Cheap Plane Ticket Hack: Airport Hanky Panky

Don’t be married to one airport yes I know we all have our favorite airports out there I understand that but marrying yourself to just one airport also limits your options so my advice for you if you’re looking for cheaper tickets is to make sure you’re being flexible in the

Airports not just that you’re flying to but also the airports you’re flying from so you’re not just flying from Chicago O’Hare you also look at Midway you’re not just looking at Loria you’re also looking at JFK and Newark cuz that’s going to give you more options and of

Course more options means more chance you’re going to find a cheaper flight but also when you’re flying to a destination you want to come here to colemire well you could do straussburg which is nearby or you could do basil or you could look to other places and have

A little bit longer of a train ride and see what those prices do and how they change I know for us we actually don’t fly out of our hometown we drive an extra 40 minutes away to go to another airport that gives us one less connection when we fly to Europe which

Stays us between 3 4 hours every flight so just have options out there don’t be set with just one airport try and see what else is out there for you

Look around for more airports to save money when traveling.

  1. When me and my Mum travel, we use Manchester Airport (MAN) mostly due to excellent support for hidden disabilities, but we also consider using Liverpool Airport (LPL) as it is also a great airport for hidden disabilities 🙂

  2. LaGuardia flights are generally cheaper than JFK. Before the renovations at LaGuardia, I generally stayed away from LaGuardia. They've made huge improvements since then.

  3. Last summer I traveled from Chicago to Paris and returning Brussels to Chicago. American, United, Air France & KLM were over 4500 for 2 Premium Economy seats. I paid $3500 on SAS Scandinavian Airlines with a layover each way in Stockholm. It was fun searching each European carrier and ultimately I saved $1000 that could be applied to hotels and entertainment expenses.

  4. We are close to Philadelphia, and we bounce between Newark, Philly and BWI. Sometimes its worth the 90 minute drive to BWI or Newark to save some money and have a direct flight.

  5. Hello from France

Be careful to look at the additional costs that a more distant airport may incur with a cheaper ticket. an example to go to Catania in Sicily I had the choice either to leave from Luxembourg 70km from home or from Paris which is 350 km where the ticket was 150 euros cheaper, but to arrive in the French capital it was necessary that I take the train plus one night in a hotel because the flight was early in the morning so the calculation was quick, it was Luxembourg without counting that from Paris I had a 5 hour stopover in Milan while it was direct from Luxembourg

  6. One thing to be careful of if you’re trying to hack together a cheap ticket, especially with budget airlines: if you paid for your tickets separately, they’re separate itineraries. The airlines are only responsible for getting you from the beginning of that itinerary to the end, so if something goes wrong between itineraries, the airline isn’t compelled to do anything to help you.

For example let’s say I’m trying to get to Athens on the cheap, so I buy a ticket on Virgin for Seattle <-> London (LHR) and then RyanAir London (STN) <-> Athens. It works fine on the way out, but coming back I get stuck in traffic while transferring airports, so I miss my connection.

As far as Virgin is concerned, I just missed my flight. Their commitment starts at Heathrow, and I wasn’t there, so they don’t owe me anything. I may wind up buying a last-minute ticket for a transatlantic flight, which you can probably guess isn’t cheap. I’d suggest planning for a long layover, probably even an overnight, in the transfer city.

  7. There is no way that I will drive to LAX(next closest), even if it would be cheaper LOL. Therefore, I always fly out of SBA and catch my connection in SFO or LAX

  8. I sometimes get good deals using my smaller regional airport. I save time and money, but just means one extra connection, beats have to pay for long term parking.

  9. I prefer and will continue to fly in and out of Frankfurt Airport every time I go to Europe. From there I will take a train to wherever else in Europe I need to go. Frankfurt Airport is safe, clean, large, professional and highly organized. Everything you need goes in and out there. God Forbid you should ever get stuck in Frankfurt! You're putting yourself at risk of having a marvelous time.

  10. We sometimes us Charlotte Douglas instead of Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson airport because it is closer to European destinations and sometimes cheaper airfares

  11. To fly from my city, it takes me 40min to get there, then the preamble, boarding, flight (45 minutes), disembark, wait for the transfer (plus stress if the first plane is going to be late and we miss our connection so you take a flight that gets you there 4 hours earlier) or, a 3hr bus ride takes me to the airport doors, no transfer, no stress…

  12. My nearest major Airport is DTW. By traveling four hours each way, paying to park two cars for a month, and two hotel rooms for our return to rest, we still saved $3000(!) flying through YYZ instead. I could not believe how high our local fees are!

  13. Wish this was an option available to me here in Canada. The next closest airport to me is a 2.5 hour & international border crossing away and probably has worse availability & connections than my home airport. A better airport than my home airport is probably a 7 hour drive across the border.

  14. The only caveat I will say is to look at parking prices if you drive, or transit prices if you take transit to the airport. In my case, if I parked at BART Berryessa and rode to Milpitas to catch the 60 to the airport it is $2.30 BART fare + $2.50 VTA fare to the airport $4.80, one way. If I rode to Oakland Airport it is $13.40 for BART to the airport, one way. And if I rode to San Francisco it is $15.35, one way.

Also, I have saved money by taking off from San Francisco airport and landing in Oakland. Just make sure you factor in a way to get to your vehicle or have a friend pick up/drop you off. I have done that and it has saved me some money/crappy transfers in the past!

  15. Well. This works for me for flying IN to somewhere, but not so much for flying OUT. There is a tiny regional airport in my town, and that's what I use pretty much exclusively because the next best options are both over an hour drive away and almost always just result in a flight that is making the exact same connection at the exact same bigger airport that my regional route is already flying me to. So I just save myself the time and fly from my own town. The parking here is free and unlimited too, so that's a perk.

  16. LAX for me generally has cheaper flights and options. Even if a ticket were to be cheaper from John Wayne or SD airport the travel time and cost there would not make any sense
