A Japan Airlines Airbus A350-941 (JA13XJ) performing flight from Sapporo RJCC to Tokyo Haneda RJTT was touching down on runway 34R when the aircraft impacted a Japanese Coast Guard Dash-8 and burst into flames on the runway.

All people onboard evacuated.
5 of the 6 occupants of the Coast Guard aircraft received fatal injuries. The Captain survived but received serious injuries.

Any audio prior to the incident was recorded in such bad quality that it’s nearly impossible to extract clear communications from either side. JAL516 did receive a clearance to land from ATC, and so they did readback. The Coast Guard aircraft had been instructed to hold short of the runway at intersection C5.

Information to be updated as more official reports release.

  2. CCTV from airport shows the Coast Guard plane taxing onto runway 34R and then sitting there foe about 45 seconds until the A350 lands on top of him. Just like 1991 LAX. Unbelievable, looks like this went unnoticed by ATC so now we have another angle to this crash. It's never just one thing! Also the lighted stop bars to stop unauthorized entry to 34R have been Notamed Out of Service since December 27th.

  3. こちらの記録音声は本物ですか?貴方は羽田飛行場の屋外から通信傍受をされていたのですか?

  4. If this is the audio quality of the communications between pilots and air traffic controllers it's a miracle there aren't more accidents

  5. It's amazing that everyone made it out of the A350 alive. The Japanese passengers had intelligence, discipline, and teamwork. I think this would have a very different outcome if the plane was filled with American passengers.

  6. Literally any other country on earth and no way all those passengers get off, Japanese courtesy and strict obedience to the rules saved so many lives. Even an international flight landing would have been a worse outcome. Amazing work by the crew.

  8. A not fun fact: Haneda Airport also use alphabets as alternative names for the runways, and guess what? The 16L/34R involved in this accident is “Runway C”, not a good thing when a “Taxiway C” is parallel and connecting to it…

  9. I don't know if it is the quality of the recording… but I'd expect an ATC that handles this many international flights… to have better standards of English for clearer communication. A lot of this sounds like they are mumbling through words, which is not good when you have the lives of people in your hands.

  10. I wonder if the crew of the Coast Guard airplane crew were doing lots of back and forth flying hours for the earthquake relief and fatigue set in affecting their situation/environment awareness.

  11. I would've thought that the airport would've been closed immediately after the incident, but apparently ATC cleared a few flights to land on 34L.

  12. You all say that the Japanese are calm in that cabin,

In Japan, that in-flight situation is called 'panic'. In fact, passengers said after the ejection that there was panic on board.
