerobatics sounds like quite a good
Thing say it’s open to everyone I mean I can’t pitch up and have a crack in the 182 can I really I think is these days if you uh if you fly in UK or Europe aerobatics you have to have an aerobatics rating um so you didn’t
Previously used to have to do that but it’s it’s that’s now been adopt so you obviously have to compete have to have done some aerobatic training before you can enter the event I’ve got one of those you got one of those but you’re right go for the that be I don’t think very
Well good right it’s yes um airline news so Tui opened their application window for their 2024 MPL Cadet scheme uh last week on the 8th of January um it’s the second year in a row that they’re running it and yeah successful candidates will take part in a 19mon uh training program um including
Ground School nor the flying training um and of course this is a this is a fully funded scheme um so yeah they had they claimed last year they had Cadets um from all walks of life former cabin crew uh people from the Armed Forces who’ve been medically discharged two office
Workers from their head office uh all sorts of people um the current cects are four months into their course um they’ve most of them have completed sort of super numery flights on the flight deck and they’re all doing their atls at the moment which I’m sure they’re all loving
Um so yeah that’s another another good good sort of industry news story that Tu are back again with that and obviously we’re going to find out more from ba about what’s gonna happen with 2024 from them later yeah do you do you think that please forgive me Chey but tuy but do
You think that part of the 19-month training is learning how to act in in cheesy promo pictures go in the back is like just just be casual just be Casual in the background didn’t get the memo did they no right Dave yes so the Haw of typhoon uh project this is the project to bring back a Haw of tyon World War II Haw of typhoon uh back to Flying condition there isn’t a single airworthy
Ha typhoon in the world and uh anyway it’s been going on for a while um during the covid pandemic uh the funding fundraising to keep this project going kind of went by the wayside and they had a bit of a restart in the middle of last
Year um and while this while the funding was down they had to stop the rebuild process uh which was going on in a couple of places but now everything’s back on back to back on track um the aircraft fuselage which is the big thing they’re working on at the moment that’s
Coming together and uh it’s looking good you know and their objective is to uh is to have it not yeah they want to get it ready for a D-Day celebration because the typhoon is famous for playing a major part in D-Day clearly it’s not going to make the 80th this year but
Somewhere down the line maybe the 85th they’ll make it for that very good yeah chunk chunky Johnny yeah so just a quick one about flying into AA fix Harin um if you are that way inclined um the event this year uh is 17th to 20th of April um and arrival and departure slots
Will be available from I think the 15th of February you can book them online um it’s going to be automatically informed on the booking system from midmar you’ve got a slot and you can book and actually pay for the arrival and departure slots for the show period um there’s obviously lots of other
Things you pay for landing fees and parking fees or you get invoiced for them after the show as you ual so there’s yeah lots of lots of admin but yeah if if you’re up for flying into it and I know one or two people who are um
Yeah you’ll be able to get your slot books soon yeah the I mean the every pH you hav’t been is an amazing show and you should really go it is just absolutely fantastic but their Organization for booking slots and like that it’s quite possibly one of the worst things that is
That’s ever happened in Germany and that’s saying something isn’t it really last year was a was a bit of an alltime low wasn’t it it was just and that was after the year before which was a PO leag and they said we’re going to get it
Right so maybe Third Time Lucky I don’t know but it’s just I mean once the actual flying in bit I think I’ve flown in two or three times can’t remember um but it’s that’s all pretty easy and straightforward but their administrative system is just puns I mean you’d think
The Germans would be quite efficient at something like that but they are rubbish maybe it’s all all gonna happen this year Well fingers cross but don’t let that pull you off because it is just a fantastic show we’ll be we’ll be there it is yeah world’s one of the world’s
Best I think so abolutely something you won’t see there but um but is available to buy buy now uh it’s time to buy your pivotal Helix uh if you’re wondering what I’m talking about uh the pivot pivotal Helix was formerly known as the opener blackfly no this isn’t
Some random password generator gone mad although it does sound like it the Helix is a by- wied eight motor single seat all electric part 103 ultralite and it’s now on sale for the very ultral light price of $190,000 um customers can place orders for delivery in the US on pel’s website
Uh first customer shipments beginning June 2024 uh neat thing about the Helix is you can fly it without a pilot’s license however they insist on you having trading and that’s initial and periodic uh there’s three configurations uh package one is the base price of $190,000 and that’s um that’s all to do
With exterior finish um uh an HD Landing camera a vehicle cart Uh custom markings and um and warranty the package two adds more exterior ding a trailer a wi cart um an adsp traffic system two charges and an enhanced warranty and package three or package two is $240,000 for two for
$26,000 uh you get even more trim three charges um lighting uh and an emergency locator transmitter and training for one friend but for $260,000 you’d like to think so yeah so there we go if you think one of those order order now yeah well sounds like a that is yeah
And yeah finally I’ve got the last last news item bit of sad news reported by the Light Aircraft Association today and that was that the uh the recent death of David Coburn who was their head of training for the LA pilot coaching scheme a g Enthusiast flying instructor
Xrf pilot and Aviation safety expert David took the role on in December 2019 always Keen to encourage Pilots uh a number of whom will be flyer Club um people um uh to make use of the coaching scheme of what that could offer uh always giving credit to the coaches Who
David described as highly skilled experts with a lot lot of knowledge that’s definitely a loss to the GAC scene so and yeah sorry he’s a lovely BR I met him several times yeah yeah yeah he was I think I first met him when he was working for the civil aviation Authority
And that must be I don’t know 20 years ago or something now but yeah no absolutely a gentleman a true gentleman and in in flyer you’ll find was just just went live today back in I think January 2020 we ran one of the features which was our first solo feature and we
We had our first solo feature featuring David Co so kind of reput so you can go and have a go have a read of that now Susie suzan and Lucy if you’re there it’s time to turn your camera on there you go perfect worried for a little while then gonna I’m gonna
Bring you up on the screen there you go there you go suzan Lucy welcome thank you very much for joining us I’m so glad that you were there just waiting to turn your camera on I was getting a little bit worried I was wondering who was gonna play excuse
Down who was gonna play L but I’m gonna hand over to Johnny who’s who’s gonna run with this and I’ll just stand by with the pictures and we get a little a twoos slide PowerPoint to run at some point which will make the screen go a bit funny but we’ll make it
Work so everyone who’s been waiting and there are plenty of people waiting here you are it’s a bit you’ve been waiting for so Lucy you’re pilot recruitment manager ba and Suzanne you’re a captain also part of the pilot recruitment team oh going um if if you can still hear me um
We’ll start with Suzanne just tell us how you started in the aviation industry and your sort of journey into the left hand seat how did it all go so hi Johnny how everyone um so I started flying I was four um sitting on my father’s knee
In a glider I think you’ve got a picture of the glider um it’s a t 2021 that’s my father there and my brother and they’ve been me mentors in my life and my father um flew not commercially but um all his life and my brother’s actually n and
Pilot as well but it wasn’t until I went to um university I joined an Air Squadron and they taught me how to fly because although I was sort of bought up gliding and flying I’d never seen any women pilots at all so I didn’t realize that was actually a a career that I
Could do um so joined the Air Squadron and had opportunities to fly all sorts of things as well as the Bulldog I managed to get taxic rides and some fast Jets and you got a picture there of me with a hawk um so the opportunities in
The Air Force then were amazing but they weren’t offering um um although I got offered a short Service Commission with the Air Force so you couldn’t do um fast Jets or helicopter this is back in the 90s it was transport only so I went um to the Airlines and I joined British
Midland and they sponsored me so I got a Cadet with them um I was the only women on my course out of 30 which I think you’ve got a picture of there um and actually that hasn’t change much today we only sort of 6% of um women in
In the Airlines and then after that they put me on a dc9 which was my first aircraft and then I flew I came to um I did 737 course and then I decided to go Long Haul and I joined British Airways on the simple 7400 which was just the
Most amazing air crft ever to fly and then I went on to the 7 and that’s where I got my command and that’s where I am today but I only got that opportunity to do that because I did get this Cadet ship and uh we’re really excited at ba
That we’re offering again completely free sponsorship for people just to make it inclusive for everybody yeah we’ll we’ll talk a bit in more detail about the speedbird academy in a bit but obviously the industry’s changed slightly since you did your training but some of the some of the rules and and
Principles still apply so what kind of advice would you give to someone who’s at the stage of looking into cect ships and and even even paying for their own training I think it’s really important to do all your research really um to just make sure that you’re doing the
Right course for you um and then also to try and get a mentor as well mentoring is really really helpful and networking finding like-minded people um and listening to things like this to get tips um and also for being a pilot we’re not just looking just for um people who
Can fly that’s the fun bit really we’re looking for people who are good with leadership and teamwork and communication skills customer service so anything you can do um to get those sort of skills ticked off um it just look really good in your CV and just help you become a
Pilot so you’ve both had a busy probably nine months I think since you announced the speedbird academy it was in I think it was in July end of towards the end of early July wasn’t it um obviously A lot’s happened since then it’s been a big year for recruitment with ba it’s
Not just the speedbird academy um just tell us about before Christmas because you obviously delivered some great news to 100 people didn’t you how how did that go um yeah no it’s amazing so we um we emailed them all to let them know initially let the news sink in over the
Weekend or over a couple of days and then we rang everybody and it was amazing um ringing them all hearing everybody’s different stories where they came from like different backgrounds the jobs they were doing now what it meant to them and they I think all well all
Hundreds wasn’t I didn’t call all 100 I called some of them um and they all kept Thanking us and like we’d given um like they hadn’t earned it themselves so it was really um lovely that they were so excited um to get it but yeah and we’ve
Been in contact with them since and we’ll remain in contact with them because big bit of work now starts to get them class one Medicals and uh class two Medicals for Spain and America and get them ready on the courses so yeah it’s been great yeah did you were you
Sorry to interrupt just two seconds and I’ll hand you back Johnny were you not tempted during some of those course to do the things they do on some of the TV programs yeah yeah hi hi um afraid I’ve got yeah we made a mistake it’s not you
Um no not at all but they um yeah and it there was some phenomenal um young people but it it’s not all the demographic of people that we’ve recruited um has been great so yeah it you did some of the interviewing why didn’t you see oh the standard was so
High I mean honestly it was um amazing what they um learned and researched and the the passion that they had for for flying um really showed which is what we wanted yeah if it’s not if it’s not commercial SEC sorry Johnny I keep stepping on you give me two seconds it’s
Not commercial secret and you ended up with 100 can you say kind of what number you started with uh yes so 20 24,000 people submitted and like log on answer the question and went into testing um and then we had to manually screen so um not exact numbers but around 8,000 pass
The testing so that’s the point where um I actually went on holiday um and left the team so I’ve never which they still won’t let me forget that um and as a team they actually went through and read the 8,000 applications so so a top tip
Would be um we ask a motivation question and we want to know about you and it was the first time we saw the use of AI and um it was quite obvious if the answer had been generated by by AI so don’t do that um because it’s not what we’re
Looking for we want to know you and why you’re passionate about being a pilot and coming to work for us sorry Johnny back to you all right thank you um well I was gonna say you started off I think was it I think 50 Cadet ships were initially offered when you announced in
July and obvious that grew to 100 is that because you were looking at the the quality of people and going actually we should take an opportunity here to get these people yeah 100% so as we were going through the process um we’d worked out at each point how many people we
Were going to assess and when we looked at the cut offs it was we looked at it and it we had to bring more people through the process but what we didn’t want to do was get to the end and the ratio so it was by the time you got to
The end there was a one in two chance that you be successful so if we’ have CAU the same amount of people through but left the number as it was um it would wouldn’t have been at that stage so yes so we were very lucky um City
Flyer um are sponsoring 10 people and then uh ba and Euro flyer are sponsoring the other 90 okay and on the initial application I think the age limit was open I think was it open till it uh 50 or 55 55 55 and when you think about people winning
Cadet ships for Airlines you imagine they’re all from 18 19 20 22 23 how what does DH bre go to to some of um so the um it ranges from uh there are some 18yar olds that um and again blew us away when they sit and talk to you and
Can give you the best examples you’ve ever heard and better than some of we shouldn’t say the direct entry Pilots that we interview it’s um there amazing so um and then the oldest is in the 40s brilliant the range of Ages here yeah so big question is what are your plans for
2024 um you know what how’s Ba’s appetite uh yeah definitely so um we’re already in meetings reviewing how last year went um and tweaking it was the first time we’ve run a something like this in a long time so um we’re Happ happy with how it went um
100% but there are ways to improve it and make it better so we’re already in meetings looking at that and the hope will be that quter two this year will relaunch for the same number again wow wow excellent fantastic yeah great news yeah and I suppose um for people if
They’re self- sponsoring we are still running our tagging programs with um some flight scools and if on a modular route we’ve got an entry uh Point as well so the 100 that are sponsored but there is opportunity of people are self- sponsoring um either on integrated or
Modular route as well so how many how many Pilots a year do you need at British Airways um that’s a good question um we about 300ish a year um in the coming years that fluctuates um up and down but that’s a very sweeping statement that’s not necessarily fact
But um that’s the hundred um CET having them as a baseline underneath to support Sur recruitment for us and are you encouraging women to be uh to to apply I mean I are you for instance doing a positive discrimination to try and get more women
On into the fleet um so we we can’t positively discriminate because it’s um illegal in the UK but um we Susie is a great Ambassador for us as our all our female Pilots so we are we’ve got an Outreach Pro program this year that um we work with the air League um fantasy
Wings um resilient Pilots so there’s lots of organizations out there that we’re working with to look at encouraging people and letting them know that isn’t there is an opportunity now so um it’s and it’s not just women people from ethnic minorities um people from sociate and I can never say this
Word socieconomic backgrounds so people that have never thought this was a realistic um opportunity for them we want to get out there so us talking to you tonight hopefully helps um you see suzan who’s been a pilot and is now a c you know it’s a captain Long Haul
Captain so it’s it’s having good Role Models out there that people can see and see that this is a career for everybody can you give any insight into without sort of giving people the answers but you know how to go through the assessment process how to answer question questions what qualities and
And personal attributes are going to help them if I’ll talk so the initial bit is um as I’ve said we’ve said we want to know about the person that’s behind the application so um getting you know selling yourself on a CV uh making sure the answer that so we normally give you
A word count or a character count use the full character count um to get your point across to us and what you want to say to us and then the initial Point there’s a couple of tests um so there’s a mass test a situational judgment test
And a checking test um the mass test is time so it’s practicing your math so we always recommend the BBC skill bites to make sure that you’re um practicing ahead of time don’t leave it till the application window opens and then um sounds very basic but the situational
Judgment test read the question all the way through because there’s usually two parts to it and again the checking test is just making sure you’re reading it clearly um and not missing the point of the um answer and as as we get to assessment you assess for us so so we
Are yes all all the test as well we do um if you connect with us on on our different um platforms that we have we do suggest platforms where you can practice these tests as well so you’re not hopefully coming to Blind um and then when you come to the assessment
Stage um we do uh initial interview um and then on the last stage we had a fun um day where they came just this is when we’re down to the last 100 and we did um a speed dating uh interview which was the first time we’ve done it with um
Eight deaths in a row and people have got four minutes to answer a question and then they move on to the next one and that sort of was quite good to get an Insight from different PE people so we all had a good uh we could all them P
Together so again it’s just things like um having done your research about British Airways to show your motivation for flying to show you’ve got skills that we need like the leadership and teamwork um customer service um and that you’re really good communicator as well because communication is key to be a pilot really
Yeah the time from the from the the email and the phone call before Christmas I guess um when when would you expect them to be out and if they call it flying the line anymore but out and and earning money for BA earning money um so they
Will come so the first course starts they’re staggered throughout the year at the two flight schooles so first course with skyborn starts in March FTE it’s April so 80 months after that um we will be planning for them to come in um we have a very structured induction for
Them they then go off and do the type rating sometimes Outsource we can do it here ourselves um base training which is I’m told is the thing that every pilot remembers um other than the first solo flight um so yeah 2020 2025 they’ll be into the business
What are they all going onto the same Fleet or is it I mean obviously cityfly is a different Fleet yes so cityfly B and Breer um and then hether and gwick will be the 320 um I’m just going to pick a question out of the comments from there are many
Amazingly named H um how does the tagging process work for modular students can you give a quick insight into that um yeah so we run a scheme currently called the newly qualified pilot pathway which is NQ PP for short which is not much easier to say um so
Watch out we are going to Rebrand some of that um very shortly um and so you have to have been post APS MCC you need 85% ground score with no more than three resets and your first series pass in your CPL and ir and we also you’ve been to know more than three
Atos for the commercial part of the training or the big Parts trunks of the training um you can submit an application we’ll review that you hit the entry criteria again there’ll be a motivational question there so make sure you sell yourselves um and yeah so that’s that’s the newly qualified pilot
Pathway so that’s where the modul students can apply yeah okay um without throwing too many really technical questions at you um Aviator SJ says basically got some flying experience and done some atpl exams um do any of the schemes apply to them um no so we I supp we were watching
The questions as they came in so um we don’t have a restriction on hours but I I believe that’s because we’re doing an atpl rather than an MPL um but once what will preclude you from applying to our scheme for sponsorship would be if you started your atpl exams so unfortunately
At that point you can’t apply okay yeah um all of your cets are going through npl courses correct no we’re doing an atpl this year excellent um I’m just looking through the comments again so ples trains and everything in between says I’m a teenager at school but I would
Love to be a pilot what can I do to help yeah so I suppose there’s lots of things one thing we haven’t spoken about um Susie mentioned earlier about um Mentor so we have a really great online platform called speedbird Zed which is on the emerging Talent page of our
Website um and actually C is a mentor yeah so it’s just a platform that students can um connect with and they can choose mental whether it’s um a pilot or engineering any sort of role that we have at VA um and they can ask a
Question and we can get back to them and give them advice and then sort of support them throughout their journey into whatever they’re doing we also offer Insight days and work experience with British areas as well so it’s a platform that they can um do the modules
And that allows them them to apply for work experience days and it’s been really successful it we’ve had quite a lot of um people come through we had 100 people recently y yes we yeah we ran our first Insight day which we had 20 um year 10 students in and they got
To some time in the Sim which is great and got to see the operations so and we will start to run those quarterly and then your flying future events that we hold here as well they’re all at the moment for certain age groups we are
Looking to see how we can expand that to include uh different age groups um especially if at school the other thing any extracurricular extracurricular activities so things like the air Cadets Duke of Edinburgh um Team like Saturday football netball um hockey whatever Sports you’re into they’re all good for team building
If you’re a captain of a team that’s your leadership work experience if you’re still at school might be a little bit young but um and when we say work experience it mean customer service experience because actually interacting with customers you’re behind a lock door a lot of the time so it’s really
Important that our Pilots can interact with the customers when they need to yeah there’s a good question here I thought if I could only find it now about the school leaving International School there you go is International School Leaving exams to the GCS are they accepted um so there’s a website called
Etis which is ecct i s um and you can go on there you don’t need to pay for the certificates but they give you guidance and what is the equivalent so um you don’t if you haven’t studied in the UK um or you didn’t do GCS because not all
Schools do GCS we will take equivalence but that’s the the website that we use to get the equivalence done then on a similar note Ben asked the question does British Airways plan on tweaking gcsc requirements for the next intake or will it be the same it will be the
Same mentioned about the motivational questions there is that is it is it important to have an enjoyment of fly and to have a to really want to fly or is it just another job I think it’s well I think we we need to see that you’ve got a passion for for
Flying we don’t expect it to have gone flying because not everyone can afford to to do that but if you you know follow whatever you can you go to air shows you do you know you try and get involved with um flying somehow through maybe the air Cadets or something like that we
Just want people who um to give everyone an opportunity to just have a chance of this um career really yeah and definitely watching things like a live stream like this every week that will help a lot where they should start while while we just work through the other comments um Suzanne quickly
Just like best moment that you’ve had so far and also give us an idea of a difficult moment for an airline captain my my dad’s just retired and I know he’s not looked back because it’s made him go a bit gray and he’s just oh my camera’s disappeared um yeah just just talk
Through some of the difficult IES and and and also I did read about one of your sort of best moments which I think involved San Francisco yes exactly so my best moment my proudest moment was um in the days because I’m quite old and uh we used to
Have the flight deck door o open my father actually sat on the jump seat when I came into land on a 747 into uh San Francisco um so he taught me how to fly so for him to see me land it it was a proud moment for him and it was
Memorable for me um I suppose difficult moments it tends to be passengers sort of mess things up for you sometimes they get ill and you know they can get quite seriously ill as well so sometimes you have to dump field divert um get them sent off to hospital and just do your
Your best for them and wind is always fun the girls we’ve had recently um that’s always a bit and particular when you got big jet TV filming as well um so one question that I have seen keeps keeps cropping up um also in comments on pilot live posts and things
Like that is flying experience you don’t have to have any to apply for the speed bird Academy you you don’t um but we would recommend that you’ve had at least one flying lesson um we had somebody years ago get to the Flying stage and realized they had vertico so had to come
Off the course because they’d never flown before or been in a light aircraft before so um we do recommend and um as Susie said earlier gliding is a slightly cheaper option but still an amazing EXP experience and gives you there’s great handling um I went gliding recently um and still can’t couldn’t be
A pilot because I had to close my eyes coming into land but um as good in his experience as um fixing flying so and there are lots of scholarships available as well so apply for those if you can get any free flying take it Maria asks at what a level should I
Consider taking in six form but I mean the thing about this um Cadet ship is that we we don’t actually ask for any a levels at all um and you don’t actually need any a a levels to do the um the course it would help if you
Did do maybe some Sciences if you wanted to make it easier for you because some of the you know um the technical exams are easier if we got a bit more of a science background but we don’t ask for a levels but just because we’re trying
To increase the net really and throw it as wide as we can to give everybody a opportunity yeah um in terms of this is a how long is a piece of string really but in terms of career progression what are you looking at from when you join to when you get
Three stripes versus to when you get four Stripes um so inba um you join with two as a as first officer after about four years you get your CN the first officer and then you’re waiting for command so it historically well actually at the moment it’s probably five six years to a
Short hole command you could go to youly and get one sooner if you wanted to but long haul at the moment um to get a long haul command we’re looking about 19 20 years at the moment so it’s a you know you got very experienced people flying your long
Haul so I mean if ba if ba is running a CET scheme which it is which is fantastic particularly if it it carries on this year I mean in in the past it’s kind of almost been that ba hasn’t I don’t want to say hasn’t had to try hard
To recruit but but has had has recruited many people from other airlines is that something is it just the is it kind of doing the right thing that it has the cadet program is it because it it wants to grow its own Talent is it what’s the
So there were lots of reasons um why it came um why why it started being talked about and I suppose it it was being talked about pre-co obviously that um stopped stopped it and it was um another team actually um that have been involved all the way through that got it signed
Off um and then I feel we as a team we’ve taken complete credit for it so feel a little bit guilty um because it was another team that got it it signed off but um the I there a couple of things it’s around giving making sure that everybody’s got the opportunity to
Do it but it’s not just people that have um tens of thousands of pounds and more SATs you know available to pay for training so it’s given the opportunity to everybody um but also it assures us a baseline of a pipeline of Pilots so we still we’re still recruiting um direct
Entry Pilots at the moment onto both our short Hall and Long Haul fleets and we’ll continue to do that um obviously with brexit um the licensing is a bit more complicated now so we can only uh my words out we can only employ people with the UK CA license and if you’ve
Never held one before it’s not as straightforward as it used to be so that does take a pool of people away from being able to work for us at the moment but I supp to answer the question for both for doing the right thing and
To assure us a pipeline of pilots in the future I have to say there’s a huge number of detailed questions some of which you would have would have seen going going through there so I’m not there clearly not going to be enough time even if you stayed here which which
Which is is there is there maybe an opportunity for for possibly Lucy to go through the questions and create a like an answer sheet after maybe afterwards in the kind of followup period yeah of course yeah 100% we can do that and again um I know somebody put or you put
The um link to the emerging Talent pages on the career site so um the other thing that we do as a team on the first Wednesday of every month from 4 to 5 um there is a link that everybody can join and you can come on there and ask us any
Questions as well so um there is opportunity to speak as a team uh there’s an event this weekend at the University of West London we will be at Pilot quiz live in London and in Manchester um so um and it’s us that are there kind of we are we’re we’re a
Relatively small team for the amount of people we recruit each year but we’re very passionate about talking to all so um you know connect on LinkedIn we can’t always respond to every message we get because um we do get lots but we’re the speedbird said um we’re about to put
Some more pilot mentals on there so that we’ll spread the load for Susie and um elj and Dan so there is opportunity to ask questions one thing I think and Susie hopefully all agree there is a lot of information out there and online I would Google your question before you ask it because
Sometimes it’s a little bit frustrating um some of the questions that we get asked because the information is there so do your research and when you get stuck doing that research that’s when reach out to us and we can ask the answer the more difficult questions for
You okay I know you had a little a little PowerPoint slide I don’t know have you covered most of that or is it worth bringing that just before we we run away yeah it was just it’s the requirement for applying for the Academy so I think there’s been a couple of queries about
Um the GCSE requirements it might just be worth having a very quick run through it um let’s have a quick look yeah sorry some of the formatting has gone out off when I sent it to but um so we will when the scheme opens that it
Will so you can be 17 to apply um you have to be 18 to start training there will be a date on the um when you apply that it will say on the 1st of March 2025 you need to be 18 if you apply we
Can see that you’re not going to be 18 we will reject the application so make sure that you um meet all the requirements it’s six gc’s grade a to c or 5 to9 uh we get asked lots of why it’s not 4 to9 um in the new gradings
We’ve done a lot of research about this and we believe in the new grading system 5 to9 is the appropriate level um you need to be fluent in English if you’re not a native English speaker you need the academic um IL lets level 5.5 um slight change this year due to
The increase in the skilled workers Visa the minimum wage we’re going to have to now ask for the right to live and work in the UK without sponsorship because the uh salary uh threshold has increased quite significantly um so the pilot salary for this won’t match it uh passports prob goes without without
Saying between 5 52 and 63 um worth looking into the U whether you can get a CIA class one medical uh there’s lots of information on the CIA website you don’t need to have a class one to apply and we are paying for the class one Medicals um
But it’s worth looking at what the restrictions are about getting an initial class one because if you can’t get that unfortunately um you can’t train to be a pilot great um and this very quickly this is um what we’ve um probably touched on this so online application
With the three test and an application question it is a human that sits and reads the application questions so don’t don’t use AI again um there we then ask you to record an you talking through an announcement the flight score tests um they’re both currently using a testing
Suet called Aon and there are some practice tests online that you can do um the flight scores do a groupex exercise an interview and then if you’re successful through all those stages so when you come to the VA assessment and Susie’s mentioned um how that worked and
Then at that point you get a conditional offer of employment um to go to the flight to go do your training and then yeah brilliant that’s just made you small again not quite sure do that brilliant well on that basis I think uh we’re going to have we’ve gone over time
A little bit but that’s fine because there and there’s a gazillion questions you would have seen and we won’t get time for more so it’ be if you could if at some stage if you could pop through those and and answer those that are more complex or that aren’t answered
Elsewhere anybody else if you haven’t had your question Googled if you haven’t had question answered then go Google you probably find the answer out there um so I’d like to say suzan Lucy thank you very much for your time thank you very much uh for for somehow whether you can
Take credit for it or not doesn’t matter but take credit tonight for for running the 100 people and again next year and I look forward to seeing you at PCO in April in London and again in Manchester um thank you very much so uh it must be
Time for yeah my mouse is oh it’s all going wrong can someone’s gonna have to drive my mouse is Broken Hallu F famous famous quote someone’s gonna have to drive my mouse is [Laughter] broken un broken itself it was an airb I turned it off and on again that was so informative much well hopefully it’ll inspire a whole bunch of you and what great news that the scheme
Is going to run next year is gonna run this year yes yeah absolutely and while all use ba people or ba people here do us a favor click like make some comments in the comments section subscribe to the to the YouTube channel on that stuff you’ll learn all sorts of things about
General aviation you’ll be able to talk far more interestingly when you go to your interviews about Aviation so and you can subscribe to the YouTube channel for nothing yeah so fancy hanger this week thanks to the live stream exra viewers yesterday we were tasked with picking our favorite airplanes from the movies
Uh there’s lots of them so who picked what who’s first I think this one I think we should kick it well Dave Dave’s gone for the most obvious so I think we should off with Dave get that one out of the way while I turn the band well it is the
Most obvious yes I agree but there’s a reason for that and that’s because it is the coastar to the most famous Aviation and best Aviation film ever which is the original Top Gun film so my P is the fa14 known as the Tom Cat it’s just a fantastic it’s the fastest thing it
Blows out blows the current new ones out of the water it’s fast it’s brilliant it’s in the food in the film it’s stars in the film it’s just brilliant and of course in Top Gun Maverick the sequel it makes a cameo role although not a flying
One it appears to fly but that’s all done in on the computers but because they couldn’t find a flying one spoiler alert no I definitely saw it flying You’ just ruined ruined my movie days but anyway yes sorry about that but no Tom C has to be the fantasy hanger film
Fantasy I think when was the last time you watched the original Top Gun Dave probably about three weeks ago okay who’s next I think pop to Johnny I think to Johnny cool right I’ve gone for actually a movie that I’ve not watched yet and I need to it’s called
Devotion it came out 18 months ago which is all about um some pretty cool flying in the Korean War um and this isn’t the main airplane that’s in the film but I’ve gone for the f8f Bearcat which whilst isn’t the it’s not the sort of starring role but it’s
Definitely the best looking airplane in the in the film um if you’ve ever seen one in real life if they’re absolute machines beautiful things sound great flying very fast look awesome I’d love to fly one one day yeah AR yeah I heard someone talk about flying the Bearcat
Once and they said it’s not as difficult as think the main thing is you just have to when you open the throttle make sure it’s pointing in the direction you want to go that ples to anything to be honest that’s that’s how I’ve tended to fly most of the time and
And as Lucy was talking about earlier she she’s like I had to close my eyes for landing it’s like I think there’s a lot of us that do that for landing and takeoff I thought that was supposed to do not going Fly With You [Laughter] Ed okay I’m gonna jump in there leaving
Leaving Ed for last and I I I I went for a film in rocket GB Model Z named after Granville brothers who designed the original back in 193 30 31 I think it was is a magnificent it’s just Disney planes before its time it’s just mad isn’t it
It’s just it’s just a Fant it’s kind of like the for anyone who doesn’t know anything about Aviation it’s the personification of of a beast of an aerplane um yes and I would like one in my fantasy hanger please it’ll be quite a place I’m not sure there are no original
Surviving are there I think to be the only there was only one made and unfortunately it was lost when they had a flutter incident with it but um some guys in Florida created a almost perfect replica which is that one there um and it was famously uh it was it flown a lot
By delmare Benjamin who built the the replica of the bigger gbr2 and he’s he and he loves his R he loved the R2 and flew over a thousand hours in it and said what’s the fuss about and was famously praiseworthy of the model Zed as well so should have said like Chuck
Me the keys and I’ll show you that’s that’s I think that’s a Kermit weeks airplane Now isn’t it yeah Kermit weeks bought it so yeah I’m surprised so there you go that that’s obviously from the rocketeers rocketer which is a great and I’ve also gone to The Rocketeer for my choice
Um I when we first one of the first uh fancy hanger things we did back in 2020 in early days of live stream I picked the model Zed so I can’t do that again I’ve also picked the travel air mystery ship that appears in the in the racer
Scene this time around I thought you know what I’m going to go for this The Fabulous Ryan St uh it appears uh in one of the racing scenes in The Rocketeer you see it there with a with a great lakes and the and the Mystery ship um
Only appears a few times but that is just a gorgeous airplane and and I think that’s proper fancy hanger fodder you know people would walk in and they stop them in their tracks I mean that’s a that’s a kind of like tesque it’s it’s not it’s not totally
Trouser but it is trouser esque and you I think having seen you after you’ve been flying it’s what would appeal especially about the airplane is the amount of time you’d be able to spend cleaning it I know I any airplane where I can totally exceed the number of
Flying hours with the with the number of pity polishing hours is definitely and as as Darren from a says polish pants every pants yeah I mean we got to have a trouser undercarriage fantasy hanger at some point probably should yeah yeah there’s there’s a lot of a lot of lot of
Value in that so um so anyway so there’s a lot of dat it was a clearly a strong start from Dave um Julian Treadwell suggest Murphy’s the Grim and duck in Murphy’s War um Dan Smith I’m picking Firefox they all although I need to brush up on my
Russian not a real airplane but very cool Dan what about anything that was in the Magnificent Men in their flying machines that is a tremendous film Bell X1 in the right stuff um oh Johnny wins very strong Johnny wins there Johnny will be hard to beat yeah basil Hughes H1 in the
Aviator is fantastic yeah uh Johnny wins um oh good suggestion from Mark alry how about grommets Flying S car in that’s a good choice um and that is real that’s it yes uh what else have we got uh oh everyone wins very diplomatic Annabelle that’s the winner I don’t know
What that is Aviator Steve hold Dave Scoops it tonight uh Ed true to form with those trousers but um nice but no Tom Cat edwins for me uh Dave wins in a close second shiny spat Ed good choice Dave wins Johnny’s Bearcat steals it tonight draw for Dave and Ed Dave well
Fair to say it’s probably a Dave winds isn’t it and Top Gun is a very film so your mind edwins right before anyone changes their mind again unless they’re changing their mind me let’s have a quick what are we how are we doing for events in Dave right well there’s not much flying
Flyings at the moment but there are the Gasco safety evenings there’s a whole series of those going through the winter into early spring the next flying event I could find was on the 17th to the 18th of February when Santo Airfield is celebrating its 80th anniversary um
Looking ahead found out today in fact that the world micrite championships are coming to the UK in uh at the end of July beginning of August and they’re going to be staged at Dean Thorp Airfield near Corby um the effort to put those together is is underway already um
I’ve been talking today with the organizer Owen Owen can’t remember [Laughter] his I this sometimes anyway so yes so that look that to look forward to brilliant okay well in that case I think we’ve uh We’ve run over by six minutes which is which is quite more
Than we normally do so thank you very much everyone for joining thank you team for presenting thank you Lucy and um suzan for presenting and thank you everyone for watching have a great time fly safely this weekend looks like the weather’s going to be great if you
Haven’t clicked like click like if you haven’t joined join five quid a month thank you very much have a good one take care bye

My wife is a HR Director you was horrified at the comment by Dave about positive discrimination. The answer that this is illegal is correct. Careful Dave you HR might be on your case!!!!!!!!!
I'm trying to find the public consultation about Popham but it's buried in the council website and you need to create an account. Can anyone confirm what document it is please so we can all easily locate it and respond
